it has value because its the best asset type, easy to move, easy to secure. you can take it to the grave. and its guaranteed to be scarce, nothing in the human history has the same properties. house prices are not high because people need houses, they are high because traditionally, people put their value in the house market in order to protect it, because houses are scarce. you cant put your value in gold because gold loses its value because there are more gold being mined every year, it doesnt survive more than 2 generations. people uses houses as store of value because there was no other option. they are not great, they require maintenance, security. and houses are easy to tax, because you cant move your house to another country with less tax. if you tax btc too much it can leave the country in someone's head. bitcoin should make houses cheaper and more affordable because then we dont have to use them wrongly as store of value out of their purpose

I used to hang out with a guy who got into mining back in 2008 during the Folding@Home days. A few years later he had a basement full of PCs, then in 2019 he cashed out and vanished. Good luck Don, wish I had listened.

I think one of the biggest strengths in Bitcoin is that if I want to send $30 million to a guy in Bolivia on a saturday night at 3AM I can do so in 10 minutes while paying maybe $0.5. Try doing the same thing in the traditional banking system and tell me how many questions they asked, how much you had to pay, how long it took and how many watchlists you were placed on.
@ChristopherHallett4 ай бұрын
If you're sending $30 million to a buy in Bolivia you;re doing it in USD cash, in Pelican cases, on a chartered private yacht, with an armed security team. The only thing bitcoin was ever good for in a commercial sense was buying bathtub meth off silk road.

gold wasnt valued since the dawn of humanity, lots of random crap unique to a specific society was though, like sea shells - in this context whats important is something common that everyone accepts and has access to while having properties that ppl attribute to as good SOV

And the societies that used sea shells got trampled by societies that used gold. Later on, these societies started using gold instead of reverting to sea shells.

Gold is rare. It doesn't tarnish. It's small. It's physical. That's why it was used. In the modern world it can't be used for payments but its still physical which is what makes it unique compared to other investments.

@axnoro4 ай бұрын
@@hedgehog3180 Seashells are an inferior sort of currency to gold. They are easily produced by industrial societies, whereas gold is not. People need to realize that the reason gold was used as money is because of its properties which make it the hardest natural money and not because it was 'available' or because it is pretty or anything else.

I remember seeing a sign at a deli in 2011 that they took bitcoin and wondered what that was. My buddy said he could show me how to buy it, but I thought it was a dumb trend and said nah. 😢

Spoiler alert: that deli did not actually accept bitcoin anyway. Various interested parties just went around sticking those stickers up in such places long before any of them actually accepted it.
