In the 1960s, the leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev bragged that his nation had ships that could jump right over bridges. His cryptic words confused Western leaders, but he was alluding to a secret project deep within the Soviet Union.
The Soviets were developing a new class of vehicle that could move as fast as an aircraft, but lift far more payload than a conventional airplane. These machines would fly metres from the surface using an aerodynamic principle called the ground effect. They were called Ekranoplan (roughly translating to mean for “screen plane” or “low flying plane”). Beginning with experiments in the early 1960s, and headed by a pioneering hydrofoil engineer Rostislav Alexeyev, the Soviets quickly developed a series of small-scale prototypes to refine the concept. In 1966 they completed the KM (Korabl Maket) Russian for “ship-prototype”. An enormous machine, larger and heavier than any aircraft in the world. The first large scale Ekranoplan could lift an astonishing 544,000 kg (1,199,315 lb) and reach speeds of over 600 km/h (373 mph).
The KM proved that the ground effect concept could be scaled up, but it also revealed series unresolved engineering issues as well as limits to Ekranoplan operational capabilities. Despite these setbacks, Alexeyev and his engineers continued their development efforts. However, by the time the KM was completed and ready for testing, the political climate in the Soviet Union had changed entirely. Khrushchev, an enthusiastic supporter of Ekranoplans, was replaced with Leonid Brezhnev. Brezhnev, adverse to risk and uninterested in bold projects to showcase Soviet superiority, was far less interested in Ekranoplan development.
Alexeyev and his engineers abandoned the KM’s development and moved on to develop more practical applications, including a smaller troop transport (A-90 Orlyonok) and later, a larger anti-surface warfare ship (MD-160 Lun-class). After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the few Ekranoplans that entered service were quickly retired from Russian Navy fleets.

I have never been there so i'm not 100% sure, but it should be possible to see it's tail from the beach opened to public. If yes it would be worth travelling literally thousands of miles for me, just for one sight. Also there is the A-90 stays in a museum in Moscow risking getting several damage because of bad positioning, plus the biggest of the modern ones flying somewhere near Petrazowodsk ,,Orion-20"

Example of else one relict of cold war: propaganda about soviet economic failures (at that time when in USA were homeless and introduced food stamps, example of fail state). Especially about exactly that times which was golden era in USSR: country mainly restored after WW2, industry was huge and could anything, economy worked perfectly like a clock, arm race de facto stopped (finally in yearly 70s) and in country released incredible amount of resources (both natural and industrial).

Alexeev started own career as military engineer. He got diploma several month after European nazis attacked USSR, he immediately proposed to create military hydrofoils, prototype was ready in 1943 and finished in 1945. After war he proposed new projects of military hydrofoil with torpedoes (done in 1948, for it he even got state award). And only in 1954 he suddenly decide to build hydrofoils for civilian needs. 1918. Soviets: “All people are brothers, let’s cancel state borders, countries, let’s dissolve army, workers of the world, unite!” 14 countries: “Invade and kill Russians! Divide Russia on new colonies”.

I feel like if the machinery was updated, semi-permanent lanes could be made from Europe to the tip of Africa, from Hawaii to China, Alaska to San Fran. Like anywhere there’s an ocean separating two points that could be met with a relatively straight line, you could have one of these running a weekly route. I know nothing of the shipping industry but it seems like having a few of these in the cargo fleet as well as all our usual shipping container ships would be super beneficial, I have no idea how, I just think it’d be cool.

I agree. There needs to be faster ship travel that is commercialized. We have been dealing same slow cruises for decades. If we can get planes to fly in the air at high speeds I’m sure we can come up with faster water travel.

Sure pilots can fly above turbulence at times but planes have to make adjustments at times also and I’m sure ships can do the same with complex radar systems and be able to to avoid rough seas. We should have the option of being able to travel fast by ships just like we do with planes and trains. There has been no advancement in commercial ship travel for decades now except for military nuclear powered ships.

Imagine a slower (about 200 km/h) "ekronoplan", optimized for fuel efficiency and range. It could compete with cruise ships. 4 square meter cabins for a couple, would not be as comfortable as those in a cruise ship, but being able to cross the atlantic in fewer than 2 days, would certainly be tempting for people who dislike the cramped seats of an airplane.

Scrat335 Ground effect exists only at an altitude equal to the wingspan of an aircraft, and is only pronounced within one-half the wingspan. To fly at 500 feet this Ekronoplan would have had to have a wingspan 4 times that of a 747.

There might be a niche between the efficiency of boats and the speed of aircraft that a ground effect cargo vehicle could take up. They are no more limited in operation than boats are.

@@hedgehog3180 to be fair though, if it does get detected by surface radar (ultimately ekranoplan would still be detected by surface radar, that's better than aircraft... but worse than the range ships can be detected by radar), then things are going to be very dicey for it... it's fast... for a ship or even hydrofoil vessels, but still not faster than aircraft to escape against one (or against anti aircraft weaponry) so unlike aircraft it can't simply enter and escape anti aircraft weapon bubble. and it's payload is large against aircraft... but a missile boat smaller than half it's size can carry 2/3 it's missile complement so in terms of maximum missile saturation salvo, missile boats are still better bang for buck. a missile boat doesn't exactly stand that much of a chance if engaged by aircraft or warship, but they DO have some chance owing to their small size and agility .. some even have CIWS mounted on them so while their chance is not great if they are detected, they do have a chance to survive. ekranoplan have none of that, given it's size and inability to maneuver.

USSR was the only one who really need that type of weaponry - countries like China or India doesnt have mediterranean seas where that type of weaponry could be effectively used and countries that does dont need it cause they already in alliance with USA which is main aircraft carrier operator. Other uses of Ekranoplan are as sea/ice rescue vehicle, Extreme North or inland navigation transport vehicle and as a fire fighter. Sure, as regular sea transport its inefficient.

We travel a lot on the sea here in Greece. And hydrofoil ships, (we call them Dolphins), are popular here. It would be the coolest thing to see and travel with an Ekranoplan! Fast cats are cheaper to build, much cheaper to operate, give a smoother ride to passengers and the big ones can operate at up to 100 kmh. They haven't flinched in the past when it comes to sacrificing and risking lives due to one or two faults on planes. But seriously, if it was treated with care it could be great, if they actually took the time to work out every fault and every potential circumstance. Plus it would need both naval and aviation engineers working together, rather than just aviation

@@ascissordollynamedgwen9409 As was pointed out in the video, the larger the ekranoplan is, the higher it can go above water level and still make use of the ground effect. So if you made one big enough, it'd have little to fear from waves even in the Atlantic.

How so? Keep in mind that the main reason the Soviet Union never went beyond a few prototypes with their ekranoplans is that building a ground effect craft that works outside of the Black Sea is pretty much impossible. Perhaps, hadn't the money dried up in the 1980s, the Soviets could've developed the Orlyonok- and Lun-class ekranoplans to serve into some tactical niche better than any seaplane or boat. But the concept would have never worked in the world of shipping, where a design that moves 10,000 tonnes in weeks across oceans is immeasurably more useful that one that moves 100 tonnes across shallow seas in hours.

The earlier version undergoes incremental improvements that eventually results in something that's revolutionary and completely different to the first iteration. Think Ford Model T to today's EV... Or the very first computers that took up an entire room to today's handhelds on which I'm typing this. Who's to say that had such a similar iterative process taken place, there wouldn't have been similar leaps and advancements

@@archipiratta I get what you're saying. But for every revolutionary idea there are a thousand concepts that are just duds with very little potential for growth. And as much as I love WIGs and ekranoplans, there are too many hurdles that simply can't be overcome. Or perhaps I'm wrong, and with enough work the ekranoplan would turn out to be a revolution in maritime transport. Alas, I don't think we'll ever find out.

@@pixelghostclyde8717 if they only care about carrying capacity cargo airplanes wouldn't exist. speed is also a big factor. If they mange to solve the technical problems and make it intercontinental it will be a game changer for military and civilian transportation.
