Mickey Mania is also amazing. The fact they achieved probably the most hardware-pushing game for the Mega Drive with Mickey Mania, but it doesn't just look good, it plays really well. The lead developer of Mickey Mania has two channels, Game Hut and Coding Secrets, where he explains how he achieved these insanely cool effects on games he developed. Like how he managed to get full motion video for Sonic 3D Blast with just a regular bog standard cartridge and no mega drive hardware add ons like the sega CD. He's like a savant level coder, he just invented so much stuff Definitely check out those channels of his. And play Mickey Mania if you haven't already. I do prefer Castle of Illusion for nostalgia reasons, and the fact the music is some of the best video game music of all time. But Mickey Mania is a whole lot of fun

I remember Castle of Illusion being massively hyped in gaming magazines back in the day. EGM was saying how it looked and animated just like the cartoon, and that the graphics were some of the best they'd ever seen. It was legitimately one of those "next gen" games that really showed off the hardware. It was one of the stand out games of 1990, even getting some "Game of the Year" awards. Today, it looks so simple in comparison to incredible titles like Cuphead, but I still remember being blown away by Castle of Illusion when I rented it. Compared to the NES, it really was cutting edge back in 1990.
@texturem0nkey3 жыл бұрын
This was my experience as well. The game didn't really register as a blip on my radar ("oh another Mickey Mouse game, I remember the below-average NES one, yawn") and out of nowhere EGM gives it ALL 9's??? It went immediately from who cares to I must own this! And I did and it totally delivered! Right after Ghouls this became my new favorite platformer.. at least until Sonic showed up another year or so later!

"A bit more of a challenge" is a huge understatement! The bats- oh god the bats! Took me about 30 tries over the course of a month to finally beat it blind. But the game is so well designed and plays so tight that it never felt unfair and kept me coming back!

Not the audio... Why does the volume have to go up when he's showing off game audio? Can't it just be the same level as his voice?! 🤔
@TheCrazyStudent3 жыл бұрын
@@youtubearethenazis608 This is called audio ducking, and it’s very common in video editing. If the background music were to be as loud as his voice, then the background music would partially drown the narration and it would be difficult to hear what he’s saying. Therefore the background music is lowered in volume during parts of narration. However, when there is no narration, then the overall volume would be a bit too low if the background music stayed at the same level as before. The music (game sound) channel is therefore brought up in volume a bit during periods of no narration. Since there is no narration at this point in time, the music channel will not drown the narration so it’s safe to bring it up a bit. Lowering the background music during narration also puts more focus on the speech, which is what the viewer should be focusing on during those parts of the video. When there is no narration however, the focus can be brought back to the sound coming from the game itself. This is a very common thing among video editors. You can especially see it implemented very often on videos that are doing reviews on video/computer games and movies. Sega Lord X has properly implemented audio ducking in his videos. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, it only adds to the professionalism of the video editing.

This was one of my all-time favorite games for the Genesis. Well as far as side scrolling adventure games goes. As I've said before I was a HUGE EA and Sega Sports game fan, as well as or especially a MAJOR fan of the 2K series. But I also loved the 2D side scrollers. Not just on the Sega Genesis, but all systems. I especially loved the game Bonk's Adventure on the TurboGraphx-16. But Castle of Illusion was easily one of the best side scrolling adventure games on the Genesis, hands down. The graphics are spot on perfection, incredible sound quality, and the controls are excellent. All in all it's a 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐game. Out of 100, I'd give it a 95/100, maybe 97 or 98 even. I can remember when this came out. I rented it to just see what it was. I had seen a review in either EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly), or Gamepro. I'm not sure which magazine was out back then. But I used to grab whatever ones were on the newsstands. Again I was a huge diehard gamer, and back then the only way to get any news or information about new games was through these magazine, until the interwebs was available to everyone. I really enjoyed those days. Even the least technological gaming experience, the 70's. I had Pong, the Atari 2600, 5200, and later my Dad bought a 7800 at Toys R Us on a whim. All of these systems have a special place in my heart. Fond memories of playing Atari Boxing, Pitfall, Scramble, Adventure, and even E.T.! When Pac-Man looked like a goofy duck that ate wafers not dots. When Donkey Kong, OMG Donkey Kong? I can remember my buddy and I got to ride the city bus.🚏🚍🚌🚏🚍 We caught it on the corner on 27th Street. We took it about 2 miles north to 27th and Howard Avenue. That's where Toys R Us was. I had saved my allowances, my money from shoveling snow, and other odd chores and jobs that netted me💸💰🤑💲cash!💵💸💰🤑 For a kid walking into Toys R Us was ALWAYS euphoric! It was like a little slice of heaven for a kid. It's so sad that kids now won't be able to get the same experiences of the world's biggest toy store. Geoffrey was a amazing mascot and seeing him on the 📺TV📺, especially during Christmas season was pure happiness! Merry Christmas to everyone and have a wonderful New Year as well! God Bless you all.

One thing that amazes me on Sega games, is that in early Genesis/Mega-Drive era, when a game was a success and they wanted a sequel, instead of making just the same game again (think of Duck Tales 2 and Chip & Dale 2 in the NES) they just made it tottally different, like Fantasia and Strider 2. Yeeeeaaaaah, I'd say THIS one was easier to play, instead of those modern 3d ones? ... THIS cart is Notorious it is.

I picked this game up at a Goodwill for $4 CIB. I was super stoked. I love this game.
