No joke about the puppies. They often find kill shelter pups (which means this saves both the puppy AND the cheetah) and pair them up with the cheetah kits. If they mesh well with supervised visits, they essentially live together for their lives. Cheetahs just don't DO well in enclosures because of how large their living spaces SHOULD be as opposed to what a zoo CAN give. The puppies give them a more sociable stable influence and help them stay calm. Which, great, it's adorable, saves the cat AND the dog but you do kinda have to wonder two things - 1st, how they came UP with the idea and 2nd, how many critters did they first pair up until they found a temperament match. Kittens can pair up with gorillas and dogs can pair up with cheetahs but....

In fairness, dogs are probably one of the first animals you’re going to try to pair up with, given their sociable and easily controlled nature.

@@amandajackson668 because I volunteered with wildlife rescue and rehab and have been in the room. I've had my hand up more animal backsides, shoveled more exotic shite and dealt with more nervous breakdowns with teeth than I really like thinking about. (Been clawed and bitten, but weirdly? Only scars I have are from a freaking HOUSECAT. A kitten at that. The wolf bite/gnaw? Not a sign of it. The freaking kitten? Bright white and visible and it's been 2 decades.) Is it common? No, not yet. But that also has to do with, hey, we're putting a PUPPY in with a freaking predator who can't see calm even with a telescope. Zoos and rehabs try EVERYTHING. How do you think Koko got her kitten? I'm no pro, and I don't think it would work with any bigger cats (the idea of it happening with a tiger or a lion? Shudder.) But yes. It happens.

@@Magpiebard putting dogs like sheep dogs or Labradors with young big cats that need to be taught boundaries is perfectly fine there's a process in which it must be conducted. Koko killed their kitten because they didn't understand how fragile they were not because they were a preditor it's like a giant human baby hitting a dog when they first meet one humans can sign to greater apes but Koko just wasn't taught how fragile the kitten was vs them.

Kiwi birds didn't actually shrink, their eggs just got big to out compete other baby kiwis. "Many threats = many small kids to increase the chance of survival, No threats = a big kid to win the competitions."

considering their nearest evolutionary relative is the elephant bird, yeah, they did
@ollypa7062
@ollypa7062 8 ай бұрын
@@adamskeans2515 That is a logical assumption, but no the Elephant bird and most of the living Palaeognathae grew individually from each outer. For example the ancestor to the Elephant bird flew to New Zealand and grew big before the Kiwi ancestor flew there. The Kiwis probably stayed small because it couldn't compete with the giant Elephant bird. I recommend that if you want to be correct you should look up the information before correcting someone rather than assume that your assumption is correct.
@adamskeans2515
@adamskeans2515 8 ай бұрын
@@ollypa7062 it's not that big of an assumption when you also consider that are proven to be genetically part of the ratite family, every member of which is gigantic, in bird standards except for the Kiwi, so even if they aren't directly descended from the elephant bird, they're entire family is huge instead of them. There's no other way to explain that then they got smaller, a LOT smaller than their ancestors.
@ollypa7062
@ollypa7062 8 ай бұрын
@@adamskeans2515 When people talk about the ''Ratite'' family they go by old definition where they are the sister group Tinamiformes, but newer (2010) studies places the 46 species of flying Tinamous as the closes living relative of the Moa. As well as the closes living relative of Casuariiformes (Cassowaries and Emus). Making it most likely that all Ostrich-like bird convergently evolved to giant flightless birds. That would also explain how they got to so many places like New Zealand, Madagascar... oh I confused the Elephant birds and Moas places in my previous coment. Corection *The Moa was already a giant when the Kiwi got there and both of them most likely flew to get to get there, since the Kiwi and elephant bird are ''closely'' related but lived on the opposite side of the world on two isolated island, the Kiwi at that time could only have goten to NZ by flying. Same for the Moas, it couldn't have goten there without flying, as well as its closes relative can fly.

Also about the cheetah: their cubs look similar to the kids of a honey badger, and no animal will dare to try something with a honey badger, so by looking like that the cubs are safer

It's not a joke at all, and as proof, here's a video of a cheetah cub from my home-zoo meeting his puppy for the first time! kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2XYl3xvqtycjsU Also, fun fact, the cheetah's closest relatives are the cougar and the jaguarundi, which are both American animals! I've honestly wondered if we might be able to widen the genetic bottleneck and solve the cheetah's inbreeding problem through a bit of controlled crossbreeding...

I love watching people react to any NZ bird especially the kiwi because the horrific reality of this bird’s existence is something locals will learn about really young before we can actually properly empathize with exactly how horrifying the bird to egg ratio is
