Cat Bells - Is it for Beginners? With Em from Emz_Adventures

So on a well earned day off, and after consulting with a friend or two about if I am capable of doing Cat Bells, it was decided, I was doing it. So I met with the fabulous Em from Emz Adventures, and we went on our merry way.
Although I've hiked some miles and Em is experienced with hiking in Northumberland, neither of us, were quire prepared for what lay before us.
We're not daft (although, it looks like it at times) we are both sensible and know ourselves enough, when to say its time to go back.
Upon returning home, I found 6 websites/blogs on the first page of Google, which state Cat Bells, as a beginners walk. If you have never done anything like this before, such as scrambling, this fell is not for you. And not one of those sites make any note of the scrambling and its accessibility! Which I think is misleading.
We made light of the situation, and both agreed on a day with less wind and no lovely Rolo, we would both have another go. Regardless, we both had a fantastic day!

Ladies, ladies, lovely ladies!!! After loving Emz’ video and seeing this you two have to start a third channel, you need to meet up so much more and document it together on this third channel! You bounce off each other and are such an inspiration to others (of all different abilities) I smiled from ear to ear watching this (and not just because we have known you both a while, plus had the amazing opportunity of meeting you Dee) but you are both such beautiful characters, natural humour and all! Give me more ‘Emz & Dee Do Hikes!’ (That’s not the best name for your third channel, you could come up with something much better I’m sure!) Love you both dearly, keep enjoying those green spaces and stay awesome! ❤️

Ah Dee we absolutely loved this video🥰❤️👏. Saved it to watch on the TV last night. You and Emz are absolutely hilarious together, a you tube match made in heaven! We would love to see more meet ups from you two😊👍. And fantastic effort from both of you, we agree this route up catbells isn't really beginner friendly, some of the scrambles can be a bit sketchy , especially in the strong wind that you guys had, plus Emz had roly to consider too🦮🐕🐾. We think you made the right choice on the day, not to say that you won't smash it next time!😊👊 And it was clearly still a really fun day with some fantastic views, job done😊👍. Thank you for showing just how difficult the scramble can be. I always thought it was a lot easier than that because of what I’ve been told by people who say it’s an easy fell. But seeing it now I definitely won’t be doing catbells anytime soon. I will need to work on my confidence with scrambling. Looks like you had a fantastic time though x
@northernchubbygurladventur7539

This was nearly on the edge of what I felt like I could do. But, I think without the wind, I could make it. But yeah, it absolutely isn't the beginner friendly that everyone thinks and really anyone who does wants a stern talking to. There is alternative routes but one side is steep and shaley and the other is greasy steps. So it's doable without the scramble it's just steep! I did have a great day and it was still worth the trip out! X

I did Cat Bells as a kid with my folks and I can't remember the scrambles being that bad (it was a long time ago though) - I don't think my knees would thank me for it now - as you say definitely not a beginner's fell. One to try again in the summer without the strong winds.

It's definitely not a race. I just take it slowly and take it all in. I'll have to do a sunrise hike. Beautiful views. Sounds like you had fun. My goodness, that's a scramble alright. There is nothing wrong with knowing your limitations in high wind. It is the sensible option. It will be there for next time. If that's the beginners one, I'll give it a miss. 🙄😳Thanks for sharing.

Carried my bag full of overnight camping kit up there back in the summer - was blowing out my whotsit by halfway! I can imagine it would put a lot of beginners right off. Still you had a good day out with a mate and gave us all more than a few smiles so all's good! Maybe have a look at Rannerdale Knotts? Great views over Buttermere. Said it dozens of times before 'Catbells is not a beginner Fell' and not an easy one either for the novice hiker. Oh so pleased you said that word I used to love saying (but dare not say now), others like bint, totty, spare, you just dare not even mention now...oh no I have mentioned them, I may be getting cancelled . Good to see you both out and you make a great double act, so I hope you will both be out again in the very near future. I have been up both of those lying down ladies😛, which look like Barrow and the big one Grisdale Pike, which is a right bloody slog and part of the Coledale Horseshoe which I did last November 2021. That stone path up is lethal in the wet and frost so great effort on that and the first two scrambles. You do not realise how well you did in that wind and you were so close but the best way to go up is the way everyone comes down, no scrambles, no edges, just steps up all the way, so for the person who is not confident, I would go up and down that way, not the way you went but fantastic effort on what you did! Take care and I hope you enjoyed that sandy and pub lunch, it sounded amazing, cheers Alan.

Ahh, Alan you should know me and Em aren't bothered about stuff like that. But you're absolutely right, you probably would! I don't know how people go through life without laughing at stuff like that! It was such a good day, Em really kept me going at times I thought I was guna panic and bail. Oo right so that's what they are called! Oh yeah, Grizedale would make sense because it drops down into Whinlatter, ah yes, makes so much more sense now! I wish we knew about how bad it would be to get up the nose, otherwise we probably would have taken the path, but again mislead by blogs, websites and asking folk about how I would manage, and yes it's not easy, I do think on a calm day and although not Rolos fault, if he wasn't there we wouldn't need to worry about him too. Definitely going to try again, if anything, it has given me a bit more confidence to give it a bash and I'm more capable than I thought, as long as I keep respecting what it is. Oh we did. We enjoyed our grub and shandy! So so good. Thanks Alan and have a super fantastic weekend 😊

Hey Dee 😊 great effort and well done for giving it a shot at catbells 👏👏 I agree it isn’t the easiest fell out there. I’d say it’s a good one if you want to do your first or second bit of scrambling but if you want a path and no scrambling there are definitely easier fells out there. Binsey is a good beginner fell with no scrambling. Catbells does offer some fab views mind. Scrambling is always a little scarier on windy days too. I’ve done a fair amount of scrambling now but I still get nervous with some scrambles esp if I’m by myself. I still go up some scrambles on my bum if I’m worried haha 😅 I have no shame. You actually made it pretty close to the top there. But you done the right thing always better to turn back and stay safe on the fells. Great job though always next time as you say, the mountains are going anywhere. 😊

i did Catbells this way as a newbie and thought it was quite tough. It's all about experience and slowly pushing the boundaries be it difficulty, distance walked, height hiked etc to establish new levels. Well that's what I have found anyway. No shame turning back for whatever reason. The hill will be there when you next go. Oh and as I said to Em there's an easy route up Catbells round the other side. At least you still looked like you had a lot of fun and you got some awesome views. i'd say still not a bad day out 🙂

Absolutely!! I did really enjoy what I did. And I have to give ourselves credit where it's due and I certainly didn't think I'd make it that far when I realised what I had to get up. And I'd definitely give it another go in less wind. We did know about the other routes as our plan was to come down either one, but chatting to a very experienced friend, she said we would be fine... And probably would have been if not for the wind. And we still had an amazing day out and had so much fun, and that's what it's all about for me. Thank you for the support, have a super fantastic weekend! 😊

Ah you lovely pair, loved this. Don’t forget if you want a linear route with no scramble you can do it up and down on a very easy path to the summit of Catbells. Only go as quick as the last man, like that one Emz. We loved meeting up with you guys so much, we will be editing and airing that this month, just want to hopefully do it to the Bronze Age seats in the house, ive got a lot of research to do! Emz your spirit animal?😂 love it ❤ yeah, good shout, Latrigg is easier! Can see that wet polished rock, id think twice about scrambling on a day like that, you defo made the right choice! Pointy one and pointy two in the distance, love this! Can name you all the fells to the North and South easily if that helps? 🧐 out to the west, that close, i’ll pass for now! I can see why this would scare you on a day like this, alone on a wet and windy one? On a hot, dry summers day with kids and pensioners flying up you’d be very comfortable on this fell! The hill of a thousand summits? Wainwrights doing an extra spin on that new name! 😂 really hard to beat Catbells for those views! Listen that wind! Lovely day out ladies, was amazing! Yay to the pub lunch! 👍 pie and chips? SOLD xx

Well, the reason we didn't do the linear route as we didn't think the scramble would be that bad - famous last words. And in a way now I know what I know. Yeah it's bad, but it's achievable, just not a day with so much wind. And I did get some confidence from it it. I'm guna have that bugger next time round. We did see blenny and Skiddaw and the other little one who's name I can't remember 🤣 we had a good few guesses but those pointy things, they are staying with Em's naming 🤣 Food was great and was such a good day 😊 have a super fantastic weekend you two! Hey! So sorry for the late reply! I've had a manic week! I absolutely agree, I was shocked at how my blogs and websites had Catbells listed as easy! With no mention of what is involved. I'd definitely give it another go, just with better weather. I'd love to have a go of the old man, but I did wonder if it's a bit far for my fitness at the moment. I guess it would depend on the route? But otherwise I'd love to give it a go.

Cat bells is definitely not for beginners. It was my first hike and I had a mini melt down at the first scramble lol. The wind would've put me off too. All that matters is you had a good day ☺️

I know right! And yet soooo many blogs and websites claim Catbells as beginner friendly and don't even mention how steep it is or the scrambling bits! Madness I tell you 🤣 I mean, I did think at one point, what the hell am I getting into but luckily, we do have some sense and said, if it too much we wouldn't carry on. And absolutely, had a fantastic day hanging with Em and that's what it's all about 😊

I wouldn't say it's easy but it's not 2 technical I've seen a few turn back when they get to the little scramble bits also because it's so popular the rocks have been worn smooth which can make it very slippery.but with a lot of things just take your time it's not a race Wainwright lied a bit saying it's for grandparents and kids lol that makes everyone think it's easy.you will be doing Helvellyn and striding edge next😁

I'm going to take it as a compliment that you think I'm safe to be let out on Striding Edge 🤣 I think that is pushing my limits to be honest. I broke my ankle eating an ice cream once... So I'm amazed I'm allowed out 😂 I think on a better day, I'd definitely do it. And it's on my list to do when the weather is a bit better and I trust myself to not freak out. And totally agree, there are worse ones to do but it's definitely not a beginners one! Thanks for commenting 🙂

@@northernchubbygurladventur7539 if you want to do Helvellyn maybe do it from Thirlmere side 1st then you can see the edges or go up via whiteside.if you really do want to do striding edge a nice dry day with no wind is recommended also there's a little path just below the edge

@@craig3401 if I'm going to do Helvellyn, that would be the way I'm going up. Up the bridleway side. I'll wait till I grow another pair of legs before attempting the ridges 🤣

G'day, Mr. and Mrs. Nothern Chubby Gurl. I always appreciate your vid, authentic work of art. I made a Xmas wish: I would like to see you on a kayak in the water in 2023. My double from AU has been staying with me. I am living off-grid devoting my time to her since I couldn't be with her during her chemotherapy. Please forgive me that I treasure 25 yrs of friendship the most now. I shall return to be one of your loyal audience as soon as she leaves US soil. Happy Holiday. You always have my 👍 Will you be having a lovely White Xmas? Ooops, it's midnight..I must get some sleep since I'm planning to take my double kayaking to see dolphins and manatees.👩‍🦰👩‍🦰

As I said to Mrs 7Seas. Life outside of KZbin is way more important. Spending time with friends is a priority. We will still be here when you're back. Don't worry. I'm working on getting on the water. But will be later in the year when it's warmer 😊
