Stage 5 of our challenge would see us reach 500 metres and 600 metres for the first time as terrain became more mountainous. Back in the beautiful village of Castleton, we headed for Man Tor (The shivering mountain). There was once a major road that ran through here, connecting Manchester to Sheffield. However, in the mid 1970s, a series of landslides would completely destroy the road and leave it abandoned. The remains are a great insight into how are roads are built with the layers of tarmac now visible. The thickness shows just how many times the road was relayed in attempts to keep it open. Once on the summit of Mam Tor we were greeted with views down the Hope valley to our southeast and North into Edale. Across from us loomed the massive expanse of Kinder Scout. A sharp descent to Edale and the Hamlet of Barber Booth led us to the beginning of Crowden Clough. A gentle walk along the river became a scramble along the river bed, culminating in an incredible scramble up a waterfall. This gave us access to the perimeter path on Kinder Scout. Following this past Crowden Tower and Pym Chair we reached the Summit of Kinder Low. This summit is lower than the true summit but far easier to reach. Continuing north and around Kinder Downfall before turning Northeast onto Mill Hill. Our first view of our destination raised energy levels as we ploughed on to Harry Hut before descending from the moorland into Glossop. Another fantastic stage as our time in Derbyshire draws to and end. The next Stage will see us taking on another of Derbyshire high peaks before crossing the border into West Yorkshire.
