one night in the 90's maybe it was '94? i walked into max fish and had me a couple drinkos i went back to where the pool tables were and here was this young woman there with a guitar an amp a mic. i listened for a while, smoked a couple smokes and eventually off i went to do whatever. i never knew how much her music would fulfill me within a few years later. i think she changed music itself by the strength of her voice. so many ads and singers seemed to employ the template she created. i hope she will sing forever and dance and laugh and cry etc. i hope she will have high hopes for her continued career because the world needs her voice. she is a complete world changer which can be a complicated thing, but i think she's changed it for the better. one night i saw her show in portland with the drummer of the dirty three who is a very good almost mesmerizing drummer. i got a chance after their set to say hello. i gave her something but i forget now, was it a necklace? it was innocent, i left cloud walking. nyc was an incredible community (and outsiders) of music back then. wow, just thinking about it. makes me smile. versus, tower recordings, ruby falls and retsin were among my other favorites, and of course sonic youth, royal trux and tons of lesser known bands whose 45's you could get at Kim's underground or pier platters. Chan's texture and delivery i rate up there with all the greats on all the instruments.

i never saw such a beautiful and talented musician like Chan Marshall. She is very unique and natural.I lost the opportunity to saw her in berlin 05.Jun.2008.hope next time.I like her music and love her because of her life background.

yep Lossforwords, i'm happy for you and so glad i had the luck too, in Barcelona, and we were like 15 people and she left the stage and sat next to me in the middle of a song - Crossbone Style) she didn't wanna sing (but the guitarrist insisted on keeping playing it) and she started crying. One of the most touching and meaningfull shows i've ever experienced.
