Nate gave Cassie a couple of carefree moments and moments - not hours, not days, not years - are the only form of true happiness Cassie will ever get. She'll never get a happily ever after and she knows it so moments like that are treasured by her and she clings to them like her life depended on it (because it does). The people who give those moments to her, she idealizes them and becomes a slave to them because she's constantly hoping those happy moments will repeat. If they made her happy once, they could do it again... if they want to... and she'd do anything to make them want to.
