Love seeing those Winspace frames in the pro races. Proof that you don't need to mortgage your house to have a race worthy bike. Also, if you talked to Donny before a race, you'd probably think "what is this tiny little soft spoken man doing in this pro race?", right before he drops you. Absolute beast out there Donny, surely braver than I am racing with those guys.

I really appreciate having Donny on the channel. As much as this video is about the differences between cat2 and P/1, he provides some perspective on the differences between cat2 and cat3 which as a lower level racer I find incredibly helpful. Please bring Donny on again.

Back in the 90s I was a Cat. 2 on the verge of being a Cat. 1 and would be in those races that were Pro/1/2. And that's when I quit racing, because the jump from Cat.2 to Cat. 1 or Pro is like dog years, and I knew I wasn't good enough, and wasn't prepared to make the sacrifices to even try.
@thhorwitz1

It's much easier today to get your cat 1. There's a large number of cat 2\3 races now and (I think) you no longer have to get all your points within the same year. I think it's going to get harder again with future rule changes on upgrading. But the last few years USAC made upgrading so easy in all categories that it created a dangerous situation. If you had stuck with it, you probably could've gotten used to it and don't well. When you're no longer racing for upgrade points, you race differently, better.

Power is actually proportional to the cube of velocity. Force is proportional to the square of velocity. Power = force x velocity so P = kv^3

power was higher in the cat 2 race...i mean - the 2 mph are significant, but the "over 80 watt difference" statement is a tad misleading (great video, don't want to bitch too much. love the channel, basically learned racing from you!)
@nullvoid4226
@nullvoid4226 8 ай бұрын
How can it be misleading, it is the average power required to complete the effort...
@teddansonLA
@teddansonLA 8 ай бұрын
I don't agree it's misleading. In the cat 2 race, 246 W (285 W NP) gets him to compete well against the field, spending his time at the front of the race, making and covering breaks and finishing near the winners. In the pro race, 238 W (283 W NP) means he gets dropped with 4 laps to go, having never been near the front, never being close to a break or covering one and generally just hoping to make it to the end. If he'd averaged 80 W more than the cat 2 race performance, then maybe he could have done something near the front of the pro race. So that seems about right - he'd need a circa 320 W average, and a 360 W NP for an hour or more, which is more like a pro than a cat 2.
@robertskochinstitut6653
@robertskochinstitut6653 8 ай бұрын
@@genegade It is all about positioning, cornering and being smart about moving up. I can ride the same race at 320/370NP and get dropped or do 260/280NP and be there competing for the win. The faster the course, the easier the races become. I have yet to see a technical crit featured here, the roads and corners are often super wide.

Brief annotation: while drag force is squared, with speed, to get from force to power, you actually have to apply that force along a certain direction giving you the work done over that distance. Divide that by the time it takes you, gives you the avg power you need to put out. So to maintain that speed against aerodynamic drag, you actually don't have to put in the speed squared, but to the power of three. I.e. 10% more speed gives you 1.1^3=1.33x the power you need for the original speed. In other words: 80W more from 243W is pretty accurate 🫡
