shytende aka Tamanoir I’ll admit that I did look a fair bit into pairings so I’m not at all blind on that front (I knew a few things about this game beforehand). Midir/Aideen Lex/Ayra Holyn/Bridget Finn/Sylvia Erin/Lewyn Azel/Tailtiu Lachesis/Beowulf Sylvia and Finn literally got lover status on like turn 40 something of chapter 3 it was close lmao. It’s been fun strategizing around like- positioning my units so they get romance points each turn, especially with the crazy fe4 quad dancer thing.

One of my favorite things to do in the arena is, if a unit seems like they can absolutely win the next fight, but for some reason (RNG) they lose, I can keep throwing them in at 1 HP, forcing RNG to conform to my needs, until they eventually dodge every attack and secure the win, netting them a gorgeous full HP bar! So satisfying. So... naughty.

I always end up giving him the slim sword from chapter 1 instead of the steel sword. I find it works better on a speed-based build like Alec to have a lighter weapon like that. Noish gets the iron lance because it's not like he's going to be doubling anyway, so he might as well have more versatility.
@dr.worried5466

@@Chaosdude7111 I actually love Alec in the first gen of FE4. His reliably good speed growth plus pursuit gives him a lot of benefit in stacking kills onto a weapon (usually a slim sword for trading around in ranked runs). While Noishe/Naoise is quite good as a father and once the brave sword comes around, I do find that Alec is more reliable before either of those things come around, despite his notable difficulties in the strength department.

@@ChillstoneBlakeBlast Mmmm… passing items between lovers? Not sure about that. Most of couples won't have correlating weapon proficiency, and thus the only thing you pass around would be that ring, or band, whatever it's translated as. While lessening the strain of gold management, it would take away a good chunk of planning ahead. Without having to spend 40k each chapter, preparing items to pass off to offspring would be a breazer too.

As someone who only in the last 2 weeks started playing FE4, and having already reset after getting to Chapter 7 and realizing I wanted to do things differently with a much better understanding of the game, It's really cool to see a video like this that's explaining mechanics I discovered myself. Plus helping me out with some strategy and mechanic abuse is never unwelcome. The Arena is probably my favorite part of FE4's baseline mechanics simply because of how it functions as an indicator. If you can't do well in the Arena against a certain enemy, you know you need to watch for those specific enemy types, but if you absolutely dominate an enemy, you know you can deal with them with little effort. Thanks for spreading the good word of FE4 Chaz! You're what finally made me decide to play it when I stumbled across an old video of yours. It's become up there as my currently 2nd favorite but could very easily become my favorite FE game with just 1 more insanely fun to use unit which I imagine I will get in Ares.

This was a short but sweet video detailing basically all you need to know about the arena, castle item management and it’s underling and useful mechanics. I’m hopeful that people will be able to take advantage of the arena and it’s extreme usefulness with help from this guide. Something small to his credit that Chaz didn’t mention is that he ended up beating the entire first generation without the arena so you really shouldn’t worry too much about being unable to clear it with every unit. Don’t forget as well that other units you recruit during a chapter can still utilize the arena, the return staff helps get those units back to the castle and does wonders to save you time. Remember, because you can save at the start of every turn, you can kinda save scum a bit with multiple arena units after their recruitment if you want (a.k.a you can take a chance and not do the arena with a few units until the chapter’s end or at the point where you have new recruits and try save scumming to get through with the more recent units if you want). Also important to note, when units visit a captured castle (not the starting castle) they can make use of the rest of their movement like canto. If you visit (enter command) from outside the main castle (starting castle) your units turn will end, bear in mind that if you use the return staff to send a unit home and the sent unit hasn’t used their turn, they will be able to interact with the castle’s utilities and move out of it on the same turn. Just a few more tips for ya if you really want them. Great video as usual Chaz!

You forgot the 5th way to earn gold: Have your thief or your thief sword hit the enemy. The enemy got hit by those will have all their gold transferred into the attacker's gold pocket. This is also the only way to get 100% gold from villages. Because each time the bandit burn the village down, he takes away 500 gold from that village. Steal his gold and you will have all what he take.
@user-un-known

Bandit doesn't take gold from village. Each bandit and pirate carry 5,000 gold on them by default. Precisely the reason why chapter 3 is a gold mine, and pivotal in ranked runs.

I made a comment several weeks ago about how this guide helped me in my first playthrough. Well, I just finished a 2nd playthrough of the game, and it’s MUCH better on repeat playthroughs due to foreknowledge. As a result, I can safely say that FE4 is now my 3rd-favorite FE game behind PoR & RD. I did all new pairings in my 2nd playthrough, and it made the gameplay of Gen 2 so different and refreshing. While my 1st playthrough involved the conventional popular pairings and produced the expected Lewyn!Ced with Forseti, my 2nd playthrough had highlights such as Lewyn!Arthur (with Forseti on a horse) and Lex!Patty (the tankiest thief ever). I even learned how Miracle works, so arena-cheesing became much easier to manipulate for Silvia/Lene & Lachesis/Nanna. Once again, thank you for this guide as FE4 has many fun mechanics to exploit/min-max. On another note, I’m also impressed that the story held up well upon scrutiny. People talk about Gen 2 not being as complex as Gen 1, but I actually like Gen 2’s story since it’s surprisingly competent. The characters’ actions all make sense, and it thankfully doesn’t rely on tired tropes or people acting stupid for the plot (which happens a lot in other FE games).

The castle and arena system is a really great mechanic in FE4. You can spend so much time preparing without the turn running out. Arena gives money and exp to buy those items you want, so it's part of this feedback loop that really can't be changed without changing the whole system.

And I'm only at chapter 3 (granted, I have already been spoiled on a certain event) Chapter 2 was rough though, with Raquesis' simp brigade to protect and villages to rush to. About a year ago, I tried playing FE4 blind, but I got absolutely bodied by the game’s unique mechanics and ended up dropping the game around Chapter 2. During that time, I played other FE games, but knowing the glowing praise this game has received, I felt obligated to give the game another chance one day. Fast-forward to June 2021, and I decided to start fresh and try the game again with a different mindset. Instead of treating this like a typical FE game where each map is a singular puzzle meant to be completed in one sitting, I treated the game more like an arena-sim RPG marathon. I compare each map to an RPG overworld where you save and prepare between the different skirmishes you encounter. With inventory management and preparation being a major part of the game, I watched your guides multiple times to understand the Home Castle’s mechanics better. I’ll be honest when I say I arena-abused the hell out of my team in Chapters 1 & 2 to finally get past the infamous Chapter 2. I also looked up the secret events like Lex’s Brave Axe and Arden’s Pursuit Ring. Anyways, once I got to Chapter 3 (which was new territory for me), the game’s positive qualities really started to shine. I engaged in Paragon Ring trading strats to promote most of my team, and I really liked the design of Chapter 3’s pirate arc (where the map structure felt more like traditional FE). Gen 2 genuinely surprised me with how fun it was. I did the conventional pairings of Midir-Edain, Lex-Ayra, Beowolf-Lachesis, Lewyn-Erinys, Azelle-Tailtiu, & Dew-Brigid, and I accidentally paired Silvia with Alec. The kids were absolutely busted and fun to play with, so even in Chapter 6, I enjoyed training them since they get 4-5 stats per level-up on average. Ares with Mystletainn was incredibly fun as a Res-tank Crit machine, Master Knight Leif with Light Brand became my physical tank, and Forseti Ced became my boss-killer due his 100+ Avo. I eventually finished the game by August, and I want to thank you for putting this guide out there. FE4 is a game whose qualities shine more with foreknowledge, but considering it was a ‘90s game, it lacked many features that usually help blind players such as in-game tutorials. Without this guide, I wouldn’t have ever figured out tactics like trading low-durability weapons to save money and cheese the arena. Now that I’ve had a month to sit on the game, FE4 has grown to be one of my higher-ranked FE games. I’d still rank both Tellius games ahead of FE4 for sure, but I now love the world of Jugdral. If I ever replay the game again, a lot of my early gripes won’t become a problem anymore now that I know I can beat the game. Thanks, dude.

@Mr96POP
@Mr96POP 3 жыл бұрын
@@Choops6969 Yeah, exploiting the arena is actually a major highlight for me. Personally, FE4 is growing on me the way _Xenoblade Chronicles 2_ & _Final Fantasy VIII_ did for me over time. Both of those games were ones with unique mechanics that aren’t necessarily that intuitive at first glance, but once you figure out how to exploit them, you have an amazing time. Funny enough, I actually started a 2nd playthrough of FE4 about 7 hours ago just to see if my current feelings on the game were genuine. Well, I’m about 2/3 of the way done with Chapter 1, and I’m having a blast now that I’m familiar with the whole game! Chapter 1 was a grind during my 1st playthrough, but now that I know what to expect, I’m blazing through Verdane. I felt particularly clever when I burned RNs by having Azelle intentionally lose to the Myrmidon in the arena (thus allowing me to give extra levels to the others). Even with all the tips you gave, I still find joy in figuring out new arena strategies. During my first playthrough, I really enjoyed trading around the Paragon Ring for the arena (starting in Chapter 3) because it was a strat I discovered on my own. Arena earnings total 17,500G per chapter, so it’s actually very cost-efficient to trade around the Paragon Ring since buying it (-40,000G), clearing the arena (+17,500G), and selling the ring (+20,000G) results in double EXP all for a small cost of 2,500G (not counting weapon repair costs). This particular playthrough will probably be an on-and-off thing (since that 1st playthrough was a major time investment), but even so, theory-crafting new pairings is fun. While pairings in the later games gave you child units through optional paralogues, the pairings in FE4 fundamentally change the gameplay of the entire 2nd half, thus creating lots of variety in each playthrough. It’s much better than my experience with FE6 this year where I have no real interest in doing a 2nd playthrough (with FE6’s gameplay being much less versatile).

I still didn't finish this game yet. But took me 3 years to beat echoes, and just finally beat that 9 days ago I just work alot. Thanks for all these holy war vids. I'm on the second chapter of gen 2 and only now realizing that trading weapons for the arena might be a good idea... Instead of, ya know, letting Sigurd end Gen 1 with more weapons and fancy jewelry than he knew what to do with because selling things when he was at the gold cap gave me frugal anxiety.

Its worth mentioning that if an arena battle goes on for too long it will run out of RN’s and start burning level up RN’s. So if a unit is about to level up, end the fight and restart it right before the last hit. If you dont units will likely get terrible level ups. Even Sigurd who has over 100% hp growth can get a blank level upw

Thanks for making this video! FE 3 Houses was my introduction and these guides have convinced me to play Genealogy! I'm surprised how similar the two games are. I'm curious to see the difficulty ramp. I thought 3H was pretty difficult (finished Hard Classic VW and Maddening Classic Regular No New Game Plus AM) but then again I'm new to the series. I have a feeling this game is going to be alot harder haha.

Really enjoy all your videos, Chaz. I wish I had these back when I was playing FE4 last summer xD but it's ok I made it through and Genealogy became my favorite FE game too. I actually have a question for ya tho. Idk if this is necessarily a video worthy topic but I'd like to know your thoughts on the FE4 saving process vs things like Mila's turnwheel or Divine pulse. If you can save at the start of any turn, with multiple files available to restart back to when something goes wrong, then how is this mechanic better or worse than the option to rewind turns via Divine pulse? Personally I loved having the ability to save every turn and potentially restart a turn again (especially since I was playing the game semi blind and didn't know much about seizing castles when I played, or how they trigger certain events when I wasn't ready yet to proceed etc). But I've heard people diss Divine pulse and Mila's turnwheel as being too cheap. Why is the saving at the start of every turn mechanic necessarily viewed upon more favorably by those who dislike the turnwheel mechanic? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

@@Choops6969 Very interesting video! Personally my favorite mechanic was FE4 saves (but as you said, it highly encourages save scum) and the SD + NM saves on the map (limited uses but require careful planning). Now that Three Houses has been released and I've played it so many times, the entire game was built around semi cheap mechanics which is why Divine pulse was necessary. I've played maddening mode twice and I don't think I would have survived with my sanity without Divine pulse having 10+ charges. Ambush spawns aren't fun. But obviously maddening mode isn't balanced at all so that's kinda the fault of the mode itself. Honestly I think a good in between solution is what they did with the sword of the creator: you can rest to restore a few durability uses. But NOT the full durability; you'd still need umbral steel to restore the full durability back. Rest is a mechanic that forces you to pick between weekly activity: rest, explore, battle and seminar. Most players won't rest at the beginning of the month or the 2nd week (usually they explore once and battle the next week). But they might be willing to rest on week 3 or 4 if the sword of the creator is low on durability and they need a few more uses. That's a finite resource and it forces you to choose between resources (waste a potential week resting) but it also helps with refreshing motivation of students too. So if that mechanic would have restored Divine pulse charges in the same way, it would be perfect for those who want to limit uses. That way casual players can fully recharge pulse by spending precious forging material (which is also resource management) and experienced veterans can have the limited pulse charges per map if they aren't willing to waste a weekly activity resting.

If this game ever gets a remake, they should balance the Arena. The Arena's only used for units that need to play catch-up in terms of levels. And yeah, if you know what you're doing, you'll fly through the arena matches no sweat. This is from my own experience especially with my YT playthrough of FE4.

I'm playing through fe4 for the first time and I find I have a hard time letting go when units (namely silvia and dew) can't quite get through an arena level. Granted, I just beat chapter 4, everybody is promoted and married, I got the shield sword, and since I'm aware of the impending doom, I may finally be able to relax a bit for ch5 (apart from worrying about not having enough gold to rebuy certain rings before its too late)

since the Arena always leaves you with 1 hp if you lose you can continue to enter and fight until you get favourable RNG. especially useful for units with the Miracle skill as they are granted higher evasion at low HP

Well, you can also burn RNG by designating a unit sentenced to lose (since winning is too unlikely) and be sourse of healer exp and re-entering arena on 1HP after your powerful units complete the arena. Sure, it wastes more money than burning RNG on successful rounds (since you waste weapon durability) but can be good if we really want to push f.e. axe unit over an arena myrmidon, knowing he's hampered by weapon triangle and will breeze by other arena opponents.
