EN Castell'Arquato: why this name? First of all, it must be said that in the 2nd century BC, a certain Roman knight, Caio Torquato, had already taken possession of this place, placing a fortress there and thus giving rise to the denomination Castel Torquato. This name transformed over time into the current "Castell'Arquato". However, we also have a second hypothesis that would instead derive the name Castell'Arquato from the square structure of the Castle: Castel Quadrato. Hence the current name Castell'Arquato would have been derived.
The Rocca Viscontea was built on the initiative of Piacenza in 1342. The Rocca was reinforced and completed by Luchino Visconti in 1347. The Rocca Viscontea looks like an imposing brick building and had a purely defensive function facilitated by its position. In fact, Rocca Visvontea occupies a strategically dominant position over the surrounding valley. Furthermore, the high tower overlooking the village square had the dual function of defense from external enemies and control over the inhabitants.
The fortress, located on the site of a Roman military settlement (called Castrum Quadratum), has an unusual shape. The structure is surrounded by a double order of walls: the lowest, which is also wider, covers two levels, where the soldiers usually resided and where, in case of danger, citizens could take refuge; the highest wall, perpendicular to the other, was reserved for the command of the garrison. The high tower, an excellent observation point, was built for defensive and military purposes and never became a noble residence.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, until the 1960s, the Rocca was used as a prison. In 1985 in Castell'Arquato, many scenes of the film "Ladyhawke" were shot with Michelle Pfeiffer, Rutger Hauer, and Mattew Broderick.

Castell’Arquato: come mai questo nome? Bisogna innanzitutto dire che nel II secolo AC, un certo cavaliere romano Caio Torquato aveva già preso possesso di questo luogo, ponendovi un fortilizio e dando origine cosí alla denominazione Castel Torquato, nome che trasformandosi nel tempo diventò l’attuale « Castell’Arquato ». Abbiamo però anche una seconda ipotesi che farebbe invece derivare la deno¬minazione Castell’Arquato dalla struttura quadrata del Castello: Castel Qua¬drato. Da qui ne sarebbe derivato l’odierno nome Castell’Arquato.
La Rocca Viscontea fu costruita su iniziativa della città di Piacenza nel 1342, la Rocca fu rinforzata ed ultimata da Luchino Visconti nel 1347. La Rocca Viscontea si presenta come un’imponente edificio di mattoni ed aveva una funzione prettamente difensiva facilitata dalla sua posizone. Infatti la Rocca Visvontea occupa una posizione strategicamente dominante sulla vallata circostante. Inoltre, l’alta torre svettante sulla piazza del borgo svolgeva la doppia funzione di difesa da nemici esterni e di controllo sugli abitanti.
La fortezza, ubicata sul sito dove sorgeva un insediamento militare romano (chiamato Castrum Quadratum), presenta una forma inconsueta. La struttura è circondata da un doppio ordine di mura: la più bassa, che è anche più larga, copre due livelli, dove abitualmente risiedevano i soldati e dove, in caso di pericolo, si potevano rifugiare i cittadini; la cinta più alta, perpendicolare all’altra, era riservata al comando della guarnigione. L’alta torre, ottimo punto di osservazione, era stata costruita per scopi difensivi e militari e non è mai diventata una residenza nobiliare.
Nel XIX e XX secolo, fino agli anni ’60, la Rocca è stata adibita a prigione. Nel 1985 a Castell’Arquato sono state girate molte scene del film “Ladyhawke” con Michelle Pfeiffer, Rutger Hauer e Mattew Broderick.
