Sounds to me as though it just needed bedding in. The extra leverage giving it what was required.

Interesting Colin, but I don’t think the barrel diameter would make any difference because winding to the max would have the same effect. Likewise making new wheels and pinions was probably not the answer if they were free running before. If you haven’t already done so make sure all the pivots are running free, if that’s ok what about changing the length of the suspension spring, I would make it shorter but you would then have to lengthen the pendulum. The clock did sound in beat so it’s probably not that. Good luck.

When you are desperate you try anything! I’ve tried a shorter spring, lighter weight on the pendulum but this clock is known for this problem. I’ve been in touch with others. It’s not that I lack experience, I’ve made seven clocks in all, some to my own design.

@@colinmaceke7474 I wasn’t questioning your knowledge I know you fully understand clocks i was just coming up with suggestions,I too would like to know what the problem was. I hope you find a solution and if so please post the results.

If a clock goes for 3, 4, 5 days then it should work all the time. It only needs a speck of dirt but it has been through the ultrasonic cleaner. By the way, the advantage of increasing the diameter of the drum is like adding weight without increasing the friction. Thanks for the Good luck.

@@colinmaceke7474 yes I agree with the diameter of the drum I got mixed up with a spring, yours is weight driven.

Having looked through your trials and tribulations I respectfully don't think your problem is with the gear train. During this video you show a side view which partly shows the escapement. Although not the best view, I think there is too much drop in the escapement action. Drop is the amount of free travel of the escape wheel after being released by the entry pallet, and conact with the exit pallet, and vice versa. This amounts to wasted energy, which should be being used to impulse the pendulum. Also there doesn't appear to be much recoil of the escape wheel. It may be possible to lower the pallets if the drop is too much on to the entry pallet, or close (bend) the pallets if there is too much drop on to the exit pallet. In the worst case it may be necessary to remake the pallets. I should add that I have made this clock and it works reliably! Alan Swainston

You’re no doubt right as I realised this. The clock has been going ever since the video.

Can I ask whom you purchased your wheel cutters from?
