Obviously a angel!🤔 We have a local character, and I mean character here near Welch. He was a heavy drinker and a expert flatfooter, who for years carried a piece of plywood in the back of his truck. He would throw it out just about anywhere he thought he could draw a few people and dance on it! He moved here in 1972 from the Castlewood area and his last name is Castle. US Steel had just opened the Pinnacle Creek mine in Wyoming County and that's what brought him. For years he had a old school bus turned motor home and on weekends he would head back to Russell County and the surrounding areas for every bluegrass show that came along! He's in his 80s now. Not doing a lot of flatfooting these days but still the character! Great video guys!

I loved this video before I took a little KZbin side road to watch the 49 Winchester video "Russell County Line." Now I love it even more. Thanks so much, Shane and Melody, for introducing us to Castlewood and to 49 Winchester. Talk about a win-win. It seems that Appalachia never runs out of gold. So much talent! It's cool to see the area. My grandfather's people moved to SWVA in the 1700s, starting with Castlewood's namesake Jacob Castle.

I remember the U.M.W.A. Strike. My granny was a widow of a miner and they were trying to take away the retirees and widows benefits away,which the news never reported on😡. Then the security guards got caught shooting and creating havoc and blaming the miners

I grew up a few houses down from the masons lodge and fort Gibson church. Played basketball there all my youth. The gentleman that lived in the house next to the church put that basketball goal there. His name was Paul King I do believe. So many memories growing up on that road. We had scout meetings in the basement area of the church, and if I close my eyes I can still remember the smell, and hear the bell ring every Sunday morning.

Fun fact about Romano's II. Back in 2008, we had a severe thunderstorm roll through and we ended up getting hit by a microburst (a strong downward stream of air that spreads out in every direction). The wind was so strong it pulled the roof right off of Pizza Town and sadly, the roof landed on top of a Mustang at the traffic light and a man's life ended and thus, Romano's II was born. I live in St. Paul and went to Castlewood all my life. Fun fact: My cousin owns the former Frosty Bossie. He builds racing motorcycles there.

Castlewood and Honaker were big rivals in sports back in late 70’s and 80’s. They always played each other around Halloween in football. One year we came to school and someone had painted tiger paw prints on our school doors the week leading up to the big game.

Enjoyed! Very beautiful area! I dated a woman from castlewood, many years ago . She grew up there, but had moved to north Carolina as an adult. I love old buildings too. That house at the doctor's office was beautiful...I like orange and black, orange and navy blue and of course orange and maroon ...go VT....orange and black, your high school colors , right melody?😉...I remember your beautiful high school football stadium and you in your cheerleading outfit...thanks guys....God bless....🙏❤

Isn't it neat to visit your old schools? I do just every time I travel through Dunbar, WV. My high school is now a middle school. When I visit, it sure brings back memories. Castlewood has a Shoe store called Shoe town . It sells brand shoes at reasonable prices . The owner has said people from Honaker and all over come to shop .

I remember Castlewood very well on my way to Wise and Clinch Valley College. I too got confused where Castlewood ended and St. Paul began which I believe is in Wise County.

So this is melody's home county??? Omg it's so so beautiful...🥺🥺🥺 Im from a prissy rich suburb full of self entitled people. I always felt my heart belonged elsewhere as a Muslim and Arab being brought up humble and grateful and KIND to people.. something my hometown lacks.. oh how beautiful this area is. Would u say the west side of Virginia is a lot like west Virginia? I read that somewhere that towards the east/right side of VA is more flat like Ohio. I'm sorry if I'm wrong. yes, this is Melody's home county. We did a video of her hometown of Honaker a few months ago. Yes, the southern part of West Virginia and the southwestern part of Virginia are extremely similar in culture, landscape, and economics. Eastern Virginia is much more urban and gets flatter and flatter the closer you get to Washington, D.C.

My dad when I was little, actually fought with a river rat! It would stand on its back legs and hiss! He had a broom at the time, trying to kill it, (he grabbed the first thing he could)! He said , one of us girls woke up and came through the house and he said, that big ass rat tried to come at which ever one it was that woke up! He said, when he seen that the broom wasn’t gonna kill it, he took his big size 12 foot and he stomped it!!! He wasn’t scared of nothing but the good Lord… Thank you guys for your history lessons…❤️

I’m glad you mentioned Barny Barnhart’s sons chiropractic office I worked with Barny at Bristol metals quite a few years and if you see Little old Barny ask him if he’s been whooped lately The first time I was in Honaker was in probably 1979 or 1980 I delivered an S 10 Chevrolet pick up truck from Luney Chevrolet in Kingsport Tennessee to that Chevrolet dealership another good one guys keep them coming

I think I remember working in Castlewood somehow we redid Schuler Mintons house it caught on fire and we redid the basement he had a big grocery store and was in front of a school I could hear the band playing on the football field he had a huge garden he let us take anything we wanted and also gave us lunch every day
