So very cool to see how you put the tower together! Can’t wait until the next video.

When I cast, after pouring, I just use the back of a paint brush & rub around the whole mold. I just rinse the mold to make sure there aren't any leftover pieces. So far it's worked well. I use hydro-stone for mine, I get a 50lb. bag for around $40. :)

I read somewhere that for making this particular tower, take a Pringles can and use that to put the sides of the tower around. The can is pretty much exactly the size you need for the correct diameter for the tower. Just don't let the blocks get glued to the can. It makes for really straight vertical sides that don't lean inward or outward.

I have a very weird way of doing this that eliminates bubbles entirely. Pour wet-water to completely fill the mold. Remove all bubbles with toothpick or whatever. Pour plaster directly into the water-filled mold. The water is fully displaced by the plaster (do this in a tray!) leaving a fully clean cast.

I've never seen a Hirst build from the very beginning of a full-on project. Definitely makes me think twice about my "scrap only" aesthetic. Thanks for this.

There’s a point in the video where it’s nearly 12 mins of time lapse. I left it like this because I felt the stacking of the bricks was largely self explanatory. Also the instructions I linked to provide far greater detail than I can provide here and thought it’d be best to let the craft do the talking. What do you guys think of that kind of presentation? How do you guys feel about Hirst molds? Sound off below!!

Re air bubbles....paint some of the casting medium into the mold first making sure you catch all the detail.

world of 28mm I’d say 80% of what I casted had no defects whatsoever. So it’s not all bad. I’ll try that! Sounds like the same technique used to cast silicone masks come to think of it. Only complication I see is possibly the plaster drying partially while painting it on and it making chunks in the mold. But then again probably not anything quite so egregious as that. Thanks for the tip!

I really have to buy some of these molds. Only downside for me is, that I would like them to be 30 mm scale and not 1 inch
@TheDungeonMattster
@TheDungeonMattster 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a definite disadvantage. They make a beautiful product when they’re all assembled. With ruins and the like you would probably be okay. I’d see the heights of walls being more of an issue. And the grid could be ignored entirely I suppose. They definitely were made with 28mm scale in mind.

There is a process that can increase the size of a mold. If you go to Smooth-on they have a video on how to do it. :)

I saw something on this a while ago. I was thinking of increasing a couple of my homemade molds.

Older vid but still relevant for beginners... I'm worried a bit about the weight of such a piece. If you have cast 18 times and used more or less 180 grams of powder per casting (let's say 150 grams actually in the blocks) that would mean that this tower would roughly weigh in at 2.7 kg or 6 pounds? Is that correct-ish?
@TheDungeonMattster
@TheDungeonMattster 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know exactly how much it weighs but I can tel you it isn’t “light.” Definitely some heft to it.

I wanted to try out hirst arts molds for a while, cause the details looks so crisp. but they're pretty pricey.. you tower looks sick, how long did that take overall? so casting and building?
@TheDungeonMattster
@TheDungeonMattster 4 жыл бұрын
leurehc I estimate each casting to take roughly 30 mins including mixing, pouring, pounding, scraping, drying, unmolding. Needed 18 casts to make the whole thing. I made 20 for spare parts. 30x20/60=10 hours. Then it took roughly that again to put the tower together over a span of days. Total build time without paint was ~20 hours.

30 minutes a batch? not to bad actually. i really think i'd love the process of building with these blocks, its basically lego for grown men lol
@TheDungeonMattster
@TheDungeonMattster 4 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly! Instead of interlocking bricks, you get pva glue. Instead of being able to take them apart and build something else, you simply make more. 🤪
