Cast Iron Dutch Oven Restoration is a video where I show the method that I use to remove rust from cast iron cookware in order to restore it for use again. I use a vinegar spray solution to save on the vinegar usage I go through the steps that you need to take to keep from damaging the cast iron cookware. You will also get to see the finished product after three rounds of seasoning has been applied.

Long video but so very helpful. I had a brand new Martha Stewart cast iron grill pan but it got rusty. But I threw it away because I thought it was ruined. I needed to see this video 5 year ago. Crying real tears. 😭 Now I understand why my dad went crazy when my mom threw away his rusty cast iron skillet.

You did the best job I've ever seen removing the rust from cast iron. I have this type pot that my mother use to call her baked bean pot. She stopped using it back in the early 70s when new fancy cookware came along. The old bean pot was put in my father's barn where he used it for dipping horse feed. The pot then got thrown into an unfloored room in the barn where it stayed for the last 48 years almost. It is rusted brown now. I'm gonna use your way of cleaning up the old bean pot. Thank you so much for doing this video.

@@castIroncookware Both my folks would be glad to see me clean up the old bean pot...and thanks to you I can do that now! My mother cooked much food in cast iron pots and skillets. Not just beans but biscuits, cornbread, muffins shaped like ears of corn and regular muffins, cakes, even pies and cobblers in the huge skillets along with fried chicken, pork chops, then gravy from the drippings and such. I still have her other cast iron stuff which lasts forever. ...You do a real good channel. Thank you.

@@mrsrowe11 i recommend that you wipe off what you can immediately. If it is stuck on, warm an inch or two of water for a few minutes and then the stuck on stuff should wipe out. If need be use a stainless steel scrubber.
@castIroncookware
@castIroncookware 4 жыл бұрын
@@mrsrowe11 the sooner after you use it easier it is to clean. On especially hard to get off crust from cooking, you can fill the pan halfway full of water and feed it to almost a boil. Turn off the stove and let it sit for a little bit. Once it gets cold enough to handle the burnt on food will usually come right off with a scrubby and a little bit of dish soap.

SOS pad is my “go to” . Generally I never actually “ wash” my cast iron pots and pans, I just wipe them out, because they’re so well seasoned they don’t require a lot of upkeep . Iron is pretty tough. Although I find my ridged pans ( they’re like a grill and leave grill marks when cooking steak etc) are a bit more problematic, so I think your method is superior…and will use the 50-50 vinegar and water solution…

@castIroncookware
@castIroncookware 4 жыл бұрын
When a piece becomes sticky and gummy, that is actually oils that have not yet polymerized and became Rancid . You can give them a really good scrubbing with dish soap and water. Afterwards, without applying any oil, bake it in the oven for 1 hour at 500 degrees. That will completely solidify any oils that have not yet been polymerized.

@@castIroncookware thanks for the reply. I should have said I put too much oil on before baking them at high heat and that is what made them gummy. I saw that you rubbed oil in with cloth, I used my hands. It was too thick and didn't come out smooth and dry like yours did. I will scrub the pots and try it again like you said.

I have a dutch oven exactly like the one in your video. I found it at a thrift store 2 years ago. I didn’t know if it was actually a dutch oven because it’s so old. Your video confirmed. Mine was in excellent condition when I purchased. It had no rust. It had and is still well cared for. I have used it for searing roast and for cabbage on the stove top with it. It cooks great. I’ve never seasoned it, but will now. Mine is silver in color. I hope that it gets darker after seasoning. Thank you for this presentation.😊

Oh where were you when I was restoring our 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove??? It had sat in a cabin next to our dairy barn for decades and the roof leaked! The cooking surface was a rusty mess. We moved it to the house barn and it was my project. I did not want to sand blast or use chemicals. I opted for some extreme measures in my book, but I was desperate. I soaked the surface with coke, then wiped it off, followed by olive oil and fine steel wool and lots of rags. And worked my way over the stove. We set the stove in the yard and lit a fire. It smelled like an Italian restaurant :-) She has graced our kitchen now since 2016 and looks new. No stove blacking was used. ~ Diane

Warning ⚠️ don't do what I did. My wife's mother had cast iron skillets. Now one of them was very dirty so I thought. Well me being a great and thoughtful son in-law wanted to make it shine like a new penny. Well I proudly took it and showed it to her. Ok now let be tell you somethings. I didn't know how many shades of red that 80 year old woman turn, but I new that I shouldn't be standing in that spot any longer. At the time I didn't know about seasoning and all that. But I learned quick not to clean her skillets.....ever. The purpose of this story is don't mess with mother stuff.

We in south India apply cooking oil after washing it every time, just a 1/4 teaspoon and spread it nicely and keep it. It never rusts this way and over time becomes nonstick. This is a traditional method we use, hundreds of years

Add some cooking oil while it is still wet. The oil will displace the water and allow it to be dried without flash rust from happening.

Great video, learn a lot, I have a couple of fryers in different sizes and a Dutch oven. Great learning video. I keep my Lodge skittles and Dutch oven well season. I use canola oil to season them. Didn't know that you were to install them in the oven for 1 hr at 500 degrees. Good to known I was placing them on top burners. It works also, but I like the idea in placing them in the oven, its a heating source.

In the oven you can get an even seasoning over the entire piece. Of course stove-top seasoning will best simulate actual cooking and actual cooking is the best seasoning.

I put my skillets and other containers in oven on clean cycle. That takes off all the built up grease. It will come out with a fine coat of rust, I spray with canola oil and use a paper towel to remove rust. Look like new After I use them, when still warm, wipe out with spray canola oil.

They may be salvageable but there is a good chance that there may be some heat damage. A sign to look for is that heat damaged pieces will have a red or pinkish hue. Not a rust red but a pinkish red. If they are heat damages, they will not take seasoning. Sometimes the only way to be sure is to try seasoning them. I hope that they turn out for you.
