I have to throw my two cents in. I just clicked on this video and then started looking through through the comments and I have to say WOW. I have seen less emotional outbursts on political and social issue videos. This is cat food. Every point some of you are going in on this woman for, she addresses and she gives you HER reasons why she makes HER cat food the way she does. If you don't like "cooked" food MOVE ON. I thank you ,How To Really Cook Lady, for this helpful informative video. I have a finicky cat and I know that in the end my making her just chicken is better thank 98% of the processed crap we get at store (human food as well!!). So, as I learn more about nutrition for both of us, we will grow healthier together! meow

This is really a better idea than feeding commercial cat food!! I started cooking for my overweight 12 y.o. cat when he licked all the fur off one of his legs. Found out that food allergies was a probable cause. So I quit feeding him kibble and found a recipe online. The short story is that he 1) lost weight, 2) his fur became lush and soft, 3) he quit licking his leg and that fur grew back, and 3) he started playing like a kitten again! He lived to 18+!! I miss ol' Figaro.

Figs’ Homemade Cat Food In a big stock pot (8 quarts or more) add in: 3 packages of chicken hearts and gizzards, picked over and rinsed 2-3 ounces of liver 2-3 pounds of ground chicken or turkey 1 beet, peeled and roughly chopped (for fiber) Water to 1 inch of top of ingredients Cover, bring to a boil then simmer for 1 hour with all the windows open if possible (this is very smelly stuff.). Cool to touch for a couple hours with the lid on. Grind the whole lot until smooth with a blending stick or in batches in the blender. Mix thoroughly then spoon into plastic containers and freeze. This made enough to feed Figs for about 2 - 3 weeks.@@debbiedebbie9473

About 15 years ago I had skunks, possums, a boatload of stray hungry cats ( as the humane society was on the other side of the lake from my house). There were groundhogs, raccoons, you name it every species of animal that dwelled in the woods surrounding my house came out every evening searching for food. What I came up with was primitive, but I managed to keep them all well fed and the satisfaction I helped them survive the cold harsh Winters. I knew nothing about nutrition, all I knew I was doing my best with what I had to work with. I'd boil the chicken till it fell of the bone. Then remove the chicken and debone it. As I was doing that I'd throw in some plain white rice to the broth. When the rice was soft, tender and plump, I'd return the deboned chicken back to the broth and rice. It those animals alive. That was my goal and I achieved it. The possum was the cutest. He'd know what time I came home from work and be waiting for me under the dumpster

You can say whatever you want, but your cat NEEDS certain things to be healthy and happy. Do you know what any of them are? Whether or not you're willing to learn depends on how you might feel if your cat suddenly dies. If you want to keep them with you, you have to do right by them. That involves learning and trial and error. If you are lazy, stick with the canned cat food. Don't make it up.

@Sarmatae18 ай бұрын
@@frostflower5555 In order to feed your cats a raw diet, you have to know how a cat's body uses food, what it can and can't digest, and you have to add certain vitamins that they don't easily absorb from sources humans would. It's not as simple as going into your kitchen and whipping up something they like. Cats like almost anything. If you don't know what you're doing and aren't willing to put in the research...keep using canned food. It already contains everything they need. You can literally starve your cat to death. I've seen it. KZbin is not the place to learn things like this. Your vet is.

It was a mixture of meats and fish and sold in bags for a few dollars for pet food. We took it home and cooked it in a big pot and sometimes added bread, cornmeal, rice or table scraps. A couple little helpful tips that will make your project a lot easier. Use a large electric pressure cooker and run it through two Max cycles and let it depressurize naturally. No matter how you cook it, add a half a cup of apple cider vinegar at the beginning. This not only leeches all of the calcium and Morrow from the bones, it makes the bone very soft as well, if cooked the proper amount of time. Now all you need is a heavy duty stick blender or food processor to include the bone in the food. This works, I know I've tried. I even dry the bone sometimes and make my own bone meal for the garden. It crumbles real easy even when it's dried.🤗🤗🤗

Same. I have a mama-cat that turned up on my carport 10 yrs ago, & 3 of her 10 yr old kittens. The old Tom I had at the time aged out & died a few years ago, but we too have a serious problem with strays & ferals. I brought two friendlies in about a year ago & one of my OG “kittens” just refuses to accept them, so those 2 have to live apart from the other 4. I occasionally space switch, have installed a screen door between rooms to prevent the fighting but permit exposure, & occasionally just turn everybody loose to see what will happen. I also have 4 outside, & maybe a 5th who turned up during our recent cold snap. He comes & goes, but he’s learning that the food supply here is reliable. The other 4 are a once-feral alleycat in his prime, & the completely feral young female w/ 2 kittens that he brought home last Fall. Neutering the tom did nothing to settle him down - he still enforces dominance in his territory around my house & looks after Adanedi (new mama/cat) & her kittens as he does so. I think #5 would be an established presence if not for George, but I basically try to stay out of the feline politics. I don’t permit bloodshed, but aside from that they need to be cats & I need to stay out of it. So that’s at least 11, & if that weren’t complicated enough I’m dealing with my mother’s estate along with her house & the contents. All of that is 75 miles away, & the house is 5,600 square feet that my folks spent a lifetime packing to the gunnels. The cat situation is complicated enough, it’s 11 cats with wildly varying degrees of socialization, & 5 of them live outside. I check on them several times a day & work with Adanedi as often as possible - she’s the most feral. The kittens are _not_ feral because I spend time with them, & of course George is George. The 150 mile round trips & working on that %*#%*!!^ house are absolutely getting in the way of bringing these guys together. I really need to be looking after them all together instead of as 3 distinct groups. … & I definitely need to address the burn-rate on their budget, so thanks. I’ll be trying this myself.

If you can cook the bones down until they’re soft, you can run them through a bone grinder and make a very nice bone meal which can be added back into the food. It has calcium and the excellent nutrients that are in the bone marrow. And then you don’t waste any thing or risk having your cats choke on bones or have a perforation in the intestine.

Insta Pots are great! I think I mentioned how much faster the bone broth can be in a pressure cooker. I personally don't have one, simply because I use pressure canners for large batch food preservation, and I don't mind conventionally cooking things like this. I chose to pull out the bones, even after they reach the softened point for fear of choking hazards, and then use a stick blender on everything else, meat, organs (when I have them), skin, etc.

The whole point to this diet is to avoid dry food entirely, in this case to avoid urinary blockage( she says rhis in the vid) If you do some furthe r research on other natural vet channels like Marty Goldtein, Dr. Beck, Dr. Jones, and Dr. Richter, whose supplement has given me wonderful results,you ll understand why.

I give a little wet food & mostly dry food because wet food causes tartar & you would need to have the cat's teeth cleaned by the vet regularly. Canned cat food causes tartar buildup on the teeth, so I give both wet & dry.

As a mom to MANY cats (currently 13, but at one time 22 - and these are not farm cats) I can relate to not only the cost of canned food but the sheer effort of getting it all into the house! I've recently become more concerned about just what goes into that stuff, too. That's for the info!

I have heard that so much of it is bad and often contains more carbohydrates than mest. Cats shouldn't really get carbohydrates (or very little) as they don't digest it that well and definitely not sugar So I would really look into the food, how much meat (majority should be mest) it has and carbohydraytes and sugar.

So don't buy anything that says flavour of mest or contains mest as that food will only have couple% meat, if even that.

May I share a tip I learned? When pouring from one container to another, like when you're pouring the liquid from the bowl back into the pot, if you tilt both containers as you're pouring--tilt not just the bowl you're pouring from but also tilt the pot towards the bowl, you will spill very little liquid, if any.

I have a quick question… I cooked the chicken in the oven and am finishing it with your recipe (with pumpkin and rice), BUT… was going to use the Instant Pot to finish, but didn’t know if I should remove all the grease that cooked out of the baking chicken. It seems like a LOT of grease, even though I tried to remove excess fat before baking. Thanks for your video and I hope you can answer my dilemma. I have only made bone broth with baked or roasted chicken before and only seeing your recipe this morning, I guess I THOUGHT I had that part down pat! Oops! I did not come back and look to see that you did not do that step until I was ready to continue. Thank you for your recipe and input. Next time, I’ll start right. It’ll save an unnecessary step anyway.

@@JoannaTrautman thank you so much. I did go ahead and add it to the instant pot. I figured if you said to take it out that I could scoop it off the top of the bone broth before incorporating it into the food. I’m glad to know that’s another step I won’t have to take. LOL It’s always amazing to me how much fat there is and when I had a little dog, I left too much of the grease from the turkey that I made bone broth from and it made her very ill; the vet told me it caused pancreatitis, so I have tried to be careful since then with the level of fat. Anyway, I hear you and I’m glad that (from now on), I can eliminate that step of roasting, because as I said in my original question, it will certainly be quicker. Again, I thank you so much for your response and for your video instruction. I am praying my two (old) ferals like this food because they need it to live at this point. You want to make sure the pot of food cools down within 4 hours. Your refrigerator may not be able to do that and putting a large pot of hot food in the fridge will increase the temperature of the fridge. I'd suggest transferring the food to smaller containers or putting a large bag of frozen water in the pot to help it cool more quickly.

i make something Very similar to this & my kitty crew Loves it...i add in organ meats when i can find them & i leave in the gristle/carteledge because it helps the older cats retain healthy movement..i also break the bones & boil them in a small amt of water for a long time as the marrow comes out & i can then add that to their food....i also use pumpkin or sweet potatoes or squash cos they love them & try to steal them from my plate..lol..and a whole stick of unsalted butter & left over cheese for a treat...i use a little less rice than you do..but overall..it's pretty much the same. They are Thriving on it. For a change, but not too often as they don't like it as much, i substitute the chicken with turkey or whole salmon...or hamburger.

I used to foster kittens. I had 13 of my own rescues.(all spayed and neutered) I've made homemade cat food. Something I would do in the future if or when cat food becomes expensive. Chicken, or other fowl types of protein, has the nutrition specifically important to cats. Just like this lady here describes in cooking the meat, bones, and skin. I throw (even done this with turkey with bones, and other parts we don't like. I put them in a big pot, cover with water and boil it until the bones begin to turn a chalky white-ish color. That's an indication that the bone marrow has leached out. I do this the same way I make homemade broth to use when flu season rolls around every fall. Feeling crapy, a bowl of this chicken broth, I like to put diced carrots(not too much, it'll sweeten the broth), and diced potatoes or just angel hair pasta. The broth I freeze to make soup for ourselves when sick. After the bones turn chalky white, I turn off the burner, let it cool down, then I strain out all the bones) I like to cool it down over night so I can skim off the chicken fat before I divide it into freezer containers. (OR if you're really ambitious, process in sealed jar rings in a pressure canner, meat and broth together for soups, or other recipes). I freeze them because of health limitations. I feed my cats a good healthy dry food, its more costly, but they don't have so much vomiting as the cheap stuff does to them. So I budget their food needs into my grocery budget. It does require me to give up certain products, but at least my cats are healthy. And then feed them a canned wet food as a treat. But this stuff is good for them if they're feeling a little peckish. One cat has kidney failure, and when toxins build up in her system she gets very 'erpy'. I will feed her some of this homemade chicken stuff for her until her body recovers. Its just the nature of the beast called chronic kidney disease. (She and I were diagnosed with ckd in the same week, only mine is a rare disorder). When I cut up a whole chicken for us to eat, we don't eat certain parts, like the two back sections and of course the carcass, and even the bones from our plates. I just take these pieces and put them in a freezer bag and freeze until I have a several pieces, then make my broth. I do this boiling bones with beef/oxtail, pork, and other poultry. And don't forget to decarmelize the pot or pan your meat has baked in. Just try it, when you're sick, get yourself some broth out of the freezer or open a jar, add herbs and spices as you like. Cook the potatoes, carrots and noodles in the broth and eat. You'll be amazed how you will feel after. Same thing for the cats. I also feed my cats sprouted oats for grass to eat. Its not like grass outside grass. This is like salad for cats. I keep a rectangular planter with dirt, and plant the oats. Just sprinkle on top of soil, water the pot very well, keep it moist until the seeds sprout. Nice sun location will sprout the oats in three days, but they can take a week to sprout. Just water it about once a week or is the soil gets too dry. Set it on the floor out of the way so your cats can get to it any time they want. But it has to be oat grass.

Wow! Cheri, thank you for sharing your knowledge! Whew! I'm still absorbing. Good stuff. I love the way you approach feeding your cats - there are multiple variables impacting it, both external, like availability and price, convenience, and time, and internal, like your kitty's dietary needs. Flexibility creates adaptability, where everyone wins. This video is one way to feed our cats - I'm actually in the process of producing a video similar to your description using turkey. Yes, bone broth has been part of holistic health for millennia. Regarding the cat grass, I'm sure your crew just loves it! Oats are a type of grass, but not what most people have for their lawns! Me and your cats have a very similar diet! I stumbled onto your video because my cat who had accidentally hitched a ride to town 30 miles away, 6 weeks ago, just made her way back home! It was truly a miracle! She looks perfectly healthy except for being VERY skinny. She has free choice grain free dry food but I want to encourage extra calorie intake and for it to be nutrient dense. I make soups from whole chickens all the time, this actually looks like the perfect way to get her what she needs while she recovers from her adventure.

Just saw this video. Thank you this is pretty much what i do for my tiny colony. The main difference is i can it so it lasts longer. Since i don't expect to be storing for months on end i haven't yet pressure sealed the cans and do store the jars in the refrigerator for up to a week. I finally bought a pressure cooker but i am still intimidated by it. When i get my confidence up i will probably be making larger batches for longer storage times.

I have made a cooked cat food for years now. My process is similar but I add several supplements that I don't see you doing.
@lukejosselyn77063 жыл бұрын
So glad to read that you add supplements to your home made cat food as they are necessary 👍🏻 I hope you don't bulk out your home made food with any vegetables or rice, etc as cats are carnivores & do not need these in their diet at all, they can cause harm as they can't digest them properly.
@lukejosselyn77063 жыл бұрын
@MURZBO vitamin b, taurine, fish oil, vitamin c, Morton lite salt for a small amount of sodium + iodine (this can be naturally supplemented if you use rabbit carcasses that still have the thyroid gland intact as that has the required nutrients). Supplements added depends on what you make your food with but with saying that cat food should be made from meat products, NOT any vegetables or carbohydrates AT ALL. Cats can’t break down vegetables or carbohydrates as they do not produce the required enzymes to do this so they can’t digest these things properly or absorb any nutrition from them. I’ll post a link to a website soon once I can use my iPad where I have it saved. There are so many health issues that are caused by low grade commercially produced cat foods & kibble/biscuits should never be fed to cats as they draw the majority of their water source from their food, no matter what any cat owner thinks they aren’t natural drinkers even if people think their cats “drink plenty of water from their water dish” it’s just not true.
@auraaurora98153 жыл бұрын
@MURZBO Hi. I wish my kitties would eat the raw but they just won't. To the cooked meat (after removing the bones) I add Vit E, taurine, bone meal powder, Vit B100 and lite salt. I also put in a small amount of kale.
@lukejosselyn77063 жыл бұрын
@@auraaurora9815 it can be a slow transition to get them to eat complete raw food but it will be worth it in the long run but if they won't it's no huge loss so long as you incorporate all the required nutrients. If you can get them to complete raw food you won't need to add bone meal powder either if you use raw bones (which are much healthier as they contain bone marrow). It definitely sounds like you are using the right things in your home made cat food though based on the added nutrients you are using.

I steam 1 large chicken 2nd or 3rd daily to feed 12 cats. Its takes about 1.5 hrs to cook well. Then cook the rice in the liquid with fresh pumpkin/zucchinis or other cat friendly veg. Debone and mix together. Cost is about $3-$6 Au per day. Tks for the idea Joanna. Oh also I do add some offal a couple of times per week, like some liver or kidneys pureed, also I give them the grizzle in the mix. Steaming is less messy than boiling. I also only use filtered water. To make it into a terrine, just add gelatine mixed with cold water.. It's easy to slice. Again Joanna, tks for the recipe.

I can’t wait to try this recipe. I have three kitties and two need something besides that nasty Hill’s Science Diet. Ugh! Had my kitties on RAW from Darwin’s but one wouldn’t eat after a couple months and the other kitty eats like a bird as she is a tiny little baby. 6 pounds so it wasn’t worth buying any longer. After trying Hill’s and watching Pet Fooled, I just can’t no longer buy that crap and feed to my kitties! So my question is: Do I need to supplement with Taurine and any other vitamins or supplements? THANKS SO MUCH! 😊 🐈⬛
@JoannaTrautman Жыл бұрын
Wow… you have been around and around with cat food! You can supplement with Taurine if you would like, as excess taurine is excreted through urine, but according to all the research I could find, as long as you stick to higher taurine meats like dark meat chicken , or whole bird turkey (you may want to watch my turkey videos as I really go in depth on the micronutrients on those videos, more so than the chicken one), the diet is balanced according to nationally accepted guidelines for a healthy cat. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching, Joanna

I put the chicken in the pressure cooker and most of the bones broke down into mush. I took out any big pieces that didn't break down. I added liver and gizzards too. I put the gizzards in the pressure cooker, but i just boiled the livers in a pot since it is so soft.

Loved this video, really did. I set to and cooked up some chicken frames for our three (spoiled) cats, added rice, pumpkin and a tablespoon each of Teff and Quinoa because I didn't have Flaxseed. Took the chicken off the bones, just like you instructed, mixed all together with lots of the stock, served it up and they walked away! I was so disappointed because I could have eaten it myself it looked so good. Solution: our rather large, also finicky, dog saw the filled cat bowls and lapped it all up. If we had put the food into his own bowl, he would have walked away. Perhaps we need the services of an animal psychiatrist.
@JoannaTrautman3 жыл бұрын
Cordelia, oh my goodness... That's hilarious. I'm still chuckling! We also add this mix to our dog food (the base for the dog food has a bit less fat and more vegetables and legumes, so it makes sense that he likes it. With your kitties, do they like chicken? Our cats go ape every time I cook chicken, which is what got me looking in to it for cat food. When I roast a bird, they run laps around the kitchen as I take it out of the oven... I've even had them up in cabinets left open trying to dive into my carving station. It may be your cats have a better developed palate and are looking for a different protein source. The teff and quinoa will function in the same nutrition category (carbohydrate) as the rice, only they are more nutritious in terms of micronutrients and fiber (and protein for quinoa). The Flaxmeal (ground flax seed) provides protein, fiber, and Omega-3 fatty acids as well as lignans that assist in cellular repair and maintenance. The grains (and quinoa, a pseudo grain) aren't really good sources for the lignans and omega-3 fatty acids, though they are awesome in their own rights. I would also try mixing the old and the new food, and letting them get hungry before putting it out. Thanks so much for watching my video, giving it a shot, and letting me know how it went. I don't think you should give up yet, though. It may just need to be adjusted for your crew! All the best, Joanna

Yes, if I may reply. I read this many times that when you are giving your cats a new food or dogs for that matter; that you should give it to them somewhat slowly gradually when you're changing to a new food. like use their regular food and then add a for example maybe a quarter of what you normally give them add a quarter of the food the new food to it then do that for a couple days then then give them half of the new food in their old regular food. then 3/4 of the new food and a quarter of the old food, and so on, until you transition to all of the new food. but you could also keep it as a meal of their old regular food and half the new food for a while. Just see how it goes. I believe it's worth the effort for their health. we love our pets they're part of the family 😍🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈🌟🤗😺😽🐾🐾🐾🐾😻❣️🥰❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏✝️

..... to continue, I just read over what I wrote about transitioning the new food with the old food. it reads rather confusing .sorry about that!! Basically, just transition the food slowly, BLENDING THE REGULAR OLD FOOD WITH A NEW. HOPEFULLY, THE CATS Will Like it, eventually, 🐱🥰❤️🙏✝️❤️😽
@barbmanley31143 жыл бұрын
..... i read that it's best to do the transition of a new food with the old food over a period of a week 7 days up to maybe even a couple weeks sometimes , 7 to 14 days,.... this is mostly because of their sensitive stomachs. I read this quite a few about their sensitive stomachs and transitioning food slowly even on the cans of foods that we buy in the grocery store they suggest this.
