Understand some of the key points in the book Caste. The author, Isabel Wilkerson, compares three Caste systems: India, Nazi Germany, and the United States, which has a caste system based on race.
Race is an arbitrary construct, created by Americans, as arbitrary as, for example, using height to determine superiority and inferiority. (min 4:40)
She describes 8 Pillars of a Caste system (min 7:55)

Great recap! I liked how you framed the summary, the use of the author's own words/ 'quotes' and still gave so many reasons to act and read a copy.

The U.S. caste system was certainly active through the 1960s; but fortunately has been diminishing very quickly in the past 50 years. Isabel Wilkerson's book gives a decent historical comparison with India and Nazi Germany. More focus, however, needs to be made on solutions. One major step forward will be ending the war on drugs and utilizing a drug rehabilitation model coupled with employment/education. And education is not just university level, but vocational level. Re-funding, as opposed to de-funding, the police to be less militaristic and more social service oriented. And what Bernie Sanders preached, Medicare (I say Medicaid/TriCare) for all. My parents utilized their Medicare and my father's military TriCare to cover 100% of their medical costs so that we could focus on their health. These types of reforms would go far to ending racism, classism, and the remnants of the old caste system.

As she told the worst is the stigma which is very difficult to erase. Even if someone is not doing anything adverse the stigma remains.

Bought it this week. Anyone who tries to devalue or discredit this book is deeply invested in maintaining the status quo because it benefits them, so they will resort to negativity and denial in their reviews. I've seen it happen with Robin D'angelo's book, "White Fragility."

Question: how can ‘you’ now reach out to the larger American population in a ‘a more simplified language’. Based on this understanding can one not work on building discussion forums to improve on this terrible divide that has come about in the US? I live in Belgium, I’m just another listener to the radio etc and it pains us to hear all the negative news that often comes out of the US.

Interesting book but I could answer all these claims with counter evidence and real data. Most notably, how anglo-european whites are not at the top economic tier of our society....in fact, there are several groups of "blacks" who do better. It's not that there's not some validity to these ideas, it's that she's doing a 1 dimensional analysis of extremely complicated social issues. Factor in culture, crime, parenting, dynamics between men and women, welfare, proclivity for learned helplessness, and the picture really changes. These things apply equally to all peoples...black, white, and all others. The US is not India though....that's laughable.
