This guy is so amazing if you really listen to his phrasing and in keeping a steady pulse and speed up time and slow it down by just changing the different subdivisions. His playing is a great Drum lesson in its self . Also a great music lesson be he composed and wrote the music also . What a gift this man is to all musicans . Thank you Virgil

hardly anyone on earth that commits to an art form that sacrifices so much in life. This is all he does...and yoga. That is humbling.

This was uploaded at 5am Monday morning in my time zone. Usually Monday mornings are a drag, I watch news and sports updates but not this one, I watched drums. Drums make Monday morning better. Bacon with breakfast will make this Monday morning more better, betterer. But for real, those were some pretty amazing drum skills, I'm wide awake now.

I first saw Virgil in early 80s and I was astonished, mesmerised and crushed all at once. His ability and fluid playing could not be denied. After a while however it became boring. He totally overplayed in every song. This odd time thing was his solo obsession. It sounds impossible to replicate only because you are hearing something built on decades of practice. It's like a party trick, but will never apoear in a hit song. It has no place in music. You have to find some musicians to make appropriate noise to fit in with it. Music, like wine, requires taste and sweetness with broad appeal to most pallets. It should flow smoothly down the throat. I want to listen and relax without my brain running into overdrive calculating where lies the up beat or next bar is due.
@dovahsenbrom8363 жыл бұрын
@@ekaram63 what amazed me in this performance was that you always feel a steady pulse. extremely consistent throughout the music. Maybe it sounds like gibberish and overdrives you because you gotta practice more rhythm ^^'
@ekaram633 жыл бұрын
@@dovahsenbrom836 complexity does not always translate into something beautiful. This is the best way I can describe. I do not argue the rhythmic precision or flow.
@dovahsenbrom8363 жыл бұрын
@@ekaram63 I agree, but "beautiful" is subjective. Plus it doesn't have to be beautiful all the time. Personally I find this type of stuff inspiring in its own right
@robotpirateisland34303 жыл бұрын
@@ekaram63 I understand where you’re coming from, but music isn’t supposed to be anything in particular, it’s a form of expression. Virgil is being honest here. If you don’t like it, then find something simpler and less challenging to understand. There is room in the this world for more than one interpretation of music. No need to suggest that every musician ought to conform to your expectations, that’s just ridiculous.
