Sorry I just saw your message. We use 20lb primeum mono. Not going After big sharks. Maybe 5ft at the most big red bass and black drum. We have used 30lb mono with 30lb braid as a backing works good for more line capacity just in case.

This is great, I've seen a couple of your reel videos. I just picked up a Penn Leveline 350. So, during the cast you let the spool run without thumb pressure? And just add your thumb at three end of the cast? Thanks

cnymtb : you need some magnets to control the spin of the spool. There are lots of youtuber doing the magnet installation and i just follow them. With the large reels you need lots of magnet. With this 4/0 i think i have 6 row double stack on the plate side, not on the spool. Just gave enough clearance for the spool to spin without rubbing. And but still i have some overrun after the weight hits the water

As my english is soooo poor, I will try to write you using the Google Translator and I hope you get understand! I have little experience in fishing, but I really enjoy spending a few hours fishing, together with my wife ... I don't know if it's one right way but when it have to stop the spinning reel, instead of holding it over the line, I got used to holding it on the side of the reel. Never again did I burn my fingers doing it that way and I don't even know if it's a good alternative to do the launch... Anyway, congratulations on the beautiful video. A big hug from the extreme south of Brazil (In portuguese, Brasil)...

If you want to avoid burning your finger I found that spraying water out of a spray bottle on the line on a penn jigmaster 500 will help you avoid it. I usually cast 8 ounces as well to help slow down the spool

Don't use a snapping movement when you cast, you want it slow and smooth. Think of the rod as a catapult, you want the line taunt when you make your swing, the power comes from loading your rod.

When I cast a conventional, I watch the bait/lure and put my thumb on the spool the moment it hits the water. That keeps overruns to a minimum. With practice you'll get no birdsnests

+Leon Wellisch I've owned one since middle 80's (Penn 500L Jigmaster, aluminium spool), most important, starts even before you begin the cast : Tighten your spool tension knob to the max, then wind in your line until your sinker is at top of rod tip. Now free your spool - at this point your sinker will just sit there without moving. Now very slowly, mm by mm, start loosening your spool tension knob, until the sinker just start dropping. This you should do every time you start fishing, as well as every time you change sinkers and/or bait size. This will prevent birds nest at the start, and the end of the cast - however, as shown in video, wear a thumb protector, and when the sinker has reached the end of the cast and starts dropping towards the water, lightly thumb the spool. Also : Try not to cast too 'violently' at the start - it should be a smooth action, speeding up to the end of the cast - head position is important, be sure to look up 45 degr to where you will release the spool when casting - do this and in no time you will cast like a champ. Later you may loosen the spool tension knob a little more as you get more seasoned. Making sure you clean and oil your reel (very easy with the Jigmaster) is obviously also important after every fishing session. You have a good reel, it will then last you a lifetime. I have more recent, more expensive Daiwa Beachmaster reel, and though it's a beauty, my Penn 500L JM remains my favourite, it's still my go-to reel. I've brought in many big bronzies with it, no problem (South Africa).

razzorbladz : thats true. I hav a yellow alvey before. Its not for me. 2 other guy tested it and they dont like it too. But everybody has their own preference. So whatever fits your budget nor the way you fish is the important thing there. I made this video coz lots of people laugh everytime they see somebody fishing with big conventionals on the surf coz they thought its a “boat reel” in the big island in hawaii they even casting bigger reel with 60lbs mono and 100lbs leader and landing gaint GTs so lack off knowledge sometime leads to arrogance

I have a penn 9/0 id only use for a boat reel I've tried casting its not for me,you need to practice too much to not make birds nests prefer plus its on a 100kg tuna pole which is not a casting rod,in Australia we use Alveys for the beach fishing once you master an Alvey they are great for skull dragging big fish but you need to spool the line properly and use a swivel or you get bird nests from line twist,the record for a fish on an Alvey is a 113 pound spanish mackrel,was the yellow one you had a cheap plastic one or a vintage fiberglass one with a stainless steel back? I'm not a fan of the new ones even if they are indestructible LOL

Put 40 to 50lb mono on the 500. We use that with 13-14 ft rods here paired with 5-8oz. Easier to take out backlash with bigger line. No magging either, just an educated thumb, even on the 114HL(W). The 3/0 would take 50lb test and the 4/0 would normally take 60lb, with 6-10 oz leads. Also, don't tighten the spool tension on the 500 to the max or until the sinker drops slowly. That's already damaging the bushings. Adjust so that you have just a tiny bit of sideways play in the spool, you should hear a slight knocking sound when you try move the spool side to side.

thanks for the video. I just bought an old Jigmaster 500. Looks like it will take some getting used to. Looks like you stop the cast just short to prevent nesting the spool. I guess that means the reel is ideal for a lure set up, but not so good for bottom trolling with bait. Maybe the 113 or 114 is better for a live bait set up.
@akocbombie
@akocbombie 6 жыл бұрын
Sitting Lynx : true. Its a heavy spool + the centrifugal force is to much for the magnet. Thats you i also use my thumb to assist the spool to slow down. Penn 500 is tooooo big and to heavy for lure casting. If you want to cast lures on a big reel then try the saltist 30 or any new jigging reel. Lighter, more drag and smaller in diameter. But... whatever floats your boat. My big reels are dor showoff at the beach or pier when “expects” will comment that why im using a boat reel on the beach/pier

+akocbombie :) I'm learning. If I can get the hang of casting it with a slip rig and mullet w/o throwing off my bait or nesting my line, I'll be thrilled. My interest in this reel started with buying a vintage rod to hang with my older brother who vacations solely to fish. My family is younger than his so (on a single income) money is more of a factor for me. Last vacation he went out with a modern set up worth a few hundred and a caught a 22" red drum on a rod and reel I paid $30 for, lol.

Very very lightly rest your thumb on the spool ALL THE TIME and, as the spool slows down a bit before the sinker hits the water, thumb the spool just a little harder. When the sinker hits the water, instantly clamp that thumb down hard on the spool, stopping it from feeding out any more line.

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

Thumb control. Your worst enemy in casting practice is your own pride. During weekdays when you have time. Go to local beach/field and start with skow cast just to get control of the reel and your thumb. It takes lots of practice and MILES OF BIRDS NEST. Buy cheap lines st walmart for practice
