LUKE PRESENTS: Nagra III Reel-to Reel Portable Tape Recorder!!!

To my utter surprise this had no description the whole time?!?!?!?!
Wow. Or maybe the description got glitched away.
The Nagra III was first designed in 1957, but the machines did not get produced until 1958 I believe. Original 1958 Nagra III's are rare, and this one is from 1965. The pilot-tone system for camera synchronization was first introduced in 1963. This unit has the pilot-tone feature, although it has not been tested. But I wouldn't be surprised if it works just fine. All of the other electronic circuitry is working perfectly with original parts. The only fixing this needed was a rubber ring around a section of the flywheel that is used for rewind. All original electrolytics are good.
This machine is a pleasure to use, and extremely heavy.
Has automatic and manual level control. 3-speed.

If you ever want to sell it please let me know I have been looking for a portable tape deck like this for years. I have a Pioneer RT 909 but I need to replace the capstan motor and the things is so heavy and not ideal for taking on the road LOL

Hey, do you know how these would be hooked up to record both ends of a telephone conversation? I'm writing a screenplay set in 1963 where a character records phone conversations using one of these tape recorders. For the record, she does it at her TV station job.

Either the telephone pickup coil on the telephone itself to an XLR jack for the microphone input connector, or if using the console/mixer (which I would imagine has telephone hooked in for people calling in), the aux output of it feeding the line-in banana jacks on the Nagra.

Why you turn on Nagra first and then engage tape transport? The 6 pin male Tuchel socket located under the accessory socket (indeed for external PSU like ATN, but also for BMII mixer) is pilot signal input/output. You can connect camera here (i.e. Arriflex 16BL) or Kudelski SLO synchronizer.

Standard banana plugs will provide a balanced 4.4V, 600Ω output.
