He is right about the Sphinx cat. In the mid 90s I got a girl Sphinx. 3 weeks later I went back and got a boy. They are wonderful cats.

Very interesting and informative! Thank you! As one owned by a Seal Point Siamese (meezer), I am curious. These beauties were so popular for so long (like the Best of Show Persian-- gorgeous!) and now I rarely see them. I know there is a push to distinguish the traditional Meezer and the Modern. My question is: do expert cat fanciers see a general decline in popularity? Are the traditional Meezers in danger of extinction? Thank you.

The Cat Fanciers' Association recognizes 3 SH slinky breeds - all are skinny so I think you would call it - "modern Siamese" (we call it Siamese), Colorpoint shorthair, and Oriental shorthair. SIA and ORSH are very well represented at shows. The type of cat you are referring to would be eligible for the household pet division, and most exhibitors would think that it's a domestic shorthair from the shelter with pretty markings, probably surrendered by an irresponsible cat owner who chose not to spay their cat and let it roam outdoors. I don't know if other US based registries (TICA, ACFA) recognize traditional Siamese, but if they do, the cat would require a 5 or 8 generation pedigree, and breeders are expected to conduct genetic screening and annual echocardiograms for all breeding cats.

Wait I had no idea that people did this. I have a cat that is way cooler than all of these cats. He is 18 pounds and only turned 1 on the 23rd.

Cat shows can be found all over. Some are smaller, and some are large like this show is. It is a great way to visit breeders and talk about breeds you may be interested. You can ask all the questions about care, temperament, etc. Many cat shows also have a section for local rescues to show cats that are available for adoption. Bring lots of money as there are usually a ton of vendors selling cat paraphernalia.

You can show your cat in the household pet division in any cat show (CFA, TICA, LCWW), so start bathing your cat (required), getting him used to being handled by strangers and not being upset by the smells and sounds of 150 other cats in the exhibit hall. Congratulations on having such a cool cat!

One drawback to long-haired cats: shedding season is AWFUL!!! Hair everywhere!
