Vilafranca has been an absolute joy to watch this year. Most of the bigger colles have been easing back into things, but Vilafranca has been really pushing forward. They were the most aggressive colla at the Concurs and to finish the year with this is really quite amazing. I can't wait for next year.

Dear Nicholas, I'm afraid it'll be a while before we see another performance like this. Of course the other best colles (at list both Xiquets de Valls, Terrassa and Tarragona) will work hard to improve their level and competitiveness. But this milestone is absolutely historic and very difficult to equal, let alone surpass. In any case, I agree that competitiveness in this new season will be breathtaking.

Avui hi han catalans de quasi 200 idiomes materns diferents, i de ben segur, només el Barça pot competir amb els Castells en capacitat d'integració i cohesió social.

In fact the cheerful "poor little girl" that worries you can be seen celebrating her success at 5:27 She always says that she has never been afraid to go up.

No sé si us passa el mateix que a mi, que sempre que comencen a sentir-se les primeres notes de les gralles. Se'm posa la pell de gallina i m'omplo d'emoció al veure aquesta colla de dones, homes i canalla amb molta valentia i mirant només cap a munt seguint les instruccions del cap de colla per acabar fent castells amb màxima dificultat com aquest pilar de 9 amb folra, manilles i puntals que acaben d'aconseguir carregar els castellers de Vilafranca. També recordo quan van aconseguir descarregar un castell que m'agrada molt, el 3 de 8 carregat desde sota. Catalunya té un patrimoni cultural meravellós, llengua, gastronomia, tradició i sobretot un dels plaers que dóna la vida poder veure arquitectura humana, assaig darrera assaig amb esforç i constància per aconseguir aquests grans resultats. Bona feina feta als castellers de Vilafranca i sobretot a tot el món casteller per fer gaudir als que estimem aquesta manera tant digne de fer país.

És fantàstic. Quan m'enyoro (visc a Alemanya de fa 12 anys) miro vídeos de castellers😊. Tot just ara he fet cap a aquest vídeo perquè jugava amb la meva filla a fer castells (hi ha un joc d'una empresa de Reus que es diu "el nan casteller travel") i sempre li poso música típica quan juguem (i com a tu, les primeres notes de gralla també em posen la pell de gallina). Amb els castells es poden ensenyar moltes coses: treball en equip, tenacitat, etc. Quina sort tenim, de poder formar part d'una cultura tan rica!

No des nada por sentado, Rapaz Golez. Hoy en dia las mejores Colles cuentan todas ellas con ingenieros y sofisticados programas informáticos para diseñar sus Castells. Y al margen del buen rollo, que en el mundo casteller se da por descontado, la competencia entre ellas es feroz. Puedes dar por descontado que esta nueva temporada será sobrecogedora. Seguim!

It was a very difficult tower, nobody has been able to do one like that before. There is 4 ways of finishing a castell, as: "intent" (attempt, when it falls before building it), "intent desmuntat" (disassembled attempt, when it doesn't fall but they disassembly it before finishing ), "carregat" (assembled, when they finish building it but falls on the disassembly) and "descarregat" (disassembled, meaning assembled and disassembled). Only the last two are considered successful attempts. So after months or years of practicing it they were the firsts to assemble (carregar) a tower like that, and after the fall nobody was hurt so double win 🙂

It's very safe compared to most sports, but there have been, I think, four recorded deaths. A 12 year old died some years ago, which led to helmets being worn in the top three levels in 2006. Overall though, it's pretty safe.

​@@baltasarcaubet8271 unfortunately you're wrong, there has been two deaths in 150 years of having registries about that in castells, but from 1936 to the 1970s the government repressed the expressions of catalan culture and there were not many castell exhibitions in those years (so really 115 years of actually doing exhibitions with registries of injuries). It's sad that they put the helmets, mouth protections and other protections only after Mariona's accident, it should've been way before...

This Catalan tradition dates back to centuries ago, just as the Indian one. They both have their particularities and uniqueness. Since the Indian towers have recently been influenced by the Catalan castellers more organized structures, there's a healthy competition between both, to see who makes the highest tower. At some point the Indians had this record, but as far as I know it quickly returned back to the Catalans after the firsts 10 stories castells were made :)

That boy you are talking about is a girl. Her parents are probably also part of the colla. Anyone who watched this live saw the interview with the girl shortly after this. Whole families participate together, along with neighbors and friends. These collas train how to do this and safety is a big part of that. There have been four documented deaths in Castells in over 250 years. Americans have no problem sending their kids onto the field to play football or baseball, and neither of these sports can boast a record like that.

@@robert111k I just meant to clarify about it being a girl. Thank goodness this isn't disappearing, and no one is sending kids up to be sacrificed. Catalans rightly take a huge amount of pride in doing castells. These are all amateurs and it's a huge community activity. Collas (teams) do more than just make towers. They host community events, donate to charities, etc. Castells is safer than almost any other team sport, and certainly than any contact sport. 30 years ago there were a handful of teams. Now there are over 100, including university teams. The fact is this has never been more popular in Catalonia. As an American, I love seeing a community working together to do something like this rather than the chest thumping "look at me" silliness of any of the major North American sports. Barbaric is sending boys and men out to pummel each other into oblivion to get a football across the goal line, yet we (the USA) put billions of dollars towards cheering that on.

Doncs si, per que és l'assoliment d'una fita col·lectiva, llargament planificada, treballada i desitjada, on mai res es deixa a l'atzar. No pots ni imaginar els llaços, complicitats i sentiment de comunitat que generen els castells, per que no hi ha res de comparable. I a més son la màxima expressió de la manera de ser i de fer del poble català. Y si me permites un consejo en tu idioma (así lo aproveches del todo), nunca olvides que la envidia sigue al mérito como la sombra al cuerpo, y que además acorta la vida.
