Thomas, stainless is actually quite a soft/weak metal (- especially compared with carbon steel). Stainless is really bad at heat-transfer, so if you start to 'work' stainless (- e.g. drilling/ cutting), the heat rapidly builds up locally, which work-hardens it and it becomes extremely difficult to 'work' further. If you keep the material temperature low when working it (- really slow drill speed or cooling fluid), the stainless remains soft.
@RangieNZ4 жыл бұрын
@@awashburn6944 Heh Aaron, there are several ways to harden the metal. When you're drilling/ cutting it, the heat comes from the friction on the drilling/cutting bit. After it gets hot (- I've seen stainless get red hot from a drill bit, then promptly destroy the bit), it can change state into a very hard material. If you use a sharp drill bit and cut slowly with cooling fluid, you don't cause additional hardening to take place.
@northernmetalworker2 жыл бұрын
@@RangieNZ I'm a machinist, yes, high drill rpm reduces your chances of good drilling. But it isn't a heat issue as much as it is a tool pressure issue, if your drill is dull, or you aren't cutting into new material continuously, you will end up with a work hardened surface. But a work hardened surface is not the same as a thermally hardened surface. It's more akin to when you bend a copper wire, it's more difficult to bend it straight again, it's the same principle.

You build a ruddy great furnace. Put 10 tons of coal at the bottom, 10 tons of limestone (flux), 10 tons of iron ore. Build a 300-foot high chimney to get a draught and inject oxygen. Chuck a match in and stand well back! When I was a boy Sheffield had 13 of these in a row in a shed 1 mile long with 3 railway lines going through, the smoke and red glow at night could be seen 30 miles away. My grandfather drove the electric crane to tip the boiling steel into ingots ready for rolling into railway lines or steel girders. Steel, Peach and Tozer was the name of the company.

304 is an austenitic stainless steel. Depending on the Cr/Ni ratio it can also contain up to 25% of a constituent in the microstructure known as ferrite. Other elements also affect the ferrite formation. When ferrite above about 3% is present the material will exhibit a slight magnetic attraction. More ferrite = a higher tensile strength and reduced low temperature properties.

How come you can cast that in the open air, and I can't weld stainless without argon?
@themadmachinist86372 жыл бұрын
Because oxidation contaminates the welding of 2 separate parts and this is cast as a homogeneous part. They use a flux to deox and degas the material before casting.
@michaelabraham91772 жыл бұрын
@@themadmachinist8637 so the answer would be flux lol
@themadmachinist86372 жыл бұрын
@@michaelabraham9177 the oxide contamination would have existed in this material even if it had been melted in an argon environment because it was already a part of the material when melted so no. The answer is that the process itself doesn't require an inert atmosphere unless you're dealing with something exotic like titanium. The flux is to purify the material for the pour. The inert gas in welding is to prevent your joint from getting contaminated more than the material already is in order to form a homogeneous bond between the filler and parent materials
@michaelabraham91772 жыл бұрын
@@themadmachinist8637 so basically if I'm understanding (probably not) the flux is not like the flux on welding rods, or the solar flux i smeared on the joints on the inside of my stainless steel exhaust before welding, but instead something to purify the metal?

@@michaelabraham9177 yes. In welding you can use inert gas instead of flux. in casting you can not.

This is the same method used to make golden and silver jewelry and stuff with for like... 10,000 years? Guojian Sword was made this way too, I think Oh, and when pouring, I think the trick is 1, uninterrupted stream, so it's it's one piece, or you get bubbles and things like that... with 3D printing, Billet cuts are popular lately, but steel casting, is the ultimate strength, it is a Billet, basically. My idea is to use 3d printing, and 3d laser image scanning, and drill heads (milling) on 3D printing tools, to make the molds, and templates, that the molds are made from, while saving everything digitally... that way each part can be edited. So template (or scan a model, from hand carved or anythin, 3D laser image scan), then edit, or size change, and save progress like a video game, then, mold is produced, steel is heated poured, then, mold is cut, polish, kiln, chemicals, assemble... one man assembly line
