Sometimes I was unclear what the name of the food was you were talking about, and where it ranked, although when you were talking about Friskies, I guessed by ingredients where it resided in your list of foods, but I cannot see what food you're holding or anything like that. She has the cat foods ranked into 5 tiers. At the top/best is First Mate: Wild Pacific Salmon Formula. Instinct Original: Chicken. Rawz: Turkey and Salmon. The second tier is Tiki Cat: Succulent Chicken. Fussie Cat: Tuna Formula. Wellness: Chicken entree. Weruva: Chicken and beef dinner. Nulo Freestyle: Turkey and chicken recipe. Those are the top two categories and I've heard her say that those are what she will typically recommend to people. I hope this helps.

Carageenan is overprocessed seaweed. Cats' digestive system did not evolve to process seaweed. The little bit of vegetable they naturally get is from their prey digesting *their* diet.

Acknowledging this comment is a year old, but I’ve seen this Jackson video too and have wondered specifically about Rawz dry food or Rawbble (freeze dried) dry food. Any idea if it’s bad?
@ShayZelle96 Жыл бұрын
Raw food is actually the ideal way to feed your pets, but ONLY if you take the time and energy to do the research needed for all of their vitamins and minerals. It ends up being the healthiest diet while still cheaper than the cost of some wet food brands. In general though, any kind of kibble or dry food is unfortunate for kitties to say the least. This is because they will typically not self regulate as well as they should when it comes to hydration, especially if you only have still water bowls instead of water fountains. There is also the added carbohydrates when it comes to forms of kibble that leads to unhealthier pets in general. Hope that helped - Random internet stranger that coincidentally saw your comment a day later (Oh and freeze dried stuff, generally pretty good stuff as long as you make sure all nutritional requirements are met.)@@andreasmit6454

@@andreasmit6454 the biggest reason dry food is bad is because cats have low thirst drive and won't drink as much water as they should get. Much of their water comes from their food. Out of those 2 the freeze dried may be a good option. I've heard of people adding water back to freeze dried food so that may be a good option.

I can attest to that. Given that my indoor/outdoor cats live between 17 and 23 years each and they have all lived on Friskies and some dryfood. I'll stick with that. Great video! Thank you! Two comments... First, if you have a cat that won't eat or has stopped eating, obviously the first thing to do is take him/her to the vet and the sooner the better. Once you have that done, Wellness Pate Chicken Entree is like kitty crack for nearly every cat I have or ever had. Just that one flavor. Wellness' other flavors are fine and my cats will eat most of them, but that one they LOVE. That's been what I've used for cats I've had that stopped eating for whatever reason and it usually works. There's also an supplement from Purina called FortiFlora. If you sprinkle a little on top of your cats' food, it will often get them eating again. They love the smell. Don't mix it in, just sprinkle on top and you don't need to use much. One packet will last several feedings. Second, I would love to see a taste test video of these foods. Unfortunately, I've found that some of the best quality foods I've bought are the ones my cats are least interested in and sometimes they won't eat them at all. So, seeing someone in a video wasting money to test how palatable these foods are to a bunch of hungry cats, instead of wasting my own, would be really nice. I've bought a few premium cat foods that even the feral cats outside wouldn't touch.

Just as an add, Taurine & Crude protein are VERY IMPORTENT for cats, the higher you can get those the better for your cats! My concern was using cheap meat (US $1.29 a pound?😮) where animals are fed glyphosate riddled corn, but even premium canned food certainly isn’t gonna be better than that in any event…our food supply is so messed up our animals can’t be any better off…the recipe has you add extra taurine and vitamin E, B complex, so it looks a lot better than that heavily processed looking Wellness chicken shreds we’re giving him. Hello! I am a veterinary student learning under the mentorship of a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and would love to give my perspectives surrounding the topic of “good” vs “bad” quality pet foods. Often the ingredient list can be misleading - for instance, the term “meat by-products” refers to any assortment of organ meat that is just as nutritious, but not normally consumed by most people in the US. Because our pets don’t care if they’re eating organ meat or muscle meat, it’s actually a great use of resources and great way of reducing waste when harvesting food production animals. I understand it can seem off-putting to not know exactly what these ingredients are and where they come, but that’s when we skip the ingredient list and look at the guaranteed analysis instead. Protein, fat, and carbohydrates and the 3 macronutrients that we can actually calculate on a gram per calorie basis using percentages of those nutrients from the guaranteed analysis. These are the numbers we should be looking at - not necessarily the ingredient list as a surrogate, because ultimately it matters more that we feed our pets the right nutrients in the right quantities than being particular about the exact sources they are coming from. As for corn, soy, and wheat, it is actually way less common for dogs/cats to develop food allergies to these ingredients as compared to animal protein. Beef, dairy, chicken, pork, and fish are all MORE likely to trigger food-related hypersensitivities than can result in itchy skin or GI upset. But the bottom line is that you shouldn’t worry about trying to trim down the ingredient list to avoid these unless your pet is actively having these symptoms, in which case your vet can help you start a food elimination trial (which is no easy matter). Corn, soy, and wheat are not harmful to our pets (just like they are not harmful to humans) and provide a great source of carbohydrates and micronutrients. For example, linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid for cats (their only way of getting it is through their diet) which is found in corn oil. I really appreciate the intention behind this video as I know you want to help pet owners out there to better understand what they’re feeding to their pets. I do think there are a lot of misconceptions about what is high quality or low quality food that are highlighted in this video. I would love to start a conversation surrounding this topic if you are willing!

i’m sorry if this seems rude but with grain my vet said that grains are not good for your cat. I heard that it can cause lots of health problems and that being said. Another thing that a big issue for a lot of pet owners is not that it says chicken by product or any other meat mignt not be ethically sourced and that’s why many owners research products and brands.
@kf5034 Жыл бұрын
My concern with corn, soy and wheat is that they are all genetically modified and sprayed with Roundup, which is known to cause cancer. So until they ban those things here in Canada like they just did in Mexico, I will continue to limit how much my pets and I consume. It's not good for any of us.

Lmao can’t imagine a physician telling a patient that ingredients don’t matter in food and to just look at the protein carb fat analysis. So bizarre and clearly veterinary medicine is much behind people medicine. Also imagine telling people that processed foods composed of added vitamins and minerals are better than natural occurring nutrients from fruits and vegetables etc. Cats who live on kibble filled with corn wheat and even lentils may be convenient for us but is certainly not what is best for them.

This what a great simple breakdown and raised a lot of great points, now I can 100% tell people that ask what's in their Science Diet I can add sawdust to my corn & wheat bit. If i had to take a guess Raw = the real food st8 out of the market, to your cat Freeze dried= raw meat gone through a process that contains the meat while still process to keep protein as much as possible but able to be put on shelves with more nutrients mixed in to ensure a proper nutrient diet. Raw coated kibble seems to be same thing as freeze dried except inside each piece of meat theirs kibble (so its kibble food more so though)
@veganconservative11092 жыл бұрын
Freeze-dried raw: raw food that has had nearly all of the moisture taken out so that it lasts much longer while still retaining the nutrients. Quality depends on the ingredients used. Regular raw: food that has not been cooked. Quaity depends on the ingredients used. Raw coated: could be freeze-dried or dehydrated powder over normal kibble. Better than regular kibble, but not by much because kibble by and large is junk. Usually high, HIGH, levels of carbs and chemicals.

My kitten eats Wellness and seems to like it enough. Actually she loves Fancy Feast but that’s one of the offending “pee pee pop pop” brands 😂 I tried Instinct and she won’t touch it. I lamented to my husband how disappointed I was that she won’t eat what’s supposed to be one of the healthiest canned cat foods ever. He said since she’s still a baby, she prefers the junk food like human kids. She’s 8 months.

New cat mom here. Just came back from our first vet visit. I was recommended Purina pro plan kitten wet and dry food by the vet, so I picked up a bunch of wet and dry of that brand. Someone at PetSmart recommended Instinct wet food. Wished I had listened. I’ll use these up, then make the switch. Thank you for your extensive research, you are truly appreciated.

Yeha, additionally to everything else, cats tend to have a lower thirst drive so it really should be wet food > dry food in most cases. Especially if you have a purebred like Persians who are prone to kidney diseases due to having an ever worse drinking instinct than other breeds- I'm really surprised a vet recommended dry food to a new cat parent!

They do that because those foods are very inexpensive to manufacture (because meat byproduct is essentially garbage from the meat industry) which makes it more accessible to animal owners at lower income levels.

Due to over harvesting white fish in oceans most high quality brands will still sometimes say "ocean fish" this refers to whitefish of more then 1 type of fish harvested from a fisherman's boat to be made for cat cans or dog cans.. Over harvesting 1 fish has destroyed the breeding cycles of certain white meat fish. There are 100s of white fish in the ocean that are all so similar they are not like a Tuna,salmon and so on for labeling. So seeing white fish just means they put a few types of high quality fish in the food. Now I know it's weird and sketchy but that's how you have to label it. I wondered that for a long time. It would be more scary to see "by product ocean fish meal" gross right.

I'm so glad that you finally made this video! I just spent too much time going through and pricing out many of these brands using Chewy and Amazon to see if I can afford to improve what I am feeding my cats. I was actually surprised that Wellness, Instinct and First Mate were more affordable than some of the others in their categories. Sheba was about the same price as Fancy Feast since you get more volume per package, which also surprised me. The thing that stood out to me the most is that with Canned cat food a significant part of the cost is PACKAGING. First Mate was the only one I saw that offers 12.2 oz cans. I'm not going to go over the calculations in detail but even 5.5 oz cans have better prices per oz than 3 oz cans. I am pretty excited that with the larger cans of First Mate I will be able to switch without breaking the bank as long as the kitties approve of it.

Long story short, I did research prior to this video and what's funny is your tier list is what I agree with 95%. Thank you for this review! I think it’s so useful for a general idea of cat food and nutrition. However, I’m a bit confused how Tiki Cat and Fussie Cat, who don’t use any starches in their formulas, get “Oh, Hell Yea!” but First Mate, that uses potato which is an obvious starch, gets “Chef’s Kiss”. I also think salmon skin wouldn’t have been a bad ingredient to include so I don’t think it’s a bonus that they specify that it had been removed. I know the ranking is a little subjective, but I think they should be reversed. Also, while I haven’t fed Fussie Cat to my cats before, I can definitely say that Tiki Cat is at least 90, if not 95% meat or more. The cans are literally jammed full of the meat and some broth :) It really looks like something that I can eat!

Thank you for this! My two current cats? PICKY. One of them will ONLY eat foods I'm 100% certain are in the pee pee poo poo category and she refuses to touch any other wet food. The other cat, my calico goblin, is currently eating the Sheba I bought the previously mentioned senior kitty to entice her to eat when she could no longer manage the Weruva and Tiki Cat foods (she loved anything that looked like it came off of my dinner plate). I've tried high quality foods with my little goblin and she's only ever been interested if she saw the senior cat eating it. She's a food thief and a terrorist. Not sure what I'll feed her when we finally finish off the Sheba because she's determined to be a picky little goblin thief who steals from the super picky cat. Over time, I’ve been adding more tiki cat into the mix and soon they will hopefully just be eating that. I like to add warm water and stir it up real good each feeding, since cats need more water than they tend to consume. Another thing I started doing recently is feeding them real chicken mixed with a little pumpkin purée and water as a treat. They love it and I’ve noticed more regurgitated hair balls than usual so I think it helps. I'm curious... What exactly are your qualifications as a "pet nutritionist?" Did you have any veterinary training? Any professional Nutritional training? I ask, because as a certified veterinary nutritional consultant and prescription diet advisor, you miss a lot a key factors that owners should be looking out for. For example, the life stage that the food is labeled for. Brands like fancy feast say "for all life stages." So really that means for kittens. To feed an adult or senior cat a food that has enough calories for a kitten can lead to GI problems (because of the fat content), obesity, and diabetes, just to name a few. I'm not saying all your information is wrong, but there is some misinformation in your videos (including your dog food video). And if you really mean well, which I think you do, some proper education and qualifications should be required before teaching the public.
@yutorzh71442 жыл бұрын
Absolutely nowhere in this video is she saying this has anything to do with life stages, it's just a general ranking based on ingredient quality and whether or not they leave room for lots of questions (she gives reasons for why each food drops into each category). This is not about what nutritional needs different ages of cats need lmao
@LC-17482 жыл бұрын
@@yutorzh7144 lol I know, and that's the point. A true pet nutritionist, if their goal is to help an owner pick a quality food for their pet, the first thing they would tell a client to look for is the life stage of the food. That's just one major point that was completely left out of the video. What a true pet nutritionist does, is not say: this brand is good, this brand is bad. Instead they teach what to look out for in a food and what to avoid. Even foods within the same brand vary in ingredients, so a nutritionist teaches a client how to read the ingredients and nutritional info. It's dangerous in a public platform to say: "this is a good food," when in reality it could be the opposite of what your pet needs. That's why you'll see very few true veterinary professionals making blanket statements about pet foods. It should be based on an individual basis. This was a video made for views, not for educating owners about how to choose the right food for their pet.
@ShiitaKitsune642 жыл бұрын
@@LC-1748 Also isn't there a lot of factors with the actual fat and nutrition content of the cat food that matters? Like feeding a cat only pure chicken is going to miss a lot of important nutrients that the cat needs. I would think worrying about whether a cat food has specifically chicken vs poltury byproduct seems less important than knowing what the actual nutritional value of the food is. I understand that people want to push for ethically sourced food and all, but that's about us humans and not so much about the cats health. I'm no expert though so please correct me if I'm wrong.
@LC-17482 жыл бұрын
@@ShiitaKitsune64 Yes you are right. There are several inaccurate statements she makes about ingredients. I was just highlighting a couple as an example. You are right about fat content, and missing nutrition. That is why meat by products are actually important in pet food. By products are organ meat only (if the food is made in the US). It shouldn't be the 1st ingredient, but it is important. Animal by products never include skin, fur, feathers, bone, feet, hooves, beaks, intestines. It only includes organ meat like heart, kidneys, liver. Meat that is also suitable for human consumption. It's not exactly my cup of tea, but I know plenty of people that enjoy chicken liver and heart. So it's not reasonable to say it shouldn't be in pet food. But it's fine and right for it to be within the first 5 ingredients. Also people should be looking for taurine, fiber, and L-Lysine in their cat food and glucosamine and a whole grain ingredient in their dog food. There is just so much more information people need to have rather than rating a few popular brands. And her rating system is also flawed from a medical standpoint. Unfortunately I can't address everything in a public platform since each pet is different. But please don't hesitate to call your vet office and speak to a technician that also had nutritional training (many vet hospitals keep at least once certified nutritional consultant on staff) for a food recommendation right for your pet. Many are trained to take into account the owners preference and will work with them based on food that is available in their area and a price range realistic for the client as well as any medical concerns or sensitivities of the pet. I just really want to know how this KZbinr is qualified to call themselves a nutritionist and to take it upon themselves to publicly rate pet foods.

As someone who isn't a vet or nutritionist and has simply just done a lot of research I have to respectfully disagree with the placement of blue wilderness and sheba since blue wilderness contains carrageenan as ingredient #7 (quite high) it isn't something I would ever feed my sweet calico (Penny) sheba isn't the best but it has no carrageenan and as far as grocery store level food goes it's pretty good I'd rather feed my cat poultry liver than carrageenan for me Blue wilderness is "pee pee poo poo" sheba is "cheers!" Again take this comment with a grain of salt just my 2 cents on the matter

Another thing that drives me crazy is that chicken is in EVERYTHING! A label that says beef, salmon, etc on the front will have chicken as the primary ingredient. There were many examples of that here. Chicken is known to be a super common sensitivity among cats, yet it's nearly impossible to find foods without chicken. One of my cats has IBD, and chicken is her primary food trigger. I've spent far too many hours of my life standing in stores reading labels. Is it really so hard to have your food be made from the thing the label says it is?!
@nothing-yet2 жыл бұрын
I have this exact same problem, but with tuna! My old guy can't have it, and I have bought so many things that are labeled as chicken (or another protein he can have), only to discover when I'm reading the last few fine print ingredients that they've bolstered it with tuna or used tuna as a base. You are definitely not alone on this and it's SO frustrating!
@carr07602 жыл бұрын
@@nothing-yet I'm pretty sure mine can't have fish either. She won't eat it, so I'm not sure if she simply doesn't like it, or if she knows it bothers her tummy. Once I eliminate chicken, fish, and carrageenan there isn't much left!

Instinct makes LID Turkey or Salmon wet food - no chicken :)
@carr07602 жыл бұрын
@@jessicuhh017 I am aware of this. As I said...it is NEARLY impossible to find food without chicken. Unfortunately, when chicken is known to be a sensitivity, turkey usually is too because they are very similar proteins. Turkey is better for her than chicken, but still not good. She also doesn't eat fosh...and...she refuses to eat that brand. LoL It's also quite expensive. It would cost me $200/month just to feed my one IBD cat on that brand. I have 3 other cats. I switched to raw and can feed all 4 for less than $150.

I used to feed our cat Blue Buffalo, but after stumbling on your videos I wanted to try giving her some higher quality foods. Lately she's been getting Tiki Cat and Weruva. The most surprising change is that she now licks her bowl clean 95% of the time. In the past there was almost always quite of bit of uneaten food that we would throw out. I just assumed that she was full and didn't need more. Even though the cost is more, I'm happy to spend it especially when it's not going to waste!

ALL the brands I’ve been researching for two days, you put together in 3/4 hour! Thank you very much! I love the way you lay them out in quality. BUT here comes some critiquing 😖 (sorry). I promise, I’m not throwing stones. I’m concerned that there’s no mention of >>>>>Making sure TAURINE is early in the list of ingredients, definitely before the nutritional list (and why). 🤔 >>>>>Ingredients to AVOID: *Carrageenan (cancerous) *phosphate, dicalcium phosphate (toxic)? I really appreciate your layout and expertise. You make the long list of ingredients easier to understand. Did you notice I didn’t write, “easy” to understand?!😉 is that possible without a degree!?!?😅 Keep ‘em coming! I want more!

So glad to see this! I've been waiting! And yes, I would be very interested in an additional video or two on this subject. After one of my cats had issues with a UTI, she recommended the Hills Prescription for urinary health. Good grief, the ingredients are truly miserable! First ingredient is pork by-products, and loaded with all kinds of corn and cellulose fillers. Awful, but both cats like it. I will NOT be getting this again, I'm searching for a source for your highest ranking food!

I had the same reaction when my cat (dx’d w/FIC) was Rx’d this food. I looked at the ingredients, brought up my concerns with both the ER vet and his regular vet. Basically got a shrug. I cancelled the Hills to Home order and put him back on his regular food, after checking calcium/phosphorus/magnesium levels (all zero to negligible), and pH (6.3), all desired for UT and bladder/kidney issues.

Also would love to see you evaluate (wet and dry) foods for cats with urinary issues (straining, stones, UTI etc). I too was recommended Hills Rx diet - as others have noted it is full of garbage!

I was nervous waiting for the review of Sheba. I'm on a budget and financially struggling so that's the best I can do right now. I was actually happy when you put it in the "yucky" category because that means its not the worst. Not the best, but not the worst. I personally feel it should go in the "cheers" category when considering the overall financial recession we are currently experiencing and the fact it is decent quality for the price.

Thank you for actually fully clarifying what the issue with things like "meat by-product" and unnamed meats are. So many people just insist that these things are bad, and give you nothing when you try to ask WHY. You very clearly lay out that a lot of the issue here has to do with consistency...that if something is simply "poultry," one batch can be turkey while the other can be chicken, and that can clearly cause issues just for cats that are picky, or for cats with specific diets or food sensitivities. I do think it's a shame that most "good" foods are a 30%+ markup on price, and, as mentioned, a lot of "convenient" grocery stores don't even tend to carry "better" brands......it's really sad that there's an upcharge on feeding your pet food that is, ostensibly, safer, especially considering the dwindling middle class in the states. :// Again, though, thank you for your clarity in WHY you find certain ingredient listings to be suspect, rather than the typical circular logic that people tend to give of "it's bad because it's bad."

@@mimitehdragonDid.... did you really consider their comment as a "this person sucks" comment? They literally said that the person wasn't board certified. Why are you trusting someone who isnt apart of a board, who can easily lose their license for misinformation/disinformation, to provide you information on your pets health related to what to feed them🤦🏿♀️🤦🏿♀️ It's like going to a veneer tech to get your teeth fixed. Theres vet students and certified Vets under the comments in all of her videos questioning if she actually obtained certification and where she did because they believe that the information that she is providing isnt correct. I did quite a bit of research when I was looking into stepping up my cat's diet. Once she turned four I really wanted to better provide. (Also better income). It's reassuring that a nutritionist agrees with the choices I made. She eats almost entirely "Oh Hell Yea" with some *Chef's Kiss* and an occasional 'Cheers'. I've noticed my cat be more active and her fur is softer and fluffier and I know she's happy with the changes I made too. 😁
