My dad has been a heavy equipment mechanic for ever witch made me a heavy equipment mechanic. This stuff is so hard on a mans body. Watched my poor old man get slowly crippled up and decided to get out the profession. My pop is 71 and can’t hardly walk or stand straight. Hard to watch. Keep up the awesome video work jeff. This was the first one I saw a while back. Cheers from southern Oregon

I have operated heavy Equipment at the railway till I retired. But rare we would get to see the mechanics repairing them, so this is very new to me and I am really enjoying what you are showing us and I must say thank you and keep the videos like this coming to us people that love watching these operations.

Thanks for videoing your work Jay. This is fascinating to some of us, how these massive machines turn Horsepower into the Torque that Drives the modern world. I wonder how many cubic yards of earth man has moved since discovering these machines of Internal combustion and hydraulics? It's got to be close to the volume of the moon I'd guess...

However a D-7G that I sold some years back had final drive problems for the new owners so I guess we just dodged some bullets. Thanks for the video. Wow Jeff, you weren't kidding when you said there would be carnage on this video. You have my sympathy on that mess. The last dozer final drive I remember having apart, had safety wire on all the bolts, but that was on a D-8 I'm pretty sure. So none of those bolts were safety wired at all on your D-9 ?

***** 27 years is pretty good service when you work them as hard as you do, so you must have done a damn good job when you did the overhaul. From your experience with the Cat 9, what do you believe is the weakest point in the power train in normal operations? (I accept a loose bolt will wreck any sun and planet gear train) Mike
@Jpaydirt
@Jpaydirt 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike McInerney Mike, I've had a final split the sun gear in two and then break the planet gears, but only once, I use it in the rock quite a bit, so maybe the weak point would be the finals, but only in rock, they take quite a beating in rock

The 631 that pulled the D9 off the low loader isn't running too well. Overfueling badly. Clean out the air filters and check the injectors.
@Jpaydirt
@Jpaydirt 4 жыл бұрын
That's a 637, and it's not the air filters or injectors, it's old turbo technology and also the afr has not been cocked into the operating position yet, they smoke like that until enough boost is made to cock the hydraulic afr control into the operating position, it has a switchblade turbo on it now and smokes way less, but will still smoke until that first boost is made, everytime you shut down the engine and oil pressure is lost the afr cannot control the fuel again upon initial startup until boost sets the spool inside the afr to operating position

Jay when a planetary sprocket gear breaks on D9 final drive does it mean the whole final drive has to be replaced or can you get just the broken gear?
@Jpaydirt
@Jpaydirt 8 ай бұрын
when a planet gear breaks it will usually break the sun gear also, I've been buying complete finals and then putting in new bearings and inspecting everything else, I have in the past just replaced the broken parts, but I like buying complete finals as they have the original quality built cat parts not the cheap china stuff they make now

I cannot believe that you had 100tons of pressure on that shaft and you still had to shock it as well to get it to move! Is that filter you pointed out to clean the oil in the final drive or some other oil? I was amazed at the huge amount of collected crap in that cavity. What parts have you had to actually replace as the cost of spares must be truely horrendous - please accept my sympathy. I truely enjoy your videos.
@Jpaydirt
@Jpaydirt 9 жыл бұрын
+Dan Whiteford the filter is for the final drive oil, newer models had a magnetic filter inside, but you couldn't access it from the outside, I bought a complete final drive from Utah Track, a used parts company in Salt Lake City, it you were to buy all the parts new it would be about $60,000 the ham cover alone is $18,000 but its discontinued.

Sounds like the steering clutch is not working, check the oil in the final drive for metal also, take the round plate that is on the rear of the tractor off, the one where a winch would attach, and then have someone pull the steering clutch lever and listen to see if there is excessive oil leakage from the piston ring seals, if you have a bad seal you will hear and possibly even see oil spraying inside, do this with the tractor running, if its a bad piston ring seal you will have to pull that clutch out
