Great video! Your video validates my thoughts on how to handle cold weather operations! Next February 15 ish we will take delivery of our Spirit Deluxe, since we are 200 miles from Rice Texas we will conduct a shake down cruse I mean camping! Near by incase of issues. As a retired Pilot with lots of time in the cold country in the winter we had to take similar precautions to protect against the cold in both the lavatory and the galley. 😁🛫

Thanks for the video! I read some comments and it seems you can keep warm below freezing with no problem :)) This was a concern of mine since I noticed its not a 4 season trailer. I'm a RN and dental hygienist and looking at this trailer for FT living as I consider being a traveler. Do you think it would be a good trailer for single gal? Any problems towing with single axle? Never towed a trailer before but looking at toyota 4 runner? Just little nervous about towing! Never towed before LOL I will likely travel through TX, OR, WA, AZ, I think this trailer might work for the climate ok?
@CasitaRvLife Жыл бұрын
I know there are several single people living in their Casitas. It tows great. I have had no issues. For towing, Just take your time towing and watch your mirrors and trailer. Give more distance when changing lanes. As far as weather goes, The fresh water tank and black tank are located inside the camper. You do have to be careful with the grey tank because it is below the trailer. I put RV antifreeze in my grey tank when I am in very cold climates. I hope you have happy travels.

I haven’t used my new Casita yet and I live in Wisconsin. We plan to head south December 1. It’s going down into the teens this weekend. I did put about 1-2 cups of that antifreeze in the toilet (and flushed it), the shower, and both sinks. It’s parked outside. Do I need to add more antifreeze or is that enough? Sure hate to break it before I get to use it. Thanks!
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
That should be good for the drains. Are the water lines and fresh water tank empty? Are your running the heat? If you can plug the trailer in run your heat on about 40 degrees. It won’t use much energy but will prevent freezing. This is new to me also because we live in Florida. Anytime we have been in that cold we were camping.

@@CasitaRvLife I am not near an electrical source since I live in an apartment building. I lived in Florida until last May. I’m from PA but it’s been a while since I experienced this kind of cold. I contacted Casita and was told all lines were blown out after testing and to go with the antifreeze in toilet and shower. Hopefully that will be good enough. We are “warming up” to 30 tomorrow and 40 by Thursday. Next year I think we’ll leave November 1 instead of December 1! Thank you for the response

Thank you for the great winter camping tips. I do have a question concerning a statement that you made around the 2:49 min. mark. You said that if you are camping for multiple nights, you leave both the black & the gray valves open overnight (after you have dumped them). Does this offer a chance to contaminate the gray tank if you have to flush the toilet during the night and both valves are open? Or are you saying that you don't use the toilet during that time? Thanks again for the videos.
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
Yes this is how we operate. When we flush in the middle of the night it is a small amount of water. The way the drain is designed it should flow out. We also only use the trailer toilet for number one unless it is a emergency. We also flush the entire system at the end of every trip. I hope this helps.

@@CasitaRvLife so excuse my ignorance but if you have a toilet and only use it for number one, how and where do you do number two. Do you have one of those Walmart seats with a bag ?
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
The RV parks we stay in have showers and restroom facilities. And on the rare occasion if we’re Boondocking in the middle of nowhere we do have to use the trailer. We just try not to most of the time.

How does the dump station work ?
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
Most Campgrounds have a separate dump station. If you are at a campground that has only water and electric at your site when you use water it drains into the grey tank if it is from your shower and sinks. The water drains into your black tank from the toilet. When the tanks are full or you are leaving the campground you have to stop by the dump station and empty the black tank first then empty the grey tank. The dump station looks just like the sewer drains at the camp sites. Open the lid with gloves and attach your drain hose to the sewer drain and dump your tanks. A lot of the dump stations also have water to rinse everything off. We can usually last two days before we have to dump the tanks. Be conservative when using water when only using your tanks.
@jamesfriday57732 жыл бұрын
@@CasitaRvLife thank you. Great explanation. When you say you dump the tanks., do you mean you actually have to turn the tanks over. Or do you just open a valve to let it drain out ?
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
Dumping the tanks is the term used in the RV community for draining the tanks. We just hook up a discharge hose to the sewer drain and open valves to dump

Greg, when I add antifreeze to my black and gray tanks I open the drain valves slowly and check the clear elbow to make sure I see some antifreeze running through so I know the antifreeze is in the flush pipes and the valves. Do you do that as well?
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. I add the antifreeze right after I have dumped so I never checked. I probably will now.

Empty the black and gray tanks every day? They should both be at least half full to produce the velocity needed to flush out the debris. If they're not, add more water. If you're camping for hours in temps below 26 degrees, those tanks shouldn't be in use. I quit using the City Water Connection years ago. Far too likely a chance of burst and/or frozen water hoses. Plus, they all leak. The chance of your trailer flooding is greater when you leave your campsite with the water turned on at the spigot. Instead, I fill the fresh water tank and turn the water pump on when I'm there and off when I leave. As long as you're comfortable in the Casita, the water in the fresh water tank won't freeze.
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your input. We empty our tanks every day. Between the two of us using water the tanks are fairly full and flush out with no problems. We do perform regular maintenance on our water system which includes flushing all of the tanks and checking all of the piping in the trailer. We have camped in extreme cold weather numerous times and have never had any problems with the way we operate. The fresh water hose does have to be disconnected and drained when ever it is going to freeze. We only use the city water connection when it is above freezing. The antifreeze down the drains help keep the drain valves and hepvo valve from freezing. We understand that there are numerous philosophies on how to operate in RV's. Read any forum and you will see that. We use information from the manufactures and personal experience. We have traveled over 70,000 miles in our Casita and do change how we do things from time to time because we are always learning new things.

How hard is it to keep warm on the inside when it drops below freezing? Do you use a portable heater or the heat strips in the a/c unit?
@CasitaRvLife2 жыл бұрын
Easy to keep warm. We have heat strips in the a/c plus we have the gas furnace option. We use the heat strips if we are hooked up to shore power and the gas furnace if we are Boondocking. We also use the gas furnace when the temps are below 20 degrees.
