Actually I remember that in the movie version, the cake is a little less distracting because they actually try to fit it to the character. At the end of the shopping montage, Kara puts on a really skimpy dress and when Clark disapproves, she immediately says "Perfect. I'll take it." She has more agency and it feels more natural as a result.

And yet, by the same token, we have a cartoon movie with Harley Quinn - who was an adult doctor for many years (supposedly) working at Arkham not only getting 'turned on' by Nightwing BECAUSE he used to be "The Boy Wonder all grown up", but its strongly intimated that they slept together in that feature. She should be at least 10 years older than him, and quite possibly knew him as a child (although in the RW we know that she was created after Nightwing became a thing, but canon has been rebooted so many times, plus she has no idea he was a different Robin). Seems like Nightwing had no end to number of girls who's butt-cheeks were always hangin' out to choose from.

Fun observation that most people had when that version was out. Artists like Mike Turner and Ian Churchill basically made Supergirl Britney Spears in her career prime. Loeb and other writers basically used the marketing of pop icons like Spears, Aguilera, and Simpson to sell Supergirl using taglines from Rolling Stone, MTV, and the WB. The character grew as the fame of who she borrowed from diminished. 2005-2006 Britney wasn’t a time people wanted to emulate so writers shifted her arc to being more about identity issues and making her own way.

Context and framing are always key. Even beyond fanservice anything overt or 'extra' can take the reader totally out of the story, for me the focus needs to include having all of your characters be 3 dimensional and not just there as a prop for the sake of being attractive or useful for moving the plot along. Characters can have strong sex appeal intentionally, it can be a part of the character by design and influence how they act like with Jessica Rabbit and others like her, but a lot of the time in superhero comics I've found that sexuality is not often taken seriously, more so used just for fanservice. When a majority of superhero stories are action focused that can make sense but then it has to be considered if the timing and framing of such fanservice is appropriate as to not take the reader out of the book or create an environment where it seen as okay or justifiable to objectify female characters without regard for them deserving the same three dimensional representation that they should have. I heard good things about the New 52 Supergirl run and thought that the idea of Kara having an emotional instability which leads her to becoming a red lantern sounded super interesting. I picked up the first volume and it didn't take long at all for me to be thrown off by some panels that felt like they were going out of their way to show off Kara's body in a way that felt uncomfortable, I wasnt upset or anything like that but I simply wasn't expecting it when the tone of the intro and covers felt like had a clear self-seriousness about them. I do like fanservice but I find that it works best when it is used for more light hearted moments or when taking a breather from the main story so that the reader doesn't drown in intense/complex arcs. You need a filler issue every once in a while and to me fanservice thrives in moments like that. My favorite Supergirl and the version of her that made me want to explore runs in the comics is from Justice League: Unlimited, the animated show. Kara there is powerful, headstrong, and fun but is still conflicted about her role as a hero as well as being trained to refine her skills over the course of the show largely by John Stewart. Her send-off in S3 is celebratory, wrapping up her story lines from across the whole show and she has her share of romantic moments without it shifting the tone or feeling out of place. Her costume is not too different from what we've seen in these 2000s comics but she was never used purely as eye candy, at least as far as I can remember. I rewatched the whole show this year which sparked back to life my appreciation for several DC heroes. Imo it was an amazing take on Supergirl, well thought out and well executed, and one which I really do love. Edit* I do not mean to say or claim that all superhero comics fail to seriously consider and explore sexual themes within their books, I know they're out there. And I do plan to continue reading the New 52 Supergirl run anyways because it still does seem good.

i'm a anime fan (where fanservice is the rule rather than exception) and 100% agree that fanservice doesn't have to get in the way of a good story. but sadly,sometimes that's really all the writers WANT it to be (take queen's blade vs monster masume: both are SUPER fanservicey but difference is that while queen's blade still has it's story about a noblewoman with no battle training entering a battle tournament to became queen of the capital and help the poor people of her kingdom: monster masume is just about all the ways a human guy is trying not to have sexual relations with sexy monster girls because he'll get arrested if he does) and it can't be helped.

@@daverhoden445 Perhaps it could a little bit. But in order to sell to Generation Cake we need a fresh origin. How about some way out there culture-war drama? The Kents move from the farm to Smallville. Puberty age Clark lacks friends so he utilizes Kryptonian science to create a robot, a female twin of himself he calls Linda Lee. He stashes her in a tree when not "needed". His parents understand, at first, he needs a friend to talk to. Then Ma and Pa Kent suspect he considers Linda Lee robot a possible "love" interest, wink wink. What they do not discover until the season finale is that Clark is pretending, true to form, actually hiding yet another secret: Linda Lee is the transgender version of Clark, and he considers advanced Kryptonian surgery to make it so. But Ma and Pa are horrified and disown Clark (Linda Lee), so they return him to the orphanage they had used 12 years before (after they found him in the crashed rocket). Season two, the Kents are written out; Clark now lives in the orphanage, goes to high school and fights crime as Superboy, but in the nearby woods waits his Linda Lee robot stashed in another tree. Although super--intelligent Clark is a poor speller due to exposure to Kryptonite, so whenever he re-programs Linda Lee he puts her on "otto-pilot" (some Binder humor here). He is still wanting the Kryptonian surgery to become truly Linda, but the only surgeon capable is in the Phantom Zone doing time for -- what else? robot abuse (this was Silver Age General Zod's original crime, if memory serves) Season 3: Clark has arranged for his Linda Lee robot, now blonde so they don't look like twins, to get a room at the orphanage. The Kents make a dramatic return to the orphanage and adopt the Linda Lee robot, not recognizing her after her hair change. So the joke's on them -- they're delighted they've replaced a transgender son with the blonde girl they always wanted, but she's really the robot they knew from the tree. Clark is sad to lose Linda Lee from the orphanage, but he creates another model for his future look -- a red-headed robot named Lana. Hey, it's all about suspension of disbelief, people.

Supergirl's (and Mary Marvel's) skirt has been grandfathered in like Superman's trunks. They're costume design choices you don't see in new heroes unless it's a homage or parody of old design choices. They get away with it because they're old characters and their costumes are too iconic. Every time DC has tried to remove these elements from their costumes in the main continuity have been met with lukewarm reactions and walked back a few years later. Personally, I think superhero costumes should prioritize aesthetics and symbolism over practicality (unless its supposed to be a gritty series or has to compromise for live action), especially with invulnurable characters that give artists more wiggle room for readers' suspension of disbelief. The image of an all powerful teenage girl flying around and kicking ass in a skirt is a more powerful image than if she were wearing armor. If you have an iconic look, there's no reason to change it when it markets itself. Magical Girl series use a design philosophy of "the power of the feminine" when designing their costumes and gear. That's the lens I use when looking at Supergirl's outfits. She expresses her personality through the designs (outside of the line about Ma Kent making her suit here, the Pre- and Post-Crisis eras show her designing new costumes in her spare time), as such her most iconic costumes are fun and appear more at home at a trip to the park than a battlefield. To me, the Supers' suits should look soft to the touch. Something that wouldn't make people hesitate to jump into their arms. All attempts to deviate from these design principles have fallen flat to me. It's hard to make the soft material look good (or at least not cheap) in live action, so they keep trying to add uncomfortable-looking textures (I'm not fond of any of the live action Super-suits, with Brandon Routh's Kingdom Come suit coming the closest to doing them right, and the Reeve/Slater suits have the advantage of older camera quality hiding the imperfections). The choice to make them ceremonial armor in the New 52 was one of the more tone deaf, IMO, too militaristic.

That being merged with the more 2D storytelling that was exemplified in this video. IMO it's the constant focus on Kara's age that makes the stories so strained. If she's 5 years older the stories still have a certain pin up factor but because she's an adult there's (possibly) less objections over how she's pictured.
@jtsg4642 жыл бұрын
I'd say the arguments there's a bit too much cake in Kara's early pre-Nu52 return are justified. While the artist's style did lean that way, there's lots of shots from that early run which were heavily leaning to the fanservice. Once Sterling Gates and James Ingle took over, that aspect was toned down considerably, with them even going as far as to introduce the...Skort! Which way too many people freaked out about. Overall, my biggest issue as SG fan during her initial return was the way they characterized and tried to use Kara. As said, different interruption of characters is fine, but the way they portrayed her just didn't sit well with me. Sure, have some culture clash or Kara being frustrated by trying to adjust to life on Earth. The fact she grew up on Krypton and thus, Earth would be alien to her, is a great area to explore. However, the DC higher ups seemed to not know what to do with her, so she was all over the place in motivations, personality, and stuff. It took Gates to sort of right the ship and give me a Supergirl I enjoyed. His run, especially the 'Who is Superwoman' arc for Kara, was a great one. As to the issue with Hal there, yeah that was a mess. Better way to handle it would have been to more show, Kara has a crush but eventually sort of gets why Hal doesn't feel the same way. Maybe with them becoming friends or at least, avoiding the uncomfortableness you highlighted. I never knew about that issue but seeing Kara in that outfit at the gladiatorial arena...yikes. My fav runs for Kara Zor-El Supergirl have been Sterling Gates's stuff, both for the Nu52 and then his TV tie-in Adventures of Supergirl. The early Nu52 stuff for Supergirl, though again, they started meddling with her, leading to more BS. And Sasha if you need another dumb comic controversy to look into, the Supergirl Skort stuff was pretty dumb. Great vid and love your stuff!

Peter David's 90's Supergirl remains one of my favourite comic-book series of all time (in general, not just Supergirl books). It's just such a shame that it ended on such a sad note (and with another of those alternate Kara/Supes hook-ups because awkward). Not long after that, the "original" Supergirl was re-introduced as discussed in the video above, and there was no room for Linda to return to the DCU in any capacity. (Someone going by her name and with powers that she no longer had in-continuity did rock up in 2008's Reign in Hell. Being reminded at the Uber cheesecake nature of Turner’s art in the reintroduction also reminded that Jeph Loeb writes books for the artists. Man, that Jeph. He knows what the fans of particular artists want. Sometimes to the nth degree. It’s really evident when he wrote Supergirl with artists like the late Michael Turner and Ian Churchill. What really detracts is the incestuous stories involving Supergirl and Supergirl herself, being lusted after by Superman. Fortunately, I missed the later fetishizing after the Batman/Superman series that you were mentioning. I think there was a comics story where Supes said, and I’m paraphrasing, “If you weren’t my cousin…” Wow. Ok. What Sasha doesn't get into is how we got this Kara (which I have always pronounced the way the tv series doesn't): Peter David had been writing the Matrix Supergirl for years, but wanted to bring back the classic one. DC said "no", but he talked them into bringing her back for ONE short storyline, gambling that the fan response would be so great, DC would be stupid not to let him make it permanent. The version he wrote in that storyline was very in-line with the sweet, "nice girl" original character...and fans *loved* her! So, DC gave in...with two conditions. 1) They fired David/cancelled his book, and 2) they gave the project to Loeb, who immediately decided that "nice" Supergirl was old fashioned and boring and gave us the sexed up, "bad girl" version, which exactly *nobody* had asked for. Took a while for DC to correct this, but you can't convince me that, on some level, they weren't doing this out of spite...

@Hand-of-Omega Good news is the comic improve once Sterling Gates took over BUT Jeph Loeb had done considerable damage to Supergirl's character with turning Kara into "sexed up" edgy teenager who hits on GL & Nightwing (even if there is a age gap) & was a bad hero with her literally leaving power girl behind to save the civilians of Kandor & trying to talk new superhero Tara (no relation to Tara Markov) out of being superhero & saving people to Instead just Party

@danmerget2 жыл бұрын
@@naquingreen1603 Minor nit: the STAS Supergirl had the white shirt first. After Linda and Matrix split, Linda started wearing the white-shirt costume from the animated series. That said, I thoroughly agree that Peter David deserves more credit. His run of Supergirl was so good, it lasted longer than every other Supergirl comic series that DC has ever published. It even had more issues than all of the pre-Crisis Supergirl series COMBINED. People tend to sweep his series under the rug because "she wasn't from Krypton like the pre-Crisis Supergirl", forgetting that the pre-Crisis Supergirl was never popular or well-written enough to carry a book on her own for very long. The only reason Supergirl isn't a forgotten character today is because (a) the pre-Crisis Supergirl had such a memorable death scene that people developed instant nostalgia, and (b) PAD wrote a popular, interesting comic that revived interest in the character.

Cake tastes good when you add the right ingredients. Some enjoy the parts of the cake where there is extra cream, and some are just good with the bland cake. What they can both agree on though, is that too much cream will make the cake distasteful.
@Jake_E572 жыл бұрын
I feel like during this run there was so much cake it did detract from the weight of the stories in the main Supergirl book. There’s this element of Supergirl trying to find herself and define her role within the DCU, but it gets overshadowed by outside factors thanks to artistic choices.
@peterdubois72762 жыл бұрын
It seemed to me at this time that DC wanted to highlight strong women characters, but also was afraid they wouldn't sell so went with a lot of cake. I call it the Psylocke effect- X-Men's Psylocke had been a strong, well written character who dressed like a librarian. And she was British. Then Marvel made her into a sexy Japanese ninja assassin who wore a skimpy bathing suit. The comics sold, and I don't think she ever got any solo stories or had any good writing. DC may have been trying for the Chris Claremont era Psylocke with their female characters, but used cake to substitute for story and character development.
@markthomas5032 жыл бұрын
I think it is being presented the cake along with a bowl of innocence and naivete that gives it that cringe factor...almost like it is warping into a kind of pedophilia...you will notice that Dinah doesn't have that problem as Black Canary...lots of cake..but she is in complete control as well as self, and situationally aware. Anyways...this makes me happy for the current run of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow...which I am hoping will define Kara's character for quite a while!!
@BThings2 жыл бұрын
I don't really have a problem with cheesecake, but a lot of people execute it poorly. Regardless of its "sexy" nature, cheesecake often sends vibes of being lighthearted and playful. Thus, it can take you out of the story when this fun/silly visual appears in something that is otherwise serious. It could be used for juxtaposition, but that's different from just being randomly out of place. On the other hand, I think there is sometimes too much hand-wringing about costume designs and wanting to make it so that super heroes can be "taken seriously." Generally, it's way more important that characters look like they're at home in their outfits than that they fit some external sense of practicality. (I think that's actually part of why Kitty Pryde has never landed on a motif for her supersuits (or her code name); she's most at home just being herself…but that's a different topic.)

I think in comics, everyone will end up being objectified at some point because many of the characters are usually wearing skin tight outfits that highlight a (what many consider to be) peak or ideal physique. However I do feel agency is important if we're talking about objectification leading to some kind of character development, empowerment or just having less squicky factor. Granted, like Sasha, I also enjoy going back to read more hot mess issues. I find them funny and I do enjoy thinking through what could work there and what perhaps doesn't work for me and why. Also problematic things really can be funny -- oftentimes people laugh when they are uncomfortable. That's normal!
@mappybc60972 жыл бұрын
Context and the way it's handled. Selina Kyle has wore several skin tight leather outfits and often uses a whip, which heavily references S&M culture. It works with her because a) She is an extroverted person perfectly at ease with her sexuality and b) Because almost every time she is objectified by others it's by design so that they underestimate her and thus she retains agency instead of being a victim. Dick Greyson on the other hand copes, but it's far from comfortable, with the fact he is objectified by so many people including his own bloody mentor/father figure. "I would recognize that butt anywhere" -Batman And, most tragically, he has actually been reduced to an object and a victim. Like Starfire kissing him upon meeting him. Yes she was trying to learn his language but even then it doesn't change the fact she did it without his consent and later admitted he chose him because she was physically attracted to him. Btw, that's far from the only time Dick has been kissed without consent for a variety of contrived reasons. And worse of all? He is one of only a handful of DC heroes to have been raped and while Tarantula ends up in jail she is never charged for rape and Dick just kept it secret because he was actually ashamed of being sexually abused.

The BatB comic was absolutely creepy, to me in ways that I embarrassingly relate with. I was one of those teenagers who was attracted to a person or two who were incredibly older, that were like friends of family or something of a similar nature. You're young, you're infatuated, you're developing romantic interests, and you try to 'casually' find ways to get closer(like asking to share an aura-er I mean a Jacket) so you can almost fantasize that it's because they must secretly like you. I think it's more common than any would want to admit because as you get older, it's like a cringey thing to think back on for yourself. HOWEVER, Hal constantly repeating her age was an issue to me, because it came off that it wasn't an obvious issue for him that she was underage. He needed to constantly remind himself that she was too young, like she was a near irresistible temptation. He's been a space cop for how long, dealing with how many universal events, yet he is so distracted by the need to remind himself that he doesn't want a visit from Chris Hanson. Really? It could have been a comical, learning, or developmental moment for her. Like, just politely telling her that she is too young, understands what she must be going through at her age, but has no interest. It started off as that but his conclusion solidifying his reason is that she's Superman's cousin and recommends a change of costume! ONLY TO STILL REPEAT THAT SHE'S 17! Creepy! AND IT WASN'T RELEVANT AT ALL TO THE STORY! Thanks for coming to my TedTalk

Guess that's why they even had that son together.

Supergirl's body got showcased to excess in this era with more skin than costume. Her mid-drift design began with the WB cartoon (emulating teen fashions). Athletes (gymnasts, swimmers, wrestlers, runners) reveal just as much (not on US television, which mandated above-the-waist shots since the 70s) but the attitude here was about titillation. As for sex undertones, only the writers can be accountable. (Glad you brought up the males; Superman and Batman's forms in Turner's art were intimidating, to say the least, but I suppose they would be.)

I have never been a Supergirl guy - the skeeziness of how she was drawn made me feel uncomfortable. I do like some sexy superhero art, but generally for older characters like Huntress. My personal favorite Supergirl story (not era, because I don't know enough of her stories to have a favorite era) is Batgirl #14, the team up with Stephanie Brown. She was really fun there, and I'm still so sad that Nick Spencer's attempt to relaunch Young Justice with Kara, Steph, Damian, and several other characters was killed off before it even got started (leaving only the gorgeous Amy Reeder covers to tease us with what could have been...)

It's specially uncomfortable considering she's a teenager, and she was kept drawn as this over sexualized teen girl, which considering how the character has never been taken seriously by writers, it really makes you think Supergirl only exists to have a hot sexy girl in the pages and that's it. Her story? Doesn't matter. Her difficulty with fitting on Earth because she lived in Krypton most of her life, with ingrained culture and ways of living? Doesn't matter, let's just make her a "born sexy yesterday" trope and do stereotypical teenage girl stuff. Her feelings on how her entire planet and civilization were wiped out entirely? Doesn't matter, let's just make Superman be the one who mourns the death of Krypton even though he never knew the planet, while the one character that did live there, knew the culture and people, will just be there as a sexy lamp and will never explore her feelings.

Feels like one of those times when you probably should just hand it off to a female writer. Get the character on track and establish them with a writer that has some experience and connection with the character.

This is the real tragedy of Supergirl for me, that they have story telling gold fall into their laps and they can't think of anything to do other than "female Superman sexy". Sexy isn't the problem (well, not the main problem), story is. So I was pretty happy when I found Stirling Gates' run, where Kandor is literally on earth being all upsetting to everyone with its thousands of Kryptonians that aren't nearly as nice as Kal El, and Kara is stuck in the middle. Finally, somebody cared about her story!

I grew up reading this era of Supergirl, I think you brought up so many great balanced points in this video. I would agree the way she was drawn did go a bit too far in the examples you showed but i don't think the costume is necessarily problematic, I think often the discussion of the practicality of a costume comes up with female characters but I would argue that practicality need not always be considered with the context of certain characters. Kara is bulletproof, she is also a young woman, therefore I'd expect her costume to more reflect contemporary fashion trends rather than armour. I do see that she is potentially a victim to the male gaze but I also think it would be puritanical to presume all women would want to dress modestly, there's a balance. If I was designing her now, I would definitely be looking at instagram and tiktok for examples of contemporary teens and 20somethings, women who have dressed themselves rather than a male fantasy. I feel like the way Wonder Girl just before the New52 is a good example, with the vest and jeans.

I really liked Joe Kelley's run making Kara moody and rather disinterested in superheroics. She being angst filled just made her more interesting to me. It was like Zack Snyder's Superman but done right.

Good discussion and vid. My favorite Supergirl era is her 90's run by Peter David. I was already a fan of David and this series was great, I think he took the character in new and exciting directions...the reintroduction in the Michael Turner era was disappointing to me, not just because of the cheese, but because I think the stories were generally inferior.

Interesting post & very entertaining. I wasn’t a big DC guy especially where Superman and his family is concerned so I don’t know much about Supergirl. 1. Outfit/costume: Most female characters have the most ridiculous costumes and for some reason they’re rocking high heels while fighting bad guys. Emma Frost (White Queen) is a good example of this. When she ran the Hellions you’re telling me that the teen boys in the group totally ignored the fact that she was walking around in a outfits that was more appropriate for 80s S&M porn. If I were a Hellion being trained by Emma Frost I’d have to stop every 20 minutes to touch myself inappropriately and she’d know because she’s a telepath. 2. Underage girl older man trope: I don’t know when these Supergirl stories came out. I’ll assume late 90s early 00s but it seems like what is looked at as creepy and problematic now was used more as a joke back then. Like when Green Lantern repeatedly says she’s 17 to himself. I’ve seen that trope forever. It’s not used as much anymore because people find it inappropriate even as a joke. But here’s what I don’t get. GL is a super hero and there must be groupies so he could smash hotties around the globe and throughout the galaxy/galaxies and probably has. He shouldn’t be interested in Supergirl. She should be just a friend from work. 3. Inappropriate Rant: Superman is THE most powerful hero in DC so that makes Supergirl a very close second correct? GL is a regular guy that happens to be overconfident which makes him a perfect companion for the ring. How could a human being sexually satisfy a Kryptonian? Superman probably blew out some barn walls when he was a teen. So how could a delicate human handle him? Wonder Women could probably hang but it would still kinda hurt right? So how could a mere human man please a Kryptonian woman? Everything about a Kryptonian is enhanced to a god like level on earth. So it seems to me one of the first conversations Superman has with Supergirl is that you can’t hook up with humans. Not even most of the super powered ones. You will kill them two minutes into sex.
