Apologies for the wind noise in the video. I planned on doing this first thing in the morning (7am) to avoid the wind noise so I could film the whole thing with my phone. Obviously it didn't work, and at least I know for the future now. 😊

Ha ha - I was running a cable across my roof to an Flex HD using indoor cable and in my head I was thinking “Lars would be screaming at you, use outdoor cable” & then you post this!! Ha ha ha ha #sigh “assistant add replace front gate wifi cable with outdoor cat 6 at some point (soon) to my ever growing task list”

It doesn't take long at all for those indoor cables to break and fail when outdoors. You might be replacing them soon 😂

Point the flex conduit down at the top, then the cables come out and up. This creates a natural drip loop and water can't go up into the conduit.
@LarsKlintTech Жыл бұрын
Good point Zippy. I did do this as well, but wanted to mention the service loop specifically as I have seen it so many times being left out.
@arthurimona59018 ай бұрын
I do this as well. And you can always use some insulation tape to just seal the end, just to make it look neat.

Quite often I've used good quality cat 6 cables and they last plenty long outdoors in my environment. Important issue I have to use is dialectic grease on all of my fittings. The grommets and seals do not always protect the ethernet connections at the switches and boxes. The dialectic grease gives it a vapor barrier and water seal in the ethernet connections.
@LarsKlintTech5 ай бұрын
Yes, I have several indoor CAT6 cables still outside working. The issue is that you don't know when they stop working, as the symptoms can be really varied. Great advise with the dialectic grease. Appreciate it.

How long had the internal rated cable been used outside? was it producing any problems at the time of removal?
@LarsKlintTech Жыл бұрын
As I mention in the video, they've been outside for about a year at the time, and I started getting strange behaviour with the signal. Dropping in and out.

Great video, good advice to leave a drip loop in the cables. It's a tech channel but, you know, tech people tend to like cars...any chance of a video on the cars you have stored, their history, future plans for them etc? Cheers form the (frosty) UK Lars.

Thanks James. I do have some car related content planned for the not too distant future. Not sure I can take you through all the cars though for multiple reasons.

Great Video Lars as always, but maybe a mike sock to cut down on the wind noise as it was a little hard to hear you :)

Thanks Paul. I recorded this entire video with my phone, and not a separate mic. I went early morning to avoid the wind. That worked....

For running my ethernet cables from my house to my shed office we use the brown cables. I guess those are for ground? lol

Haha, cable comes in all colours. You'd have to look at the standard printed on the cable itself.

Hey Lars…Australia, the land where you can’t legally wire a plug. Are you a registered cabler? Don’t worry I won’t call the ACMA. What’s your thoughts on the cabling laws here? I think they’re ridiculous.

Never use copper network cables outdoor only use fibre optic as they are not going to burn up when lightening strike hits them….
@LarsKlintTech9 ай бұрын
You bring up a good point about the dangers of using copper cables like CAT6 outdoors, especially with the risk of lightning. While it's true that fiber optic cables don’t conduct electricity and are safer from lightning, copper cables can be used safely outdoors with proper shielding and grounding, especially when they are outdoor rated as in this video. Given this, should we consider spending thousands of dollars to replace existing CAT6 setups with fiber optics? It depends on the specific needs, such as bandwidth, distance, budget, and the environmental risks involved. Replacements might be necessary in high-risk scenarios, but in many cases, enhancing existing installations with proper safety measures could be more cost-effective.
