Don't forget to tool harden the edge of the spear. (Hammering the edge with a ballpeen hammer) Bronze is a hard alloy, but tool hardening it will make it even more durable.

Just like @TheMagicWorker said, it reduces voids in the casting, but the way it does that is by letting air escape the mold. The air inside the casting that is being replaced by the molten bronze has to go somewhere, and the little passage ways allow air to escape.

Doing something with your hands from scratch to the final product is such a great feeling...I USED TO MAKE FRUIT BOWLS ON THE LAITH...WHEN YOU MIX DIFFERENT WOOD, CUT AND REARRANGE IT BACK TOGETHER, YOUR FINAL DESIGN IS UNKNOWN UNTIL YOU COMPLETE THE WOOD CARVING, THEN GOING THROUGH 30 DIFFERENT GRADE SANDPAPER AND FINALLY THE WAX FINNISH...EACH BOWL IS A 1 OFF...BECAUSE OF DIFFERENT GRAIN AND HARDWOOD TO ASHWOOD...JUST WAITING TO GET TO THE FINNISHING UP , SAY LAST 3 GRADE SANDPAPER AND THEN THE WAX...THE FINNISH ON THIS SPEAR US WORTH WAITING FOR...BEAUTIFUL PEICE, JUST LIKE THE COPPER ARROW HEAD YOU MADE...GREAT CRAFTSMANSHIP..UNLIMITED BY YOUR IMAGINATION....
