Castles of King Edward I - Northwest Wales

First part of a collection of visits to some notable castles in the picturesque landscape of Northwest Wales. The castles were usually built close to the coast for easy supply purposes and upon prominent rocky outcrops giving panaramic views over the coastline. Smaller castles existed inland that were built by the Welsh Princes and subsequently taken over, decommisioned or expanded by King Edward I. Most castles in this area are maintained by CADW, the Welsh Historic Monuments Service and are well worth visiting.

In addition to the castles you show, this ring of iron of Edward I Royal castles also includes Flint, Conwy and Aberystwyth. Furthermore, the English stranglehold on the Welsh was further increased by his barons’ castles built at Holt, Chirk, Ruthin, Denbigh etc and strengthening of captured Welsh castles like Criccieth and Caergwrle. Truly a massive feat of mobilizing English resources and wealth.

I remember visiting Beaumaris approx 35-40 years ago and we saw a whopping eel in the moat. It was a massive specimen.
