@shadowcard69237 жыл бұрын
you defined a billet style construction, forged is forming the wheel by pressure from a press to make it into the shape progressively, the forge construction directs the grain to handle stress, the cast ends up with a large grain because the grain isn't shrunk by pressure, billet has varying grain typically smaller and in all directions for an overall decent handling of stress but have better overall tolerances.
@KewlKat5 жыл бұрын
+Shadowcard, ditto. That's the first thing that I noticed. This guy doesn't have the knowledge of forged vs. gravity cast vs. billet. There are also low-pressure cast wheels, tilt-cast wheels, and then flow-formed versions of both of those types. Tirerack has a great info section about these things.

@jeepcj7dude3 жыл бұрын
@@neilbowness6074 you guys are technically both correct. But usually in cost saving measures you take billet piece(forged hot or cold rolled) and heat it and press it into shape again closer to the desired end product followed by machining.

You didn't describe forged, you described billet. Forging involves heating and pressing. Hence forging the metal whether it's aluminum or magnesium.
@Sherman622 жыл бұрын
True, and while a billet can be forged, it likely won't have the advantages in grain structure that a more finished forging can. The video does address the advantages of lighter weight wheels in a seat of the pants way though. Not sure if he mentioned the improvement in braking performance, which is just as real as the acceleration improvement.

You're confusing billet and forged.
@thomasdickason38845 жыл бұрын
Its the same thing:- In contrast to casting, a forged wheel begins as a solid piece of metal referred to as a “billet”. This billet is then subjected to heat and intense pressure, which compresses the material to form a raw forging. These raw forgings are “forged” into different profiles to allow for the creation of different wheel designs.
@goddesseddog2 жыл бұрын
Indeed. His definition of flow form is forged, which is also referred to as flow form by some companies
@shadowknows38822 жыл бұрын
@@thomasdickason3884 No a true billet wheel starts as an aluminum blank which is cnc machined for design, bolt pattern, and offset. That machined center is then mated to a spun outer hoop that is heated to allow the center to be inserted and centered, to two pieces are then welded together. A forged wheel is heated, formed, machined and then attached to the outer hoop by welding, bolts or even rivets. True Billet Wheels are used best for show vehicles only as they are fragile, will bend at the slightest pothole and are expensive to repair. I know this from running Boyd Codington Billets for years.

I vote LPC. Gravity fed, even being flow formed, still have their inherent weaknesses. Vertical LPC wheels will create a generally stronger wheel than a gravity cast wheel. Also, many LPC wheels are flow-formed as well.
@amschind2 жыл бұрын
It seems like folks are very confused by this. These are racing wheels, and the cast wheel meets his strength and rigidity requirements. Therefore, the benefit of the forged wheel is hitting the same strength and stiffness requirements while using less material to do so. The entire point of using forged aluminum is the ability to use less material, visible as a different wheel design.

The forged wheels look like they have 2 different bolt patterns, but they actually just have open holes between each lug hole. I wouldn't be surprised if it was for weight reduction, but these wheels are only 5x114.3. The holes however will account for a small weight loss, but not a near 10 pounds per wheel.

Comparing apple with oranges. I guess the important thing to realize is that the forged comes out stronger, and therefore you don't need the same amount of mass for it to be strong and meet the specs. On the other hand with the cast you must retain thickness to meet the specs, and therefore it has to come heavier.

Finally someone who somewhat understands wheels. The VMR are gravity cast, not low pressure cast or roll forged on the rim. It is heavy and weak, but cheap. Your description of a forged wheel is in fact a CNC machined wheel. Unless the block ingot is forged, it is still a cast wheel in grain structure and strength. A true forged wheel is metal that is put under tons of pressure in a press, then machined to present a finished wheel to any further cosmetic enhancements. It is strong, light,more durable and thus expensive, Might view some BBS videos to see how wheels are actually forged. Rays Engineering makes excellent forged wheels.

Are you running the same weight tires? The most noticeable time that I find the difference is when I break traction, especially in a RWD car. The lighter wheel will allow you to spin at a lower RPM since there is less rotational mass to be spun.

You look very young but very knowledgeable! I was looking for things to disagree with you but I can't. Although there is definite weight differences between cast and forged, you cannot forget that the design (spoke) of the wheel has to do with the difference in weight as well. There is obvious less material in a wheel design that is simpler or less complex thus less weight.

You are confused. There are cast, forged, and "billet" or machined. Cast is more or less as you describe. Machined is what you are calling forged. Forged is taking a piece of metal, heating it up, and pressing it into a die in one way or another. Rotary forming is similar to forging in that it gets heated, but it is turned while a forming roller shapes the wheel sometimes against a die.

ehhhhhh. sure forged wheels are lighter, but your specific comparison is a little misleading. that cast wheel looks like it's got a lot more metal. the spokes are a little thinner, but there are far more of them. might be hard to do, but to do a real comparison, you need to get the exact same wheel. to get at least a somewhat accurate comparison, you need to get wheels that are very similar, which is not hard to do.

Forging an alloy wheel is take a lump of billet heating it to near melting point and using a hydraulic ram to press it into a mould. The process is similar to extrusion but the temperature is lower and the force greater. The the plug has been shaped and quenched it is then machined into the final shape. What he described is a billet machined wheel which is stronger than a cast wheel but weaker than a forged wheel.
