Great video! One thing that could have been covered in more detail was about the grits. These tools are great to clean off old finishes (stains, varnish, paint), and for cleaning up dusty dirty rough timber, however that kind of work really clogs up the belts. ... So I find that a "scratch" pass with 80 (or even 40 on some materials) is almost always a good idea just to knock the rubbish off. Using too fine grits too early will cause a world of grief, since the belt will clog and that causes heat... and heat embeds the muck onto the belt forever! ... Paints and varnish-like finishes are the worst, and if you melt them into the belt you need a screwdriver or old chisel to get it off. You will wreck the job if you are sanding with blobs of paint stuck in the belt! So, slow belt speeds, big coarse grit size, and very light pressure at the beginning! ... I suggest to buy a wide range of grits, 80, 120, 180, 240 and always use them in order. It's so quick to change belts that it's much faster to just start at 80 for a quick cleanup, then step up to 120 then go higher and higher (one step at a time). Each belt is only on there for a few passes before changing grits, so they stay cool and wear is minimal... hence you get much better belt life.

Great video. Thanks. I have same belt sander and over time it has lost some of the tension between the rollers - wondered if this was something you had come across and whether you’d been able to fix it?

So far not had that issue. I would imagine some bolts got loose. Worth checking out all the fittings on your sander

i only use mine now to take off lots of material, but its not pretty haha. i also have a little jig to mount on its side so it works a bit like a sanding disk type of thing. the dust it creates is mental tho and its so old i cant connect a vac to it as the connector is some weird polygon shape :P

A plastic drink bottle cut suitably will make an acceptable adapter for dust collection if you shrink it on using a hot air stripper.

You can't over emphasize the need to always keep a very strong grip on it. They're great fun to use 😛. I've always thought they would be great for racing, and somewhere on KZbin is a video about turning one into a radio controlled car 😜👹.
