My grandma was an Italian immigrate from a very poor family of peasants. And so when she and my grandpa made money in France they bought lots of expensive things, awful baroque furnitures, ugly marble floor, an horrifying collection of French porcelain dolls. It was sad really, because they had this admiration for rich people, and they just wanted to buy things they associated with their idea if wealth. And my grandma's cabinet was packed with Chanel and Dior skincare and makeup, she wouldn't buy anything else, I think she was ashamed of her humble background and it was very important for her to look the part of someone wealthy (she had great skin though, a huge fan of sunscreen)

Thank you so much for sharing the story. I relate so hard! My grandparents were dirt poor and lost everything - they sailed across the Atlantic on a boat and were robbed AGAIN of the few pieces of clothing they had left. They grew up SO frugal that my dad never had new items and still to this day he hoards EVERYTHTING and won’t even turn on the heater or ac- then there’s me, Who grew up seeing that and ended up a bit like your grandma. Wanting to impress everyone because I didn’t feel good enough about myself and was ashamed at school to wear thrift store clothing (we lived in a good upper middle class neighborhood but with the mentality of my parents it was hard as I compared myself to everyone else) Thankfully I grew up and found some self-esteem and came to my wits about what actually matters. And how far that money can go if it’s put in the right places, to make us happy and improve the world around us instead of just buying things that we don’t like to impress people we don’t care about. It’s not the same for everyone, and some people genuinely enjoy these things. More power to them! But the amount of people, including myself that have purchased things just to make ourselves feel better superficially to other people that really don’t care is outstanding in a not so good way. I’m really hoping that these sorts of conversations can help change that for other people so that we can focus on what actually makes us happy!!

@@CassandraBankson And thank you for sharing your experience as well, it's not something people often talk about, and I am so grateful that you were willing to make yourself vulnerable and share this with us (it means a lot, to know that someone as extraordinary, glamorous and successful as you could have a similar family history, I am moved to tears.) You are right, coming from a humble background is really something that sticks with you (in fact studies have shown that even if a family does manage to escape poverty, it takes at least two generations to get rid of the label). Very often I felt uneasy and ashamed because my family tried very hard to navigate into higher social circles, always afraid to appear unworthy, uneducated, ridiculous. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to the problem, because industries shouldn't be able to prey on people's insecurities and suffering to make money. And make them feel ashamed and inadequate because they don't have buy this or that. I am proud to say that channels such as yours made me an informed, educated consumer and skintellectual, and I am now very careful about such things, I won't let them ruin my self-worth or mental when it's supposed to be about self care. I cannot thank you enough for sharing the sentiment of luxury brands tapping in the market of people's insecurities with status and wealth, this is mainly one of the reasons I find to be the motif behind each of these well known names to branch out of the fashion aspect, the fashion aspect is more like eyecandy to us and the other branches or brands they might own are just another way to market our fears amd be their product at the end of the day.

Cassandra, I'm always hearing you bash La Mer but there's another brand here in the EU that beat easily those La Mer prices (could be worth it tho, don't know much about caviar in skincare 😂)! The brand is La Prairie (its a Swiss brand) and I'd love to hear what's your opinion on it ✨

I used to work in a laboratory at a factory that manufactured and bottled some La Prairie products, and one of the perks of the job was that we could take home leftovers samples. I fell in love with their Marine Cleanser (or whatever it was called 15+ years ago). It was slightly drying, but my then-super oily skin loved it, and I knew that never in a million years would I ever be able to afford it outright, so I hoarded as much of it as I could. It made my skin so soft and clear. It was the first fancy brand I ever used (I've used other mid-range brands, but nothing that expensive), but I'm curious how an educated/knowledgeable mind would view their products.

I have an old LV bag (from a now-deceased family member). I was using it and my boyfriend’s (materialistic) friend interrupted me to ask if my bag was real. It had nothing to do with the conversation (which was about the recording he and my boyfriend were about to do) and I admit I was offended. I don’t care if bags are fake or if they’re not designer (Some of my favorite bags were, like, $15), but the implication that he even needed to know how much my purse might’ve costed to properly judge my character was offensive to me. (At least, that’s how it came across to me).
@elizabethfetner14732 жыл бұрын
I don’t really care either, but I do have quite a few authentic leather Kate Spade bags I am very proud to say I did not pay full retail price for! And, even though I’m very much pro capitalism and I don’t think it’s wrong for a company to make a profit, It is so wrong for a company to mislead consumers the thing in there buying something fancy when it’s not.

@@elizabethfetner1473 Yes! We love a sale here! I really love some of the unique, colorful Kate Spade purses. One of my favorites is a recent-ish Kate Spade coin purse (bee) that I attach a strap to! I also use the larger purse version (but with a different strap). I totally agree it’s fine for companies to profit, but I just felt it’s a little rude to use the cost amount of a luxury item (he also asked if I bought it myself) to judge someone. (LV doesn’t do sales because of luxury marketing).

For real! I am nearing 40 and STILL get acne like a teenager. I started YT last year to show people that acne is a real struggle not just for teens. I'm sorry, but.. what's the big issue about this here? The skincare community is just a community that focuses on caring for your skin; clear skin or not you still have to take care of it anyway and people who usually HAVE clear skin can be better ambassador’s than those who do not because it usually means that the products they've used before to clear up their skin have worked. And even if they didn’t have any acne before, the products they're using to maintain their skin, are in theory, working are they not? I just think that this is a petty argument that no one really cares for.
@chelsea80822 жыл бұрын
@@alexandria1672 I agree! I think people just always want to find an issue with everything and complain. I don’t see what the issue is. Naturally, if you see someone with clear skin you’re going to want to ask them what their skincare routine is or what specific products they use. It’s hard using someone with acne as the face of a skincare brand because how do you know the products are working for them? I definitely agree with everything you said!

All the after-shave I have is from when I bought fragrances. So for men, it's extremely normal to have fancier shaving products if you wear cologne. I get the point that's being made, but when you look at the cost compared to buying the cologne alone it's not outrageous. I also don't think $100 for cologne is bad if it lasts at least 8 hours. Most $20-50 ones I have tried have a weak throw and last 2-4 hours. The Dior serum I would never pay for though lol

Dear Cassandra, “Sauvage” in French means wild. And Eau Sauvage is the most mythical cologne for men created by the Dior house in 1966. Please, don’t discredit the smart things you say by making stupid comments like “it sounds like sewage”! You are a smart woman, but you have to educate yourself a bit about French fashion and beauty houses, and realize that beauty has a tradition in France that dates to well before the USA even existed. French dermatologists are way ahead of the American ones in terms of research and treatment (Tretinoic acid was prescribed to my mother in France in the 1970s and she was told to avoid the sun by her French dermatologist in 1965!). I am not at all in favor of buying “designer” beauty products if they are not worth it, and actually never have, but comments about a name or the fact that Dior is a luxury fashion house, or that “Chanel was a nazi - which she wasn’t, she just had an affair with one - have nothing to do with the quality, or lack of, of their beauty products. Stick to the ingredients and formulas, that is the most serious and professional approach! P.S. If you want more info on French beauty, fads, the origin of some beauty treatments and/or products, I can help. My mom lived with severe acne until 35 and I still live with it. We were lucky to have a great derm but science findings progress and things are not simple. If you are interested in my story or want some info, pm me. And she’s of a generation with little “general culture” as it is called in France, which is very common in the US. Also has a bit of a chip on her shoulder about money. And cares too much about so-called “influencers”. She’s great at debunking beauty fads and fakes, but as she goes forward she should look beyond that world and just do what she does well, that is look at ingredients and science. And not only in the US.

Dear Cassandra and Natascha I agree , I am an Italian/Sub-Saharan 63 year old female and in my olfactory opinion , the world splits in 2 thus : MEN WHO WEAR (ORIGINAL) EAU SAUVAGE …..AND THOSE WHO DON’T EAU SAUVAGE is THE NUMBER ONE fragrance for men and every other fragrance comes 12th or 13th 😎 Just saying , use it or don’t 😂😂😂😂 I agree fully with regard to using the “side products” soaps, shampoo, foot lotion et .al. Soon we’ll be bombarded with Narciso R smelling pencils and Gucci Envy air refreshers for cars , Mickey dousing Minnie with Carolina Herero and so forth. I love your videos and the comments that your Butterflies 🦋 post. Such fun 🤩

It is one thing for you yourself to feel insecure and feel the need to deck in brands. It is another for other people to judge you for it because like it or not there ARE many people who will look at people differently depending on the brands and type of clothings a persom wears. They will look down on you for dressing in jeans and tshirts even if they are clean and well kept but as soon as you whip out a fur vest or muffler they look at you positively. I experienced this and as much as I hate to say this I get why some people will choose to buy from expensive brands even when they cannot pay for it. Sometimes you're not the problem, the world is seriously.

I’ve never liked Dior skincare. I feel they sell the brand and the fragrance. It’s the same with the makeup, with only some exceptions: I got a try-size cream to powder foundation, and Oh-My-Gawd… it made my skin like porcelain, and it didn’t break me out. I bought the big size one. Pity is no longer available.

Another elephant fact that tickles me: elephants think humans are cute! Like, cute in the same way we think puppies and otters and such are cute. That’s how they see us!

Skincare for fun vs skincare for health... I'm active in my eating disorder right now. I hate living in my body, the way it looks and feels, finding clothes for it, moving in it. I used to love working out and yoga and being in touch with my body, and the experience of living in my body was just so easy. I hate moving now and I make food choices as an act of self-harm. So... What's the one thing I can do to take care of my body that doesn't remind me of something I hate about myself, at a time when taking a multivitamin is a reminder that I don't get adequate micronutrients from food anymore? Skincare. I can do that. And I can have fun formulating lotions and creams and toners and masks from scratch using ingredients from cosmetic ingredients suppliers - everything I put on my face (except sunscreen and chemical peels, which I don't have any business messing with). It's something to study and something to fill my time. My PIH fades weeks earlier as I learn how to work with new actives, and my blackheads are 3/4 gone thanks to anhydrous self-emulsifying cleansing balms. I'm dewy, never greasy. I love relaxing with a jelly mask scented with hydrosols in a bubble bath, a can of sparkling water, and a good episode of Ask a Mortician. Baths and showers are, weirdly enough, a time when I don't hate the sight of my own body. I enjoy making bubble bath from scratch too, something new to me. I guess the only "safe" part of my body is my skin.

Just looked it up, "Sauvage" has a lot of meanings in French depending on the context, but it's mostly along the lines of "wild" or "untamed" Also: I don't know if you noticed 'cause you were freaking out about La Mer at the time, but he put his moisturizer on his eyes too!

Perfumed niacinamide serum....i think L'Oreal made something similar with half the price, and even bundle some peptides too. Olay made perfumed serum too....but that not bougie. Edit: in my country exist seaweed cream that cost $4 for 1.oz...it has petroleum too. Maybe i should grab one to see if it actually do something....or fun & giggles.

Right on! The best fitting shirts I've ever worn are the super cheap t-shirts and crop tops from Target. I bought a few just as hang-around-the-house shirts and to use as throwaways on a camping trip, and I fell in love. Under $10, comfortable, and so flattering for my figure. Sure, some clothing is worth the extra price if it's expertly made or is a fancy fabric, but basic items -- psssh, I'm sticking with Target. Maybe not the most ethical clothing, but not everyone can afford to buy sustainable, "eco-friendly," expensive clothes all the time.

So, this is an ad. And I don't mean Cassandra's video - Noah's video is an ad. 100%. He was paid to say he uses these and very likely doesn't actually, or does because he receives them for free. He was also likely paid in some way to get around it being a directly sponsored ad. Or maybe not and he was just shoved some cash. But, yeah, this is not a genuine video. This is an ad.

As an obvious man I can agree with him and say I like shaving gel’s better because I do feel better on the skin and shaving cream just feel not as smooth and calming. Also it is recommended to shave with the grain but I also shave against it cuz it does give a smoother shave. I will say it’s more prone to razor bumps and irritation tho, but that’s what skincare is for.

The Sauvage line from Dior is a fragrance so maybe he is using it like women match their body wash and lotions to their fragrance. I agree though that you have to turn and learn those ingredients!! I stopped spending the Uber amount of money for highly fragranced but ineffective lotions for my dry skin and just got an unscented body lotion with effective ingredients so it wouldn’t compete with my fragrances after watching your videos! I appreciate your knowledge so much!! Edit-Keep preaching about Le Mer!!!!! I have dry skin and I fell for the marketing ONCE! I have had better results from using a body lotion on my face when the airlines LOST my skincare bag! Le Mer is overpriced and underwhelming and I never bought anything from them again! I am 58 and it breaks my heart that all of the teens who watch these influencers are being sold the luxury market without knowing what works for their skin type and wallet both! There are so many affordable brands with amazing ingredients! I do use Tatcha but they have great skincare and I am again 58, so I can afford to treat myself. I taught my 19 year old son good skin care and he uses the Ordinary brand so he can afford it.

Genuine question: Why do you constantly give the argument of Chanel and Dior being from a fashion background ? Dior for example is one of the first brands to start a cosmetic line. The launch of the first perfume was in 1947, the same year the first fashion line was launched. They ventured into skincare in 1986. They have 4 research centers across the world and obviously hundrends if not thousands of experts working to create their products. Yes the product are expensive and that comes with the name. After all none is obliging anyone to spend their money. People do that willingly. Luxury consumers are looking for an experience beyong the actual product. You are free to argue that the ingredients are not groundbreaking for example but saying that a brand such as DIOR has nothing to do with cosmetics is flat out misinformation.
