I have done a video on faceted stones in the past, but that was before my fancy new phone with super zoom camera!
Please enjoy the close up detail of how I cast in place faceted stones in sand casting.

Hi everyone im a sand caster. And i am so glad i watched this today because i was missing two important things in this video. 1. I wasnt packing the male side upside down. Doing this gets a cleaner surface. 2. I wasnt gently packing around the object with my fingers. Thank you for this video!!😊

For anyone wondering... your metal will expand. So even if its not perfectly set its still good. I didnt know this till a week ago.😊 This project gives me a chance to use my small CZs. Also re crisping wasnt in my process till i saw your videos. 👍

Beautiful work! I have been casting sterling in delft clay for quite some time... but have yet to cast gems in place! I have some lovely stones that were mined local to me, I think your video has inspired me to take the leap and just do it. Really though, absolutely stunning work here!

Thank you so so much for these fantastic videos Kirra-lea! I was hoping to attend one of your classes up north this year, but it wasn't meant to be. These really hit the spot until it's possible. Something I find challenging as a hobbyist (i.e. making it up as I go along) is finding suppliers of stones. The whole process is quite daunting (Where do I find them? How much should they cost? Are they good quality? Are they ethically sourced?? Is it ok to buy online or is brick and mortar shop better?). I for one would love a video with some tips, particularly from an Australian perspective :) Keep up the amazing work 🎉🎉

@sandcasting_with_kirralea
@sandcasting_with_kirralea 3 жыл бұрын
I havent really come across a problem, sometimes they change colour. But mostly the colour change is because the stone has metal behind it in full contact so its darker. Hope that helps :)

I'm a sand caster and I thought I'd answer your question. Math wise sterling silver has a gravity of 10.4 grams. So weigh your original ring and × 10.4. So if your original ring is 2 grams....10.4 × 2 = 20.8 g. You can always go over a bit. Extra weight actually helps. Eye ball it and get as much silver as your object plus big sprue hole

Unimaginable! You're casting the ring with the stones directly! Doesn't that damage the gemstones in any way? That's a completely new concept for me.

I also have this problem. My two solutions are cutting up the casting and bending it until the stones pop out. But when that is not an option I will melt the silver down and fish the stones out of the liquid metal :)
