"Morning Has Broken" kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJS8noF_eNN8qNk is actually a Christian Hymn of Thanksgiving, with text by English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon set to the Scottish Gaelic tune "Bunessan." It first appeared in the second edition of Songs of Praise (1931). In 1971, Yes keyboardist/composer Rick Wakeman happened to be recording his album "The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth" while Cat Stevens was in an adjacent studio working on songs for what would become "Teaser and the Firecat." Wakeman sat down and began to improvise a piano accompaniment to "Morning has Broken," which was a rough sketch of what would later become "Catherine Howard" kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnmyfqKXbcSsl9E . Engineers rolled the tape, and the rest is history. Except that Wakeman would not receive due credit or royalties for his contribution until sometime after 2000.

He sang a children's hymn called "Morning Has Broken" that is rendered so sweetly it will bring a tear of joy to your eye. From Wikipedia- “ "Morning Has Broken" is a hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune, "Bunessan". It is often sung in children's services and in funeral services.”
@IllumeEltanin
@IllumeEltanin 3 жыл бұрын
Ah... Also from Wikipedia. Cat Stevens' recording, with a piano arrangement arranged and performed by Rick Wakeman, led to the song being known internationally. When shaping "Morning Has Broken" for recording, Stevens started with the hymn, which took around 45 seconds to sing in its basic form. Producer Paul Samwell-Smith told him he could never put something like that on an album, and that it had to be at least three minutes, though an acoustic demo of an early Stevens version lasts almost three minutes. Prior to the actual recording Stevens heard Wakeman play something in the recording booth. It was a rough sketch of what would later become "Catherine Howard". Stevens told Wakeman that he liked it and wanted something similar as the opening section, the closing section and, if possible, a middle section as well. Wakeman told Stevens he could not as it was his piece destined for a solo album, but Stevens persuaded him to adapt his composition. In 2000, Wakeman released an instrumental version of "Morning Has Broken" on an album of the same title. That same year he gave an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live in which he said he had agreed to perform on the Cat Stevens track for £10 and was "shattered" that he was omitted from the credits, adding that he never received the money either. On his return to performance as Yusuf Islam, Stevens made a payment to Wakeman and apologized for the original non-payment, which he said arose from confusion and a misunderstanding on the record label's part. On a documentary aired on British television, Wakeman stated that he felt Stevens's version of "Morning Has Broken" was a very beautiful piece of music that had brought people closer to religious truth. He expressed satisfaction in having contributed to this. Wakeman included a 3:42 version on his 2017 album of piano arrangements, Piano Portraits.

"Father and Son" and "Miles from Nowhere" are the standout songs on that album, but the entire Tea for the Tillerman album is among the few dozen albums that I only listen to in its entirety. Its simply amazing from beginning to end and is a folk classic.

Father and Son by Cat Stevens is amazing - no song as ever done such a good job of capturing a generational rift between the men in the same family. It's incredible, beautiful, and after growing in life - you can sometimes see yourself on both sides depending on where you're at. It's incredible.

I keep over 20 Cat Stevens songs on my phone, and that's roughly half the number that I probably Should have. He's one of the finest singer/songwriters of the 20th century. "The Hurt" "Trouble" "The Wind" "How Can I Tell You?" "Don't Be Shy" "Oh, Very Young" "Here Comes My Baby" "Katmandu" "The First Cut Is The Deepest" "Father and Son" "Morning Has Broken" "Moonshadow" "Where Do The Children Play?" "On The Road To Find Out" "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" "(I Never Wanted) To Be A Star" "Daytime" "I Want To Live In A Wigwam" and "Peace Train" are ALL songs that I am confident that you will adore.

My favorite Cat Stevens songs have already been listed in the comments, so I'll just add my support for ""Moon-Shadow" and "Morning Has Broken." There have been few singers who are able to make their music as intimate as Cat does.

Great song! Please, react to his song "Morning Has Broken." He took an old prayer and turned it into one of the most beautiful songs ever ...with the help of Rick Wakeman, the keyboardist for Yes, who also plays the incredible piano on the song. You WILL love it.

This is the sort of soul inspired music the world is missing. His poetry of lyrics are beautiful. Moonshadow is a particular favorite, and this one. Oh, Very Young One, and, Peace Train, and, If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out, and, Another Saturday Night, are all great songs. We used to sing Morning Has Broken in church, an old Anglican hymn, always at the once a month guitar service, and if we didn't have anyone on guitar, then they played Cat Stevens' singing it to lead us. The movie, Harold and Maude, used Cat Stevens for the soundtrack.

Yeah, I totally agree with you,Jamel. This gentle song is sung in such an intimate and genuine way that it tugged on the old heart strings and I just cried. Not many songs can do that, and I honestly can’t think of any new ones that are as deeply emotional. Thanks for sharing your musical discovery tour with us, I am learning about so much new music to love ❤️.
