I want them to follow up on Cannonball (And maybe get the New Mutants together at some point. Maybe the season finale). I believe his episode was the last one of the 90s series and having Sunspot and him interact would be nice. Also Illyana Rasputin. More people need to know about the coolest X-Man.

Magneto's speeches. Both of them, he completely just captivates, scenes like this really hammer home why he's one of the Mutant cause's "Thought Leaders" It's not just him being a powerful mutant, but there's an actual cause and oratory skills to spin that cause, which is good.

Fun fact: Rouge becoming good & the gun that neutralizes Storm's power started with Rom the Space Knight a character they can't use due to rights issues. _ Rouge tried to absorb Rom 's power but his power com from being a cyborg. Instead se absorb his nobility & kindness, feeling she has never experience before & she found that she like these feeling ,like being a good person _ The gun that take away Storm power was reverse engineered from Rom's neutraliser which can neutralise any form of energy, it was designed to fight dark magic of the Dire Wraith. The original has many function that the replica doesn't(sending people to Limbo, can finely tune its power to target a specific energy like a curse & leave the person unharmed)

One of the things I liked about the way they laid out the bigotry issues is that they are ultimately irrational. And that's how bigotry should be displayed because it is. You shouldn't have them be technically correct but just being mean about it. But Magneto's last speech, as he's holding the UN Council and the X-cutioner up in the stratosphere, is a thing of beauty. Erik barely holding onto his promise to Charles behind his incandescent rage. His statement about how he does not CARE if they love or like him and his kind, they are going to have to simply accept that they exist and that's that. Particularly poignant with a lot of the discourse today. But also still ends on the cheeky last line of "Do not make me let you down" while he has them suspended a couple miles in the air. Wouldn't be Magneto if he didn't let you know he COULD kill you if he wanted to.

I loved how the series adapted the Trial of Magneto. It was such a good comics' story, I knew it would work here. What I like about the animated series is how it always adapts the stories from the comics, how it doesn't go beat-for-beat, but makes it work within the show's parameters. This is no exception. Getting to see more of Magneto's empathy, and seeing him work to keep from defaulting to his usual ways was satisfying on an emotional level as well as a storytelling one. Though the moment Jean named the baby, my brain started thinking ahead to what they were going to do in episode 3. I love this new feeling for the series; when I watched as a kid, I hadn't read any of the comics - those came later for me, in late high school. Now, having read decades of X-Men, the clues in the animated series are visible to me, and they make me excited for what's to come, and how the story I know will be adapted to fit this medium.

I'm actually expecting a retcon, where they say that Magneto was working with Mystique when she led the Brotherhood (or he was a the shadow-leader or something), and that's when Rogue developed a crush on him or something. Though I don't recall how old she was supposed to have been then (she never looked that different in the flashbacks), so maybe they'll say they had some kind of rendezvous between the end of the first series and the beginning of this revival. I never really "got" their relationship in the 616 Universe, as I didn't collect comics when the Savage Land incident occurred. Weirdly enough, while I liked Rogue and Gambit's dynamic in the cartoon, I didn't really care for them as a couple as the the comics went on. But I especially didn't like that, after she got control of her powers, and after Erik tells her about the time he want a-Nazi-huntin', they ended up sleeping together. While she was kinda taking things slow with Remy. Definite low point in Jason Aaron's run, if you ask me.

When I was reading X-Men in the 1980s I assumed Magneto had some low-level psychic powers / psychic defenses which the helmet enhanced. This mostly came from the psychic powers being mentioned in the Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe and the mention of the circuitry in the helmet you mentioned in the video. So I didn't see it as an absolute defense against psychic powers, but I did think it helped increase his natural defenses. I agree that the movies were the first reference to the helmet "protecting him from all psychic attacks" but I had always assumed Singer was using the fact that the helmet had "psychic enhancing circuitry" in the comics as a inspiration for the psychic shielding in the movies. It is kind of funny that he just invented it from whole cloth in an attempt to close a plot hole.

Great recap. Whilst I don't think its as bad as the Harry Potter "Wizard's don't use bathrooms" retcon, type of thing, was never a fan of Magneto "needing" his helmet to deter or block telepathy. Its the kind of simple answer to a simple question/problem, that sounds good on the surface, but the longer more nuanced explanation is more interesting. Like Magneto having a natural resistance, as quite a few mutants do tied into their powers (Storm and Gambit come to mind), additionally... Xavier and Magneto were best buds, Magneto whilst not a telepath himself, probably learned a few tricks and ideas, and his natural resistance was probably boosted as well. Especially if he knew, as far as ideals, they might row apart. Then that also makes sense why later he would try to use technology to give himself telepathic mind control powers, because he knows hoe potent and susceptible others can be. You can ask all sorts of "why doesn't XYX character just do this?" and sometimes the answer isn't just "they wear ABC clothing item", or it is, but it might not be interesting. I mean sometimes it can be interesting but yeah. Doesn't really bother too much though, but creatively speaking, I liked older explanations.

Because of the sliding timescale, age honestly makes no sense in Marvel. I know there are people who want logical explanations for every single aspect in the fiction they consume, but I genuinely believe that age in Marvel is something where you just kind of have to turn your brain off and go with it. Kitty Pryde was 13 in 1979 and is now 21+ (she has been shown to purchase alcohol), whereas somebody like Tony Stark has not aged nearly as much in that same timespan

Thank you so much for the breakdown. This is such an interesting episode. I’ll admit that I am not team Magneto Rouge, but that is probably due to the fact that my first exposure to these characters was in that first Bryan Singer 90s film and in that story there was a significant age gap between the Ian McKellen Magneto and the teenage Rouge (and of course he terrorizes her in that movie and the other x-men have to save her). I know that that was a different story line and these Magneto and Rouge can be different. I think the storytelling on this new series is very good and could get me to see this new (to me) storyline as something worth accepting.

The helmet thing is definitely a retcon because of that episode in season one of the original Charles made him relive his trauma and magneto totally had his helmet on lol

it could also be the helmet was 'altered' after that event.... although since I don't remember them saying that retcon is a better fit

You mentioned the Strucker kids and I'm wondering of you ever watched The Gifted? That might be another interesting show to dive into.

One of these days I'd like to see an X-men property use the lyrics or heck even the song from David Bowie's "Oh you pretty things". Listening to the lyrics feels like it could fit in a mutant story. It's totally stupid but i had it in my head for a few days now.

I tend to think of early Kitty when I hear Irene Cara's What a Feeling. That lady from Flashdance looks a bit like an older version of her too.

I've always known about the many times Rogue and Magneto got together and I'm here for it. Besides, most people are just angry she's not with Gambit as though she's not going back to Gambit by the end of the season

Excellent episode overall, love the comparison of FoH to Jan 6 rioters, well done. I would appreciate your thoughts on one theory I’ve seen for why they’re bringing in the Rogue/Magneto relationship; it can be argued they wanted a love triangle without one side of said triangle pining for a married woman & hoping for a marriage to break up, which Logan has been accused of in the old show. Yes, the marriage was not gonna last once the Jean/Madelyne dynamic was introduced, but still… also, love Morph’s title in the opening using the Exiles font.

Another thing worth noting... in the '92 series, Charles absolutely does use his psychic powers on Magneto, even in the helmet. So it isn't absolute proof against them.

I wish there had been a scene with Magneto and Beast that mirrored their scene when Magneto tried to free Beast. For Episode 3: I wish the nightmare stuff was the bulk of the episode, ending with Goblin Queen leaving with Nathan. We could see them continuing on the run as a B-plot in E4 and Inferno be E5 or E6.

X-Cutioner's Song!... But sadly, I doubt it would ever happen, since it involves all of the X-teams (X-Force, X-Factor, etc.), as well as Cable, Stryfe and the MLF, and Apocalypse, and it would take at least two seasons to set up all those characters and teams so that the audience would care about them or at least be interested in them, especially when it comes to Stryfe's story and the ex-New Mutants kids (now X-Force) being hunted byall the other X-Teams. Other than that, it would be nice to maybe get an abridged version of the Siege Perilous story, where the X-Men basically become invisible to all technological viewing/tracking equipment, so nobody knows who they are or what they look like anymore, and they set up a base in Australia and try living "normal" lives for a while... well, if "normal" involves routinely taking on cybernetic mercenaries (the Reavers), taking on Sentinels from the future, and using bar brawls to fight off a massive alien invasion consisting of about 75% of all the alien species in the universe, and doing that in just a few hours. Oh, yeah, and it wasn't even the full team that repelled the invasion, just Collossus, Wolvie, Havok, and Longshot. (and even the full team at that time was down to only about eight or nine members). And at some oint during all that, Storm gets turned into a child, as well... The Australia X-Men were insane times, and insanely fun to read!

Eric has a bit of a cross dressing vibe with his ensemble, opera gloves and "cat" suit. Kind of Tim Curry Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I think it would have been interesting if Executioner had said “I’m only here for Magneto, not you,” and add another layer of nuance, especially if Magneto wryly commented how he understood his skepticism to let things play out in the justice system. But then it’s kindof hard to have him connected to the FOH with that “only bad mutants” qualifier and you’d have to portray him as some vigilante that showed up on his own and…the whole story gets a little messy at that point?
