narender Singh in limited overs yes ms is the best he took less innings than gilly to surpass him in run scoring gilly used to open whereas ms had largely batted at 5 or 6 and there is a hell of a difference in confronting new ball which is hard and travels better than the old soft one

@@ravirathee6801 Well, on the other side, opening is a tougher job. The new ball swings and seams a lot and the best bowlers from the opposition will be bowling at you. I dont think MS was equipped with that sort of technique which is why he wasn't successful in Tests, specially overseas. His style suits more for 5 & 6 and thus was successful. Both Gilly & MS were best at their positions.

@@sandeepp7619 he was equally successful at the top as well in ODIs , if you remember how cricket used to be before t20s, it was difficult to score in later part of the innings and still is with the old ball . Whereas opening or even batting in test cricket is completely different aspect . He used to bat at number 7 in tests an average of 38.06 is not bad considering Ganguly has 42 and Ajinkya also has 42 .ms has batted 16 or 17 innings at number three in ODIs his average is 91+ , if that's not good, I don't know what is. And he has opened as well but very few times.

@@ravirathee6801 Agree with much of what you said but it was primarily in subcontinent pitches. Scored 183 against SL, bashed PAK coming at 3. But, the technique of opener in ODIs is exposed more in SENAW countries. I dont think MS had a technique that suits those conditions, which is why I referred to his test matches precisely overseas where there is always swing, seam or bounce. MS had his own technique, he mastered it and was apt for 5, 6 or 7 in ODIs. But I wouldn't put Dhoni ahead of Gilly in ODIs because they played different roles.

Because a lot of people don't give him credit for his defence and in ODIs you know you just have to bat cautiously at the start then you can cash in , that is what Rohit does exactly . At test level , I agree he struggled due to his technique, but in ODIs there is nothing that he couldn't do . And as far as comparison is concerned, I am not an expert . And I agree about your role playing part .at different positions .
