Most people know the story ofJesus' dramatic visit to the Temple in Jerusalem, where he overturns the tables of the money changers and throws out the people selling cattle, sheep and doves. He also accuses the people of turning his Father's house into a marketplace. What does Jesus mean by this accusation? What does this have to say about what's wrong with the way we, as twenty-first century Christians, worship?
John 2:13-22
13 The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” 18 The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking of the temple of his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Hi. I'm a scientific Theist, and the problem for me with Jesus' actions is they clearly show his "God the Father" is more concerned with bricks and mortar rather than people, and "Love your enemy" is nowhere to be seen. Of course what the Pharisees allowed was not ideal, but what church is perfect? The church was made for man, not man for the church. Cheers, P.R.

great analogy of the freedom Jesus has in the temple. I really like that. I never heard the analogy of Jesus being the Temple - that He is the Temple in which people will worship God. Good point. The question is challenging - I like how you put it. Also I had done some research on the selling and exchange of money - the priests took a percentage of the profits, and the money exchange was also changing Roman coin for Temple coin. So the real question is sence the body is the temple who are the money changers or babelon buying and selling the souls of men that we need to punish and remove from our souls and body's(tempel)
