Second day, they shouldn't have been out for at least 4hrs, but I turned my back and some other idiot let them into the enclosure, they had my tools and a tub of paint, that I was using to freshen up their pen... One chimp doused himself in the paint 😬 I got fired because of it...... Impo, not my fault.... I'm just glad the chimp was ok.

Can't testify to anything more than a few insect bites and a few dog bites over the years. But one thing I did learn from Dr. Pol is that you do not want to get bit by a rabbit or a beaver. Talk about self-sharpening teeth. Frankly any animal I'd prefer to avoid being bitten but some are much worse than others. Not just the bite damaging tissue but what comes with that bite. Toxins, bacteria, germs and other nasty little buggies that we don't tolerate well.

Zoos once played an important part in conservation just by allowing the general public to see these amazing animals, and the idea was that they might care more about preserving them. However it's the 21st century. You can click a video on KZbin and see animals in their natural environment. I think this is more effective because it makes you think about how preserving the animals is largely about saving their habits. tl/dr: We don't need zoos.

0:48 I do pet sitting on the side and have dealt with two separate skunkings on doggos in the past month. Tomatoe juice is a myth. The best home remedy I have found that works so well. 3/4 cup baking soda (1) 32oz bottle of hydrogen peroxide 1-2 teaspoons of dawn dish soap. This creates a slurry, apply the slurry to sprayed areas. Don't not use any water before applying the slurry. Be very careful to avoid eyes and ears. Let sit for 5 minutes. Then rinse. the longer the skunk spray sits the more difficult it is to remove so a second or even third application of the slurry may be needed, but I have never had to do more than one application. I carry these ingredient with me whenever I pet sit just incase. Also getting wet may make the smell return very slightly but that normal and will fade quickly. (edit for typos and a little bit more info)

A couple of thoughts: Having worked security at a zoo, a long time ago, I can attest to the fact that big cats have the same manner, thinking, and disposition as house cats. The problem is, the average pet owner knows how much blood loss is involved with keeping the typical house cat. Now magnify that by a factor of several hundred, and you'll understand what you're risking by scratching a tiger under the chin. ...even if it LIKES you. I can also tell you that hearing a full grown lion roar at midnight, when you're on foot patrol, in unfamiliar surroundings, will make parts of your anatomy shrink or tighten up in ways you didn't know possible. ... especially when that large male lion is less than 100 yards away, and all that stands between you and it is a silly chain link fence... that it has been known to get past.

The book is named The Overloaded Ark by Gerald Durrell, and tells the story of what you were talking about of how zoos collected those animals, and the level of care often put into their collection... and then contrast it with the effort the zoos put into their collections health. After working for over a decade in the rainforest as a teacher, I have seen both sides... but where we are at this point is not a great answer, I do agree.

Never been sprayed by a skunk personally but did run over one and the underside of my car took a direct spray. Don't know the condition of the skunk; it was dark and it would not be in a good mood if it did survive. I looked but did not see, assumed it ran off into the woods. The interior of the car had the odoriferous waft of the chemical warfare attack by the creature. I could only roll down all windows and drive back home (a couple miles) to begin the clean-up process, of a sort. Hand washed the interior surfaces with a bleach/water mix, saturated the cloth seats with spray air freshener. Thoroughly sprayed beneath the car with a water hose. The smell of the bleach generally over-rode the skunk odor; though the bleach smell did dissipate over a few hours the skunk smell lingered faintly for some time. Had hunting dogs get sprayed. They'll roll in the grass, dirt, anything to try to get rid of the odor. Just take them home and wash them down with soap and water.

@13:25 nooo never hold eye contact or smile at any apes/monkeys, and smiling (with your teeth showing) is a really bad idea to do in front of 90% of predators too tbh. To a tonnn of animals that don’t have external weaponry like horns/antlers/stingers/etc, their teeth are by far their biggest defensive weapon. So showing your teeth to them in any way is basically equivalent to someone out in public intentionally lifting their shirt to show you the gun they have in their wasteband lol

You should never show your teeth (smile) to any animal nor make eye contact. Showing your teeth is a sign of aggression for animals, as it's their primary weapon. Apes are particularly aggrieved by teeth showing. The smile is a unique human behavior, no other species smiles (though we tend to anthropomorphize most animal behavior, specially pets). And eye contact is perceived as a challenge, specially for territorial animals. That's why in pack animals (dogs, lions, wolves, etc) the submissive individual often lower their head towards the leader never making eye contact.

As a keeper and wildlife rehabber for the last 15 years there's pretty much nothing in here I'd disagree with. To some questions Tomato Baths don't work, someone I work with was sprayed 11 times - it just always takes about a week to shower off, tomato baths just make you smell more like tomato. Orangutans really are that smart, it's wild. We had a diabetic orangutan that would present her toe for blood testing (obviously this results in pain but she'd do it anyway). For a reward she would drink some very dilute gatorade from a gatorade bottle. Which was handed to her whole, which sent red flags for me the first time (what if she eats it). Nope, she unscrewed the cap, took small sips, would screw it back on and carry it around, when she was done she'd go come back in and hand the empty bottle back. Turkey vultures are 100% Dogs, they behave exactly as described (actually all vultures do, even old world vultures) hopping up and down when they see their favorite people and being playful, they grunt when they're happy/excited. In this same vein owls are basically cats. Also a tip if you want to have some fun at a zoo, look at the keeper colors - likely khaki and green. Wear those colors and come to the zoo in the morning or evening right before close. I can guarantee the entire visit will be completely different as all the animals will be looking at you as if they know you and they'll be expecting you to interact somehow (since this is when we move them, feed them, in some cases play with them etc)... they'll chase you along the exhibits, call, get excited and jump around. Not to mention sunset is when all the primates call to eachother, elk bugle, big cats/bears roar etc. It's a whole other experience. The big cats will pick you out of a crowd all day and always cozy up to wherever keepers are. The above is also excellent if you're trying for pics to practice photography since they'll often come straight to you as close as they can get.

The sad fact of why some animals get killed if they escape and injure someone, is not because they injured (or worse) someone, its the fact that the animal now knows it can do that and they become a danger to their caretakers. So not only do some idiots put themselves in danger, they also ensure that certain animals will get put down if the idiots get injured. And with monkeys/apes, smiling and showing teeth is an expression of aggression because you signal the intent to bite them. Making direct eye contact for too long can be intimidating to them, especially if that is combined with the showing of teeth, if you do both you basically challenge them to a fight, And of course you can up the stupidity level one more notch if you happen to do with with a silverback, which Bokito happened to be ;) (he was not put down i might add)

I didn't know the Prospect Park Zoo had polar bears (I live in Brooklyn), but it's not a surprise. The stupid human tricks are why zoos need to harden themselves somehow. I am angry at the foolishness zoo patrons can perpetrate; as for the cases presented in the video, part of me thinks it's a tragedy for all participants, the other thinks the people (except for the baby dropped into the habitat) got what they asked for by getting into the cages against warnings of the zookeepers. Even I know not to make direct eye contact with any animal. Still, had I seen it live I'd have been horrified like everyone else. And those having the audacity to sue the zoo for their own carelessness or foolishness? THAT makes me the most angry.

The Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Northern Minnesota was started by an old logger who chose to feed the bears as opposed to killing them when they'd break into the logging camp cabins. As it became more popular, they had to build a viewing platform to separate the people from the bears. People would sit their kids on the backs of the Black Bears for photos. People are so stupid. If the opportunities arises, I'd recommend visiting. Not many places in the wild you can go and see dozens of Black Bears at once in the wild (they are free to roam in and out of the park). .

Same as any Panda born in any zoo still belong to china and have to ve taken back at a certain age to learn "How to Panda", as most of them born into captivity dont understand, or cant be bothered, to mate. So they are shipped back and taught the ways, its weird... But in a good way, because in all intents and purpose the panda would have gone the way of the dodo decades ago, by tiger, if it wasnt for human interaction.... 🤷

I also don't particularly enjoy animal prison, although I'm not opposed to killing animals. Although, although I think I agree with you that humans messing with animals should get a stupidity tax. I like that idea.
