A friend of mine bought 4 of these brand new... 3 Tri Axle Dumps (Red) and 1 Tri Axle Tractor (Gray).. He got a great deal on them they were left overs from the last year they made them.. it's a hell of an upgrade considering they replace a 1988 Kenworth Tandem dump truck and a 1992 international Tractor...

Just a couple of things: conceptually the truck is really nice. It has some good features like the air lift gate, the steerable lift axle, the heavy rears and so on. The issues that I have always had about the International/Cat cab is the poor visibility over the right front of the hood. On job sites that sort of visibility is crucual. That's why the bumper has a three piece design. If you can't see to well generally that is what is sacrificed first, the bumper. The hood on the cat is round and undefined which makes.precision placement of the truck more difficult. It's fine if you want the air cleaner under the hood but it just makes the hood seem bulky etc. I'd get drive tires with more aggressive tread especially if it's an on road off road truck. Finally my greatest pet peave is how trucks today are going more and more to automatic transmissions and are woefully underpowered. Shifting a manual transmission isn't that hard a concept to master. I believe that manual transmissions give the driver more control of the truck. They pull harder, they work much better with the engine brake which means that they will stop the truck better. A 12.4 liter engine especially with all the emission controls will really have to work hard to give you the performance in acceleration, engine braking and even speed over hills. From a buyers standpoint it's a good package when you first buy the truck, but I believe the company would be better served with a manual and more power. Conceptually a good price of equipment but I believe it's lacking in some crucial details. Also remember, Cat is getting out of the truck manufacturing business. I'm sure they're not building anymore for a pretty significant reason........

You comment was one of the best I've read. Clear understandable and concise. The one point you made that I really like is about the hood being rounded. Made a lot of sense.

As far as automatic trans....The 2007 Mac quad with 6 speed Allison that I have used is a power performer. I have never gotten stuck. I have pulled fully loaded quads out with it. It pulls, drives, and go like hell! I have driven a brand new 2019 Mac quad with the Mdrive and have had no problems. I have also driven 2016 T800 Kenworth quad with a Eaton auto and have found no problems either. Plenty of power! I have been driving auto and 8 speed manuals in Pete, Kenny, Macs quad dump for about 6-7 years in all types of on/off construction /road work . Plus the other 30 years of OTR across 48 states and 4 millions miles, I did that with manual 13, and 18 speed tranies. So now that the knees are over 70 years old the automatics are great. The autos have come along way with the performance and reliability!

Also I'm not picking on your choice of cat truck for purchase, but instead I'm curious when you purchased this truck , was there not any concern with cat quitting and getting out of highway trucks building ? Any concern over support and or any possible situations may arise from this truck? Or is navistar going to support this equipment in the future since cat doesn't want to play the emissions game? Just wondering what your thoughts may be?
@DirtNinja8 жыл бұрын
+william Delarge We purchased the truck before Cat announced that they were stopping production. Our dealer has told us that they will support all Cat trucks until there are none on the road. I am not too worried at all about parts. Cat made the truck with Navistar and the new International HX series trucks that were just announced are literally the same exact truck as this one. I will be able to get parts from Cat or International for ever.

Just to let you know . Marker INT is actually marker light interrupter switch. It's legally said its there for "checking your lights" but that's not true . Drivers communicate at night with their lights. So for eg you pass someone and the flash you saying your good to bring her over you then hit the interrupter to say thank you! But that is considered illegal in Canada and USA so hence why the interupt is their for driver convenience but badge under driver light check.
@williamdelarge24918 жыл бұрын
Btw anyone who reads this I'm "NOT" saying rely on another driver solely to tell you at night your clear to lane change! That's for you to ensure your safe to change lanes! Just clarification in case anyone misinterpreted what I previously said

@BigDogDuramax9 жыл бұрын
+Dirt Ninja So.. just the front axle wasn't heavy enough? I'm just trying to figure out how you justified a new truck because of a low weight front axle and small motor. 185,000 is a stupid amount of money for a new tri axle
@DirtNinja9 жыл бұрын
+BigDogDuramax The front and pusher were too low. GVW of the old truck was 67,800 and the new one is 86,000. I cant register it for 86k but it just shows how much more heavy duty it is. We had also put a ton of money into the old truck and had a ton of problems with it yea after year. It was a never ending money pit. A tri-axle size truck is very important to how we do work and we just couldnt rely on the old one anymore.
@BigDogDuramax9 жыл бұрын
+Dirt Ninja I know in Pennsylvania we can only register our tri axles to 73280lbs. it's a goofy number I know. it is a beautiful truck but expensive, it's good to see that the company is doing well enough to afford that.
