Nice boxed set! Diversity & Dragons have switched from 5E to C&C and seem happy with their decision, as you’re probably aware. The hardback C&C books with the homage covers look super nice, almost enough for me to buy them, but I’m an OSE/BX guy at the end of the day.

I'm going all in on C&C, moving my players away from Pathfinder 1e. Sick of the bloat and semi-immortal PCs.

We have moved to C&C already and run a couple of games with it. Though Cantrips, 0 level spells, aren't unlimited use like 5e has. They use slots like in the classic game and you only get one use per day with cantrips.

@@TheBasicExpert they don't explain it as being separate in the PHB or the spell book either. But lump everything together as spells with no special rules for the 0 level spells, except that they take up a single page in a spall book. But nowhere in the PHB or any of their books that I have seen, allows unlimited Cantrip/0 Level spell us. Whereas 5e specifically states that they're unlimited use. In C&C all spells have the same rules applied to them for use. So, they don't declare that the 0 level spells are unlimited use, inferring that they follow all of the other same spell rules.

We have messed around with Cantrip rules in C&C. If you want wizards to have more utility with them let them use caster level+attribute bonus times per day. For example, a level 2 wizard with a 14 Intelligence can use 3 cantrips per day. A level 6 cleric with a 16 Wisdom can use 8 cantrips per day.

A note on monster HD size, that was something Gary talked about adding to his version of 2E. It also works very well with using the HD amount to affect the Challenge Base. If it was all d8, larger creatures would be more difficult to track, for example. Larger creatures can have high HP amounts, but characters can have a some what easier time affecting the monster. It lends itself to cinematic moments in a grounded reality.

Excellent video TBE. It's always great to C&C get some love. One thing about the Siege Engine is that you don't always add your level. If the fighter with a high Dex wants to pick a lock, he can try, but does not add his level. Usually, if a player wants to do something specific to another class, he doesn't add his level. Class HD always made me scratch my head between Basic and Advanced. Everyone got a bump on HD from Basic to 1E except wizards and monsters. I almost wonder if monsters should be 1d6 in Basic. It makes me wonder if that isn't the rogue class, but the thief class from The Adventurer's Backpack. Edited to add... Castle Keeper Guide gives other ways to do the math for the Siege Engine. C&C was first released in 2006 and is, to some, considered the start of the OSR. Stephen Chenault, the CEO and one of the authors, does not consider C&C an OSR game.

It really does have an updated but still the soul of old school feeling to it though. I forgot about the level thing. Eventually, I'll run C&C but it's in a long list of games to play haha.

Yeah it got me too, "That's not their slogan!"I'm not going to blame the writers, but the editors. There were simple errors that kept going through out the printings of the PHB. Everywhere else it's The Die is Cast.

Actually we all have the option of saying "this is what I'm running, you can take it or leave it". They can either play what you got, or start their own game. And if they just stop playing then they weren't a good player or a good friend. We have to address these toxic players head-on.

I've always seen C&C stuff but never actually read the main rules. It's modules are always on sale and you can pick up lots of it for free sometimes. I think I never got into it cause the books looked like they had too much text and were very hard to reference. I might finally get into it now

Does this use the most current version of C&C? The page is a little confusing... "NOTE: The first four volumes do not contain new material for the C&C RPG." If I recall, they just came out with a new version.

No this is the older version of C&C as far as I know.

I really wanted to play AD&D but they were not up for it. I wanted a bit more in the campaign that BFRPG offers. They were not up for AD&D so C&C is a good middle ground that has some AD&Disms but some simplicity too.
