My first time watching The Shawshank Redemption (1994) I wasn't sure what this movie would be, but I found an unbelievable message of hope. Honestly, I felt incredibly uplifted and while I believed this movie would be a masterpiece, I had no idea it how much I needed the message it held. I hope you enjoy my reaction & commentary!

@@Clayton.Bigsby.360 I can't speak for everyone, but it is hope that gives me the drive and motivation to take action. The belief that what I do can effect change When I lose hope, I believe I am destined to fail and I sink into despair lie in bed and eat ice cream until I fall asleep. Both are good, but I find a direct correlation with my level of hope and ability to take action. 🤷‍♂️

It was so lightly regarded at the time that it was shown on airplanes almost immediately. I remember it being on during a cross country flight I was on that winter. I had never seen it and didn't know what it was about. I didn't even watch it during the flight but glanced up a couple of times while trying to sleep. All I observed was that it was about prison. (I probably slept through the ending.) A few months later, we rented it from Blockbuster and saw it for the first time. I was blown away at how good it was. Apparently the rest of the country recognized it at around the same time and it spread like wildfire.

Out of all of the Shawshank reactions that I've watched, I think your commentary is the most inspiring. Maybe as inspiring as the movie is. I felt at times like like you were speaking directly to me. You weren't, of course, but the illusion lingers. I feel guilty for my lack of hope, especially after seeing the hope that these fictional characters had, who were in way worse situations than myself. I think I most relate to Brooks; older, past my prime, children grown, friendless, insignificant, alone. Oh well, might be time to move on. Anyway, thanks for letting me use this forum as a shoulder to cry on. I seriously appreciate it.

Some interesting facts: 1) Not only did Andy hide the rock pick in the Bible, it was in the book of "Exodus" (the "exit"). 2) Red told Andy that hope was a "shitty pipe dream". Andy escaped through a "shitty pipe" dream. 3) Red's mug shot was actually Morgan Freeman's son. 4) Shawshank should have one the Oscar over Forrest Gump. But it was a great year for movies (Pulp Fiction, etc.)

Stephen King tells a story about being recognized and swears it's true to this day. He was in a store and got recognized and this lady starts telling about he shouldn't be writing that horror stuff and should write good stuff like The Shawshank Redemption. He said "I wrote that too." and according to him she looked him up and down and gave him such a look and said "No, you didn't" and walked away. I love Stephen King. He is my favorite author. What we really see in Shawshank and was captured so beautifully in film here by Darabont is King's strength: His depiction of people. His knowledge of people and making them feel so real and like you know them is one of his greatest gifts and Shawshank puts it on display. King is a master of human character. People tend to lose that amongst the horror elements in his work, but it is really why his stuff endures. "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies." straight from the story and King is full of gems like this. Plus, if you loved this definitely do The Green Mile another film based on King's work directed by Frank Darabont. It stars Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan. It also takes place in a prison mostly and the story is amazing and heartbreaking.

I went to see this on a double date in highschool. I hadn't seen a trailer or heard a thing about the movie going in. I had read the King novella a few years before and it was "ok", but I couldn't see it being a 2 1/2 hour movie! So I forget what the other movie option was but I got overruled and we watched Shawshank. It was wonderful. I've probably watched it another ten times over the years and certain scenes just get more powerful with each watch. I'm not sure if it would make my top 10 list, but it would be a difficult decision if it's not. I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Chris. Thanks for sharing your reaction.

One of the things I noted in your reaction. You said -- about Boggs, the rapist played by character actor Mark Ralston -- he came across like he didn't have a soul. Ralston has made a long career playing such characters, but in person he's one of the kindest, most gentle people you'd ever meet. And funny, too. When he's not playing hard cases, he tends to play comic relief. He's just... very good at playing sociopaths, so he gets cast that way a lot.

Great movie and great reaction. I've seen quite a few reaction videos to Shawshank and I've been disappointed that they all cut the line at the end when Red ends by saying "I hope." Those two words are incredibly powerful. Red had earlier said that hope was a dangerous thing and had indicated that he had given up hope. At the end, when going to find his friend, he states simply, but powerfully: "I hope." Those, in my opinion, are the greatest two words in the movie. Keep up the great reactions!

The power of this film to me is shown in the fact I first saw this on a coach coming back from a midweek football game in 1995 with 49 beer’ed football fans and within 20 minutes of the start the film a hush descend over the coach that normally didn’t happen until that short of a journey. It was only about 2 hours to home and normally people get their stuff together to ask to be left off on a few stops just before the end of the journey and then the moment we got to our destination the coach would empty. That night there no early stops and we pulled into our destination and we didn’t even realise we were home as there was still 30 minutes left of the film and they turned it off we all scrambled to get off the coach and then I had wait 3 days before I could rent the video to find out what happened.

The scene where Rita Hayworth flicks her hair is from her movie 'Gilda'. Frank Darabont was delighted to find the movie was free from copyright restrictions.

Loved your reaction as always! I've seen this movie many times but I found myself tearing up yet again watching you experience it for the first time. Just an interesting tidbit: This movie is based on Stephen King's novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption", which is one of the 4 stories included in the book "Different Seasons". Before each story there's a one line intro indicating which season that story represents. For this one it's "Hope Springs Eternal". 😊

Regarding Eastwood, he starred in 1979's "Escape From Alcatraz", which is where a lot of the ideas came from for "...Shawshank...".

This is a masterpiece of film, My favorite movie of all time, everything is just perfect, the script, the directing, photography, the acting of all the actors, the bad one did great job, you hate the Warden , Hadley, Brooks, and Morgan Freeman he great actor and great narrator, but Tim Robins, is for me a Oscar acting, because you could see how he acting and move different than the other prisoners, and that battle between Hope and reality, and the Redemption that is more about Red redemtion, the one that who didn't have hope, he finally get the hope in the end

I don't expect you'll be back to read comments on this, but let me ease in here for any others some facts on Brooks. Brooks went to prison in 1903-4 and was paroled in 1954, after 50 years. Consider the world he left and the world he was released to. Apart from having no family, he missed 2 world wars and a huge cultural upheaval. It's like entering an alien landscape for him. Now layer over that not having choice or decisions, of being out of practice in setting your own goals, managing money. being responsible for yourself. When he went in, there were very few cars or telephones, no passenger planes, no radio or TV. Expectations were different, rules were different. It's a lot for an old man to adjust to, and too much so quickly.
