It sends an emergency signal that people can use to locate people when they are stranded in the middle of the ocean or on an island but because it got left in the plane and sank to the bottom of the ocean, people searching for survivors wouldn't be able to receive the signal and that's why he wasn't rescued

@gluuuuue2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I interpreted it as her husband trying to put what he thought was *her* emotional welfare first. Because he seems to have expected her to just emotionally break down, be overcome with grief and guilt (as she was clearly showing when she stepped out of the car). He almost certainly has also had to be there for her while she dealt with Chuck's presumed death and the effects of that loss on her. I don't think he was without empathy at all, either for her or for Chuck, but, since she's his wife, he obviously puts her first.

I didn't grasp the full significance of Wilson the first time I saw this movie. It took me some time to piece it together. The full emotional significance of Wilson extends from the innate, pathological need most human beings have to see another _face._ Even a face that's _clearly_ not a real face is preferrable to _never ever_ seeing _anything_ facelike.
@davestang54543 ай бұрын
He also needed someone to talk to, anyone who would listen, even if that "someone" was merely symbolic. One of the few things I did not like about this movie was that a human being, denied interactions with other people for a long period of time, would likely change his speech patterns and social norms. Lacking any standards to maintain, he might even forget may words or how to properly express himself. The man who was rescued might have acted and sounded very different than the man who was lost several years before.
@lifelover5152 жыл бұрын
You're right Magy. Hanks is good in everything - he brings 100 per cent commitment even though his characters don't really vary that much. He's always the straight arrow, unerring in delivering the core of the movie. Your emotional response was sincere and appropriate as usual. Well done.

I really like this ending, particularly the two metaphorical and symbolic messages at the end. The more obvious "crossroads of life" where he has to now choose which way to go and the second not so obvious is he is now in a place so far from water, essentially farmland. So far from where he spent his life while he was stranded on the island. Almost the opposite.
@davestang54543 ай бұрын
I agree with your first point but disagree with your second point. When he is standing at the crossroads he is still out in the middle of a figurative "sea" and it feels similar to him. The same would be true if that sea was set in the middle of the desert. You can "drown" (be overwhelmed by) any open expanse. the point being not what his surroundings were but what was his place in it and what direction he would choose to take. In my opinion, the expression on his face at the end of the movie was the most poignant moment of the movie. He no longer felt "lost".

great reaction to another wonderful performance by the awesome Tom Hanks, and I love how you analyzed the themes of keeping going even when there seems to be no hope to be found.... and how even after making through such a trying time and only to find that what kept him going was ultimately lost to him and at the end found a glimmer of hope that fate may have placed and yes, we all were very attached to a volleyball back in the day... and if memory serves, I think that for a limited time, the Wilson sports company made a limited run of volleyballs with "Wilson's face" printed on it! Awesome as always, Mags! And as you know, there are a lot of Tom Hanks movies, but one that might interest you that is a bit different and might be the first movie I recall with him as the lead character is "Bachelor Party", as it is a bit on the cheesy comedy side, but iirc Tom was still great and very young as I think it was the first movie that he was the main character... and at the time he was known more for his comedic acting....

Tom Hanks does a superb job of carrying Cast Away all by himself for about two-thirds of its running time by never straining for effect, always persuasive even in this unlikely situation, winning our sympathy with his eyes and his body language when there's no one else on the screen. Although, there was no music playing in the background, until Alan Silvestri compose at the half-end of the film through the sad moments. Maybe so, but a bit of a stretch. Wilson is the most popular maker of volleyballs in the U.S. and one of the top manufacturers of sporting goods in the world, so the name of the ball would likely be Wilson. Also Wilson is a proper first or last name.

It's an open ending where essentially everyone can decide what happens next and that's presented also visually: he slightly smile meaning he could follow the redhead lady, but on the right side of the screen we can see the open road where he could go and move on, the screen is literally split in half between these 2 possibilities. I personally believe that he followed the redhead but in real life it's more likely that Kelly would divorce after some time and they would get together again.

Replaces the volleyball with a giant sea turtle, who has goofy faces and burps when eating but teaches Tom Hank's character how to fish. After his rescue when he finds out Kelly is married his demeanor changes there's no doubt He loved Kelly very much and she him but at her house when she opens the refrigerator door " Bam " there it is right in his face pictures on the fridge door of Kelly with her new family in different family situations this why Chuck tells her in the car you have to go home he knows he can't be the reason to break up her family , this why when he's talking to his friend he say's I've lost her all over again he knows their relationship as a couple is over , then he says " I know what I have to do now. I've got to keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the TIDE could bring ". As Chuck is delivering the Angel Wings package he looks at the sign at the ranch Dick's name is gone It's just Bettinas . Kelly's watch had given him hope but he gave it back to her , but on the package he writes "This package Saved My Life " After Bettina gives him directions as she's driving away he see's the Angel Wings on her truck, as he's standing at crossroads by his expression you can tell it's beginning to click . It was Bettina that the TIDE had brought to him all along via her package , It was Bettina that saved his life via the package . It was his fate that he find Bettina .

I like your new studio, Magy. It looks nice, especially with baby Yoda nearby. Thank you for selecting a dark background color, because you're right, it does make it more comfortable to watch your videos.

In this one, Tom Hanks makes us cry. He can make you laugh, too. "The 'Burbs" (1989) is a comedy, or "dark comedy". Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) is his wife.

It just occurred to me, in the plane crash he was out of his seat while the pilots were strapped in. And he's the one that survived. Ironic.

The pilots really had no choice. They were trying "ditch" the plane in the safest possible way.

"....spending the rest of my life talking to a goddamn volleyball!" That is actually a very important line. It informs the audience that Chuck has NOT gone insane.

16:28. I seriously doubt that! I’m sure, you would find a way! You are so incredible, you have so much personal value, that I’m sure you would fugue everything out! The world needs you, and you would ascertain, diagnose and concur! I am sure of it!

Wow, what a beautiful reaction! This movie, like Forest Gump, shows the will and determination of the human spirit, to survive and keep moving forward, no matter what life throws at you. It’s a wonderful film….

Wilson should have won an Oscar for best supporting actor.

Thanks for reacting to one of my all-time faves! Another really good Tom Hanks movie is Road to Perdition. It stars another great actor in Paul Newman. It is definitely worth a watch! 😊

6:01 - In real life it's physically impossible for a plane to crash that fast unless the plane loses its wings and probably not even in that case. 6:14 - This is why we should always keep our belts fastened on a plane. 16:42 - Coconut is laxative so you'd do something else after a lot of coconut... 20:15 - Without tools that's the minimum he could do and probably wasn't enough because to cure an abscess you should cut through the gums and remove the sack that collects pus. 22:24 - My favourite thing about this movie is that we all related so much to see Wilson as an actual character. 26:31 - When I watched this in theater, everybody around me was crying. I was a child and felt super weird. 27:06 - He lost it when he lost Wilson. The scene after that he leaves his oars into the sea and lie down on the raft. 37:04 - In a Fedex advertisement (I think) they made a joke about it and revealed that inside the package there was a satellite telephone he could've used. 37:14 - I wish I could see your reaction to the fact that he had another Wilson ball in the car.

Losing Wilson is very symbolic. Wilson was the last reminiscent of Chuck's life on that island, so he needed to left it behind in order to completely go back to the civilisation. Notice how he gets rescued soon after Wilson is gone.

Magy, I LOVE your reactions, especially for this movie. You ‘get it’. This film delivers a beautiful message. But like you, the ending still hurt me. Bittersweet….

I just watched an 8min vid of the special effects on making this movie. Interesting, like 12:00. The the night scene was filmed in the day. That's a filter.

In the very beginning it showed that he was a experienced sailor. Without that training he never would have gotten off the island.

Movie plots like to show the audience what kind of person the protagonist is, his skills, flaws, mindset, etc, usually in the beginning, It's what they DON'T reveal at first that fascinates me.
