It's set by your state's lawmakers. Some states feel as though it's no big deal to have really dark tint, but other states want a specific amount allowed. Part of what goes into this law is that officers want to be able to see inside the car as they are walking up to it, else you could have a gun pointed right at the window ready to go the second they get close. There are other reasons, but just some food for thought.

+Strangeclouds, Houston was stopped in the middle of the highway because that is where the officer had him pull over, he got out of his cruiser and walked up to him, when instructed to go to the side of the road he did. Cops stop in the middle of the highway all the time when there are accidents and whatnot, and in rush hour traffic going 5 mph hardly dangerous like it would be if cars were going 60+ mph. When a cop puts his lights on you stop right there. I still remember some asshole cop when I was in high school pulled my mother over and she pulled into a parking lot because she thought it would be safer for her and the cop than being on the road and he was yelling at her for doing that. The cop in this video behaved like a professional that understands she is an employee and that the public pays her salary, not like the petulant child on a power trip like the one in Houton's video with his skinhead haircut and typical Nazi cop sunglasses.

I don’t know if you’d rather just take it off, but I’ve gotten 2 fix it tickets for my tint in Utah for my Mazdaspeed3 and I just pay the tickets and keep my tint on! If you just pay the ticket you don’t have to take it off and reinstall, but if you’d rather just not pay then taking it off would be the best way to go
