I think you need to revisit the editing capabilities of this synth, it's very powerful. Under that hood there is a 2 Oscillator VA mono synth, a drawbar organ emulator and a six oscillator digital subtractive synth with hundreds of PCM and additive waveforms. In Hex Layer mode, each oscillator has its own multi mode filter and multi stage amp envelope. Incidentally, you don't edit the sounds from Performance Mode, you use the Tone mode and those buttons labelled with Piano etc for immediate access to the generic sounds in Performance Mode. Throw in a very nice DSP section, drum machine, sequencer and arpeggiator and you've got one powerful piece of kit.

Been using one for the last 8 years. . . keeping just because of the solo synth and organ voices. . . PCM voices are average. The key bed is noisy but indestructible. . . will keep it as it doubles up as a MIDI controller with pitch bend & mod wheels!

If you mean the argeggiated tone, playing the video in 1080p fullscreen on my 32" monitor, I can see that it is P6-6 in the PCM Synth category: PolySynthPd1. But he is modifying the filter cutoff, attack time and release time from the preset as the arpeggio plays. I believe this preset is layering two detuned waves (samples), which is why it sounds so nice. According to my listening tests, most of the PCM synth tones layer two waves, often different ones and not always detuned. These tones are IMO surprising useful despite the fact that they are sampled and despite relatively few of them containing (sampled) filter sweeps. There is more to synth life than filter sweeps. (But I admit I love that sound as much as anyone. :D)

This is very cool! I know very little about synths or instruments in general. Would you recommend this as a first time synth or is there something cheaper and easier to use with the same sort of functionality?

If you want to learn about "proper" synthesis and making new and original sounds, then probably not. But if you want a single instrument that's versatile for playing music, creating sequences, etc, then it's a good choice and you can have a lot of fun with it. It's lightweight for moving around too if you want to play with other musicians, and it would be great for gigging for all sorts of music. I'm not aware of anything else quite like it.
@alenk7389 ай бұрын
The Roland GAIA (SH-01) would be good to learn synthesis on, given its profusion of knobs and sliders (almost one for every parameter). It's got a fully polyphonic synth engine with three oscillators and a resonant filter for each oscillator. It weirdly also has a small selection of PCM presets and even more strangely, a General MIDI 2 mode accessible only via MIDI. But it only has 37 keys, so that limits what you can do with it in a live situation. And Roland no longer makes it, having replaced it with the GAIA 2, which is more capable but also more expensive.

I had the XW-G1 and when it set on for some time it had "drift". keep it on with all the setting you like and come back in 2 hours.. did they change?-- mine did. get a korg krome EX, or the like. no problems.

Pro synths don’t have a selection of PCM tones? Please let Yamaha know and they will forthwith stop calling the Montage and MOD-X "synthesizers." :D In any case, thanks for the late review. Better late then never, right? I really mean it! Regarding the sounds, the XW-P1 is capable of much better tones than you hear from its presets. Some of them are available from the Casio Music Forums.

The Mod-X sand Montage's are just digital workstations. They are over priced pieces of garbage. I have a Casio WK-6600 which is capable of everything those are, and yet the Yamaha Mod-X is still 4500 dollars more
@alenk7389 ай бұрын
@@samgray49The WK-6600 can do everything the MOD-X and Montage can do? Ignoring the fact that the WK is an arranger and hence a very different kind of keyboard than the Montage and MOD-X, and not withstanding the fact that I am a big fan of Casio keyboards (I own two of them), can I have whatever it is you are smoking?

@creative-media isn’t wrong in concluding that it can be frustrating to get what you want out of it (within its obvious limitations, such as no resonant, sweepable filter in the default polyphonic modes). You do have to put some effort in, more than most people will bother with. But he’s also not wrong that it can be a lot of fun to try, if you’re into that sort of thing. Which I am, so I’m keeping mine too!

It does have synth editing capabilities and they are quite cool. You won't find oscilators because it is PCM synth. You can even mix some PCM based on simple oscilators waves. But it's a different techinque and I am not an expert to explain it better.

Thanks - today I've had an explore using the Midi Designer app. My synthesis skills are pretty haphazard, but I made another video of how it turned out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnfSe4Curah3p9E

Of course it has oscillators. Technically, PCM is just a type of data for an oscillator. But most people mean "single cycle waveform" when they say "oscillator." The XW-P1 has plenty of those too for selection and use in Hex Layer and Solo Synth tones.
@neilbradbury83038 ай бұрын
It actually does have oscillators. It isnt just a PCM synth (I think you mean ROMpler). One of the tone types is a 2 Osc mono synth with analogue waveforms (probably VA rather than true analogue). The Hex layer allows you to combine six waveform generators (you can call them Oscillators - Casio and many other synth manufacturers do). The waveform list is huge and while many of them are PCM waves, some are sampled from Rolands older analogue synths, but, a large section of the wave list are single cycle waveforms generated by additive synthesis (they are labelled Synth Waves in the wave list - they are not PCM samples).

I see what you mean. But I kept finding features that were almost brilliant but were let down by something. It is a great musical tool though. I think Casio's heyday was when they produced the CZ range of synths in the 80s.
