fun fact: this isn't actually the caspian sea monster. it's a lun class ekranoplan, which was made after the sea monster (internally referred to as the KM) and it is actually somewhat smaller. the KM was about 20 meters (65 feet) longer and had wings that had about 100m^2 (1000 ft^2) more surface area.

Well, it's not that crazy if the vehicle is designed solely for this type of flight. It doesn't really have an option of "crashing" in any way, it only turns into a ship. Sinking would be a different issue all together that isn't relevant to your point. Taking off and landing an aircraft is vastly different than piloting these things. The USA also had prototypes like this that worked very well and was very easy to pilot. It's just that they really aren't very necessary or need by the time they came into existence. They was doomed from the start. There are rumors that the USA has a few modern versions of these type of crafts in the Pacific to this day in the nuclear defense program.

I legit thought this thing was a 3D model for the first 4 minutes of the video, and that he had used a green screen to bring that thing into the video for the intro. It's in fantastic condition, and the quality shot + camera used make this video look so surreal. I guess the foreign nature of the subject matter in this video also played a role in creating such a trippy sensation while watching the video.

The Caspian Sea Monster could actually fly (Never tried though), it just throttled back on it's engine power so it wouldn't take off. it did this because as it came out of the water, it's drag decreased and so no longer needed all its power to stay in ground effect (this is how it hovers).
@jonathanfairchild
@jonathanfairchild Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it could actually fly. That wingspan isn’t nearly enough to support it for flight. The wings look optimized for high drag low altitude not actual flight. It could likely make enough thrust to leap into the air but then it would just fall/stall back down to the ground.
@waled121
@waled121 Жыл бұрын
No. Wrong. It can’t fly.
@IloveJellow
@IloveJellow 11 ай бұрын
I mean it could for maybe 1 second till it flopped straight into the ground... That was one of the major issues for that hover craft.. was any major updraft of wind would cause the plane to lose its cushion and basically take off which isn't what it was designed for. Basically if the water or weather wasn't stable the pilots could not adjust the craft fast enough to counter the effects.. So for a craft to require such high requirements from the crew and also near perfect conditions outside for them to pilot it safely just wasn't valuable. Now makes you wonder if they had any form of AI assistance would have maybe helped the craft out more, but even then the variables where just too much for it to be a reliable war machine.
@jojomaster7675
@jojomaster7675 10 ай бұрын

The interior is in amazingly good condition, well worth preserving! As to invisibility, I am pretty sure that sea search radar would find it (and its wake) just as easily as it would any ship and look down radar on a fighter should be able to see it as well... perhaps not 1980s designs but designs today certainly.
@ArkaMondal-xi2oj
@ArkaMondal-xi2oj Жыл бұрын
Well radars do need line of sight as radio waves don't bend along with the curvature of the Earth. To detect vessels at sea beyond line of sight you usually use sonar (active or passive) as water is a really good medium for sound. Since the Ekranoplan flies over water, sonar cannot detect it. Flying as low as the Ekranoplan would render radar useless as the ocean is simply vast and I don't think any navy in the world has the capability of monitoring the entire ocean with radars placed every few hundred kilometers. Fighter jets face the same issues, the ocean is vast, and its very hard to find a vessel in international waters due to the sheer vastness of the ocean.
@davedixon2068
@davedixon2068 Жыл бұрын
@@ArkaMondal-xi2oj Thats why the US navy has AEW aircraft with look down radar so yes latest model radar will see this coming but it would depend on the range of the missiles whether it was seen soon enough, I suspect that there were problems with weather, as turbulence would be very bad for the ground effect it is supposed to "fly" in.

There is a company that makes these albeit in a smaller scale (WIG vehicles) , the one that was made is the Airfish 8 and is expected to be ready for commercial uses in 2025 , there is also a company that plans to make a WIG vehicle but fully electric (since WIG vehicles uses less fuel than conventional aircraft ). Besides , there is the "Liberty lifter" project in which the US military want to make a WIG vehicle for troop and supplies transport that can carry over 100 tons of cargo. So albeit not as widespread as normal planes , these vehicles are slowly making a comeback

Fun Fact - Ekranoplanes/Screenplanes - are still used as a concept. For example - there are many European-made and Russian-made Ekranoplanes for Civilian/Private duty. And they can work kinda like - Autogyro, Air-cushion ships, and Seaplanes - but also can work on their main reason of build - work under ground effect. So, yea, this concept of planes - still exist, but in small percentage... but still enough - to live, in terms of products on Avia-markets.

Finally, someone that doesn’t call it a plane. Best way to describe is “ground effect vehicle”… in a way it’s more similar to a hovercraft than a normal plane or ship.

Despite what that last guy said about the later prototypes being able to 'bulldoze the waves' - the sheer power of waves and water goes up exponentially with size. So I just don't believe it'd be viable long-term because of the inevitability of it hitting worse weather than they were expecting, as even if it could take a lot of punishment, sooner or later it'd hit waves and weather conditions that damaged the fuselage too much. That's my guess.

Title: Caspian Sea Monster. Not a Plane, not a ship Me: a Car

Perhaps we should revisit these technological marvels, not for military purposes but as commercial/pleasure craft. If an all electric engine could be developed to run it it could potentially change some aspects of the commercial world. There's something about it's efficiency that lends itself to a more carbon-free engine design, plus the reduced risk than a plane sporting such technology would incur. Interesting...

Wouldn't work for the same reason why electric semi truck isn't widely used. It has to do with weight to carry ratio, ev have to carry on board battery which cut the amount of spare weight it can carry, also for electric vehicle to have the same amount of distance to an ice, they have to carry more battery which mean more mass which mean more battery and so on and so forth.

From the first time I seen one I've been fascinated. These where unlike anything any country at the time had and if they had built a fleet of them and worked out all the bugs they could have launched an attack on the USA . From what I've heard the technology used helped bring about the hovercraft. Also they where abandoned because Russia had turned its attention to intercontinental missiles making the Caspian sea monster useless. Your video is the first time I've seen inside one . Great video .

The chief designer Rostolav Alexeyev was demoted to being a mechanic I think because of the politics of the time ,then came the crash of the Soviet Union so no more money for investments ,sadly he died a couple of years later in 1980 . He seems to have been on the point of overcoming the problems it had before the demotion ,so it could be an opportunity for at least a fast form of travel in both the Caspian or Black sea in regulated routes.
