European etiquette is the result of the major Royal families competing with each other to appear 'more refined'. The Russian Tsars (RIP) won and set the ultimate standard. A good proportion of the working class (including my grandmother) were 'in service' to their Lords and Masters and aped their manners in the hope that their offspring would 'obtain a better position in society'. Debretts is the international guide to etiquette and 'table manners' are available online. The American way of using their knife and fork is inefficient and weird considering their idea of a meal is to shovel it down as fast as possible rather than enjoy a relaxed feast with conversation. However, a 'refined' European will never object nor complain about the eating habits of foreign visitors; rather, they will observe the manners of their visitor and attempt to copy them to make them feel comfortable. There is a well known story of Margaret Tebbit, paralysed by a bomb attack, attending a State Banquet. Prince Philip, famous for his faux pas, discarded his cutlery and ordered the following courses to be made into 'finger food'; that is how you treat a guest! I still recall the first time as a teenager I was invited to an evening meal at my 'middle class' friend's home. His mother asked if 'Fish and Chips was OK'; expecting greasy stodge from the local chippy I was pleasantly surprised by nicely cooked breaded plaice and perfect potato chips. There followed a standoff; he was aware that I came from a 'working class' environment and waited for me to start eating whilst I, being taught exquisite manners by my aforementioned grandmother, waited for him to start.

I'm in the same boat, I never travel outside of the London bubble or the surrounding areas outside of London. I have travelled to Cornwall, Wales and Ireland but nothing above Manchester, although technically travelling to these areas I visited the most popular places and actually know very little about how ordinary folk live in those areas. I know more about continental Europe! Than I would my own country, I've always seen the UK as being bland since I live here but we have places like the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Eden project, Cornwall is a hidden gem and I'd like to see more of it than anywhere else in the UK.

Whenever I have had the chance to visit the English Lakes it has days which seem to cover all four seasons' weather inside 24 hours. Wordsworth and the other Lakeland poets garnered so much inspiration from the mists, the grey hills, and the juxtaposition of water, mountains, and ancient history. I think you might enjoy the movie Miss Potter, which includes a lot of great footage of the area whilst covering the affinity between the authoress of so many children's books and her love of the district. My youngest son has often said that the friendliness of the people of the area when his band played at the Keswick Music Festival one year was so overwhelming and honest that he and his 12-year old band mates stayed on for a whole week at local people's homes. It's great seeing it vicariously now through you two great youth ambassadors for your country.

So I think you are just amazing. I am a grandmother, living now in the Canary Islands, moved here in my 60s. I am Scottish, originally from Glasgow but lived in Preston for 45 years where I had my children and 4 grandchildren. You may not want oldies like me messaging but you seem like a credit to your upbringing. Smart, curious, polite, respectful, open minded, willing to see the opposite opinion . I wish you so well in your future life. Good luck.

Because traditional pea soup is made from yellow split peas and those horrendous London fogs were actually yellow from all the soot and sulphur from coal and coke burning.

I love that you've met up with people who've been able to drive you around! They've also been able to guide you around the complexities of tea making and show that some like mushy peas and others don't!! Reading the comments, once the holiday/vacation vids are over, I challenge you to learn the UK way of using cutlery/silverware!! No hate, but the US way really does look awkward!!

Laughed at your cousin when she took the piss out of Will - "Stick your small finger out when you stir the tea " ROFLOL. Joel : you need some dining etiquette classes. You need to use your knife all the time actively when eating and there is no need to load the fork with a mixture of foods. Lay the fork and knife in line on the plate (at 12.30 ) to show you are finished lol.

It was good to see you in my neck of the woods...the North West of England and your stop off at Preston then up to The Lakes. Pity you didn't get more time to spend in The Lakes but looks like your cousin did a good job of showing you around. I was right in a previous comment when I saw the photo of you and Will outside the little house in Ambleside. Hope you both come back in the future and visit the North West again.

Round my neck of the woods (Sheffield) mushy peas isn't just an accompaniment to fish and chips, it also goes with meat and potato pie - and Henderson's Relish of course. It also often appears as one of the veg choices with a Sunday roast. Corned Beef in the UK isn't the same as Corned Beef in the US, in a sandwich it's probably better with some tomato on it or a smearing of brown sauce.

If anyone is heading to the Lakes I suggest seeing the fells more and Ashness Bridge, Castlerigg stone circle, Derwentwater - all near Keswick in the North Lakes. Or go on a tour with Mountain Goat which takes in these sites

I grew up in Carlisle, Cumbria, about 30 mins from The Lake District, so lots of trips to the lakes growing up. The weather you’re having is pretty standard (sorry), but when the sun shines, the scenery is just breathtaking. You’ve made me quite homesick. 😢

Geeez you are packing so much into a short time. I'm only ten years older but now I would need at least three days at every location to catch up on sleep and to not feel rushed. I used to tear through Amsterdam and Berlin onward to Prague, partying all the way. Now I'd like to do that partying but with a 2 day buffer zone to sit and read a book and eat.

Another fun video from Joel and Will. Your cousin and her hubby are pleasant and such good tour guides. I'm a tea purist. No milk (that's so non-British), no sugar, always brewed with loose leaves. I do hope "our" two boys will try black pudding.

The little Bridge House at Ambleside - that is a piece of my family history. My mother was born in Windermere and lived most of her childhood in Bowness-on-Windermere. A distant relative actually owned the Bridge House and used it as a storage place for his house decorating equipment and paints.

It was nice seeing you Joel with you’re British cousin in the U.K. Its a small world, that’s for sure. As you’re channel grows I think you have a wise head on young shoulders. Also, you restore my faith in the youth of today, because you have a lot of respect for people and you’re elders. Keep posting those videos, I enjoy watching them very much. :)
