The cassowary is a behemoth of the bird world (second-heaviest, behind the ostritch). They can grow to over six and a half feet tall, weigh well over 100 pounds, and gallop around at speeds of over thirty miles per hour - an impressive feat for a creature with legs that might best be described as "death-cudgels with knives attached." The middle toe on each one features a dagger-like claw that can grow up to five-inches long.

They aren't horrors, they're animals. Yes, they are deadly but they aren't monsters, they are simply territorial. They should be respected and given space. During 1967 near Cairns, a cassowary chased down and attacked two girls riding along a road on a motorbike. I was only 10 at the time so I don't remember the full details of the outcome but it was a front page.headline the next day. I was holidaying there for a few weeks with my parents. I myself was bitten by the savage Green Tree Ants while leaning casually against a tree and also smacked hard in the temple by a giant flying beetle, a Rhinocerois Beetle I think. Having to go to the toilet at the caravan park ablutions block at night was an actual nightmare. I had to pick my way through a carpet of giant cane toads leaping and flopping all around me. I could see them launching in my circle of torchlight and hear their weight flopping as they landed on the wet soil around me in the dark croaking their protests. I am very happy for the glorious and amazing, very necessary, rain forest to exist in the world and desperately want it to be saved and not fail under the pressure of population, climate change and commercialism...but...it is not my favourite dwelling environment. It has too many sneaky, scary and/or painful, living moving parts to it for my comfort zone.

@greg77389
@greg77389 6 жыл бұрын
Do you even know what an executioner does? There are two general definitions: One deals with carrying out a plan or order while the other deals with the punishment of death of a condemned person. If we adapt the 2nd definition, we could say to execute someone is to put someone down or kill someone who is already destined for death or "screwed." Indeed that's the only way this bird can effectively use its weapons to kill--if its target is already wounded or on the ground. If a healthy, able-bodied man were to fight one of these things head on, the man would most likely win.

I think the guy did everything for the most part right personally. I don't see him as trying to approach the Cassowary, but rather the Cassowary approached him.. The guy didn't run and turn his back which would have possibly triggered an attack. As for the Cassowary, it wasn't hissing, or snarling, or showing any of the behaviors associated with territoriality or aggression, but rather, curiosity. I firmly doubt the Cassowary was interested in harming him. so much so, that he might have been able to get away with just standing there motionless [covering his stomach and throat] till it left. Having said all that, this is the most dangerous, unpredictable, aggressive bird on the planet here and anything can happen. I think the only thing he did wrong was be in a position where the Cassowary was within easy arms reach. I'd have maintained at least 200m clearance personally.

+Ratel3000 The cassowary was absolutely approaching him. With a threatening posture. Backing up while facing it was exactly the right thing to do - however, every time the cassowary backed off, he stopped. He should have *continued* to back away after the cassowary stopped approaching him. The way that the bird raised itself up and arched its head is a territorial threat display, telling the man to back away. That is a prelude to more aggressive behaviour. Coupled with the sporadic preening the cassowary engaged in, it's a sign of a tense, anxious bird who wants the human to back the fuck up and give it space. Please don't forget that posture plays a huge part in determining bird behaviours.

The cassowary isn't out right aggressive. Just confidently curious and dominant. The self occupied preening at times is a gesture of allaying fear. The kick gesture in the second episode is only half hearted reminder of dominance. Overall this potentially lethal bird is cool and seeking a margin of interaction.

All these kids in the comments saying this guy got lucky or that the bird let him live.. bitch please. At the end of the day, these things know not to fuck with humans. There was only one of it and the guy it was stalking maintained eye contact and kept facing it so the bird never had an opportunity to strike. These things aren't the cold-blooded killing machines they used to be, they're just big birds with talons. They're nothing like the raptors which actually had arms to claw you with and a mouth like an alligator's, or a tail to whip you with.

The guy with the camera even told the guy next to the cassowary to regroup with everyone else that was probably behind the camera. The only reason the guy next to the cassowary hadn't already done so was probably because the cassowary was repeatedly approaching him, and was somewhat standing in between him and the others.

@graceweilbacher4307

For all you ornithologist claiming that this bird such a fearsome mankiller, why don't you do a little research. For one, the last reported death from a cassowary was in 1926, and that was a the death of a boy who was trying to club the bird; the boy fell to the ground and was kicked in the neck, puncturing a major blood vessel, where he ultimately bled out and died. The bird did not decapitate him with one swift kick. So one recorded death in 90 years does not make the bird a notorious "man-killer". Yeah, given the right circumstances, a kick from the bird could kill you, but so could a kick from a dairy cow or a pony in a petting zoo. The kick from the bird may cause puncture wounds or lacerations, but it is not going to slice a person like a surgeons scalpel. Other than the death in 1926, cite the other events where a person was killed by a cassowary or for that matter disemboweled by the bird; I'm not talking about rumor or folklore tales, but actual accounts from reputable sources of attacks by this bird that lead to the death of a human.

+I don’t know I don’t know I don’t know know know Yeah and I COULD disembowel you with my keychain, but that doesn't mean you're ever going to give me the opportunity to do so. It's pointless to come up with all these worst-case hypothetical scenarios of what can kill you because literally ANYTHING can kill you under the right circumstances. What matters is probability and the actual physics involved in a situation. An able-bodied man isn't just going to lie on the ground and give the bird and easy target to strike at. There's going to be a struggle, and overall the man has a much greater chance of killing or fending off the bird than the bird has of killing the man.

God they were lucky. Those things are living dinosaurs, and they have been known to kill people just for making eye contact for too long. No, you're supposed to maintain eye contact because the bird knows it will get fucked up if it attacks you head on. Humans are more of a threat to them than they are to us and they know it. Even without a weapon we can still kill one with our bare hands, whereas all the bird has is its talons. You stare that thing down and let it know you aren't weak and you're not afraid to fight. Only the strong and the cunning survive in nature and animals know this better than anyone, it's in their instincts.
@greg77389
@greg77389 6 жыл бұрын
No it's not "luck", these birds are low threat to humans, and stating they're dinosaurs is pointless because so is every other bird species. There are plenty of videos of humans getting close to these things and no one ever got hurt or died to them. Birds are the only known surviving dinosaurs and they are no longer apex predators.
