Skimmed the DVD and saw the deleted scene where Dr. Harvey "sings" along with the uncles-- would have definitely helped my little-kid mind better understand what his job was back in the day! Also fun fact: the interior of the manor was also used in a Backstreet Boys music video!

Casper is one of those films that shockingly holds up well as an adult. Watched it endlessly as a kid and just assumed through the passage of time that it would lose its appeal though a more cynical and adult eye. Far from it. If anything I like it more now as an adult than I did as a kid. For one, the VFX still look good. The faithful cartoon likeness of the ghosts are just endlessly charming. The autumnal atmosphere is incredible, the set design is top notch, and the musical score is brilliant. The film works on so many levels. It feels like one of the last big budgeted blockbuster family films that wasn't afraid to be a little gross, be a little rude, and be a little dangerous. It's a family spooky move that isn't afraid to be spooky after making you laugh. The film has a more nuanced script than given credit for. The father/daughter dynamic feels real and textured and doesn't relay on making either Kat or her dad too oblivious or moody. They love each other and are processes the death of their wife and mother differently and just can't quite see eye to eye on the matter. They aren't at each other throats or combative. It's nice to see a film like this with a nuanced and dimensional parent/child relationship. The emotionality of the film also hits hard. Like, here I am as an elder millennial deadass crying at a Casper movie. TWICE! It's such a sweet, beautiful story on loss and grief and moving on. Love this film.

Casper was a really charming film and ahead of its time from an effects perspective. One correction. You imply that the DTV films didn't do enough business for Universal to maintain interest in the property but of those, only Casper's Haunted Christmas was made by Universal. Spirited Beginning and Casper Meets Wendy were produced by Saban and 20th Century Fox under a separate deal with Harvey.

I watched "Casper" at the theaters back then in summer of 1995. This movie was HUGE and everywhere. And it was my very first 5.1 surround sound theatrical experience too. I was blown away by how much the Multichannel that had an impact on the whole visual experience. The CGI effects aged pretty well, given the comic-style and the transparency effects are pretty darn impressive even nearly 30 years later. I even had an audio-dramatization cassette of that movie which i listened to a lot of timed. And man.... i had an insane crush on Christina Ricci and i actually liked the "schmaltzy" dance scene with Casper as real boy :P Man i was jealous on him to dance cheek to cheek with Cat. And yes, that mansion was AWESOME. I loved that whole set design. And if you like the movie you may also like the set design of the 1999 Jan De Bond movie "The Haunting". I always felt the Set designs for both Mansions (the Interrior) had something in common and both gave each movie a lot of Dimension and sense of Scale. Casper also must have probably been the first movie featuring Eric Idle i ever saw in theaters. The early-mid 90s were the time where i discovered all the Monty Python stuff because my dad love the movies.

21:20 Apparently the show was said to he inspired by Riverdale as an ultra gritty reimagining of a beloved cartoon. I remember reading one article claiming Casper will have friends "with benefits." (🤢) As Casper’s in highschool while someone moves to the town of Eternal Falls and investigate it’s dark secret, (again very Riverdale) and would've dealt with themes of the meaning of life. (I'm assuming Casper dies while investigating but comes back through the will of love for his friend he desires.) But after 2 years, maybe Universal (hopefully) scrapped it for how stupid that sounds. Casper being a dead antsy teen with CW romance and murder mystery feels less like you're making a CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST adaptation and more like a rip-off of The In-Between (2022). Also anything with "Riverdale" influence is a red flag. Lol.

I still own my original Casper film on VHS. I watched it often as a kid and I still watch it from time to time till this day. Honestly this film ages like fine wine. It’s simple yet sweet, it’s funny yet heartfelt, it’s sad but yet also lifts your spirits… The story of a lonely ghost who didn’t have any friends and couldn’t remember anything about his life when he was alive really makes the audience take a minute to think about their lives and be thankful for all the memories they have. They just don’t make movies like this anymore. Movies back then had more soul and meaning. Modern movies just don’t replicate this exact same feeling anymore. I am thankful I grew up in a golden era and these films are just golden. Did Casper needed a sequel? No, I don’t think so. I think the way the film ended was just perfect. You can pretty much make your own conclusion of what happens afterwards. Some films don’t need sequels and Casper is one of those films. I also want to point out every actor had amazing chemistry which made the film more convincing.

You know, there is a very subtle plot thread connecting all three deaths in the movie: Dr. Harvey, Carrigan and Casper, were all killed by an obsession. Dr. Harvey obsessed with the death of his wife ends up losing his life accidentally. Carrigan, obsessed with the treasure of Whipstaff Manor, falls off a cliff. And little Casper couldn't stop playing with the sled his dad had given him, a sled Casper had begged for months to have, until he caught pneumonia and died. I think that little bit of underlying story really gave this movie some juice and I will always love this move!
@arthurcorassiniАй бұрын
The Ray Stantz cameo should be cannon...my theory is that the Ghostbusters were just too good, they fell out of ghosts shortly after the events of Ghostbusters 2, or Ghostbusters the Video Game (it is cannon)...Winston was the first to go since there wasn't any money there and he needed to pay the bills, then Venkman and Egon got into a fight over the future of the Ghostbusters and Egon's being obsessed with the end of the world...Peter left to become a teacher and never spoke to Egon again, juat like Murray and Ramis, even if they made peace before Harold's death....during this constant fight and with the company on it's last legs, Venkman being not interested and Spengler being obsessed, Ray was the only one still doing the jobs...and when he encountered The Ghostly Trio, fed up, and knowing he could not win, he gave up, and that's how the Ghostbusters ended their society. I mean, it adds up to Afterlife events and it makes sense when you consider the dates, but that's just me

My dad's family had 20+ rooms in their home but during winter they shared the biggest room downstairs along with a chimney and a pot with hot boiling water. The servants had to share a single room too. In which they had a chimney and a cradle with hot water. Maybe that's what the writers and director wanted to convey? 🎬

Once was where the trio puts james on a bench and lifts it into the air as kat askes for the party. This led to the line "he hit the roof" which the meaning is lost in the finished movie. The other was carrigan and eric idle trying to kill each other, it got sorta violent and explains why he is wearing a knight suit in the finished movie. Wish they gave us more information- a clear date of when Casper lived/died, a clear date of when Casper's dad lived/died, a clear date of when Casper's mom lived/died, a clear date of when Casper's three uncles lived/died, how they all died, what his three uncles and mom looked like, and especially an explanation as to why Casper's dad wasn't haunting the mansion too (he knew his son had stayed behind and instead of staying behind with him at least until they both moved on he moved on by himself leaving Casper behind all alone which is cruel in of itself but even more so when you take into account that Caspar stayed behind for him) also it would've been really cool if they had talked about the possible connection between Casper's family and Carrigan (she inherited the mansion from her dad so it's at least possible they're related in some way). The movie barley if at all touches on any of the history and the original is even worse when it comes to that- as a history nerd would've been really cool to see some of that 😂❤️

Really hope that scene with Zelda Rubinstein surfaces someday. Surprised they were able to get Ackroyd for that cameo though, too bad none of the other guys tagged along. Would love to see an extended scene where the ghostly trio make a mockery of all 4 Ghostbusters in comic fashion, with Murray quipping one liner excuses.

I usually heart about other casting choices and they're so wrong but I honestly think Robin or Kurt would have also knocked this out of the park, but Pullman did such a great job. I appreciate the use of gussied up, you don't hear that anymore lol.

Deleted scenes: I had the comic back then. And there was a scene involving the Dad inside a room with all furniture flying around. Also: look up the Whipstaff manor playset. ☺️☺️

Some clips of that are on the bonus documentary (and maybe the deleted scenes if I recall correctly). Kind of wish they kept it in!

9:12 In deed, in the cartoon Egon states the first rule of Ghostbusting is never do it alone. Although I personally always thought that that's not even meant to be Ray, but an in-universe version of Dan Aykroyd himself who thought he was being invited to a fan event.

I was so mad about the Ghostbusters cameo when I was a kid. I was still a rabid fan at the time and wanted to see Ray Stantz do some busting.

I had the biggest crush on Christina Ricci in 2nd grade because of this movie. I so wanted to be Casper.

I love watching videos like this. Learning about some of my favorite movies growing up years later is a treat. Where do yiu find info like this?
@MediaPastimesАй бұрын
Behind the scenes featurettes, interviews, magazine articles published around the time that the movie was made. This video had countless sources attached to it, but I had a lot of fun making it because this was my absolute favorite movie when I was a kid (and I still love it now).

I remember the Casper toys given out at Pizza Hut. I think my cousins might have had a couple of those. I had one of those candelabras.

Did you see the deleted scene where the Ghostly Trio sing "Lucky Enough To Be A Ghost"? I love that song and I wish it could've been in the movie!

The mansion is the movie's real mvp

I remember 2 Casper sequels coming out. They were direct to video.
@MediaPastimesАй бұрын
Prequels. They were pretty bad and not produced by Universal.

@MediaPastimes I was a tween at the time so I didn't realize they were meant to be prequels. I just remember them coming out direct to video and I think they were played on tv once or twice. I never thought about it that much.

It’s too bad Christina Ricci didn’t like making this it’s one of her best roles!

From what I understand, she had a good time making it but looks back on it as a movie she didn't put much effort into. I guess she tried to watch it with her kids and cringed at her performance.

Carrigan and Dibs are the only real downside to this movie. I feel like after Home Alone, all kids films had to have these adult burglar/thief type villains. I would've much preferred that all the drama was centered around Kat and Casper.
@MediaPastimesАй бұрын
I agree with the Home Alone influence, but I absolutely loved those characters.
