It's a lot of work to get out there and get the boat rigged and launched but once the sails go up, it's all worth it.

It's pretty where y'all are sailing and enjoying life. I came across this looking up the Catalina 22 for a trailerable sailboat. I'm older now and tired of the marinas and expense of a boat in the water all the time especially here in Florida. Have fun🌞

welcome to the club! I sold my catalina 25 just for that reason and it had a 4ft draft. I'm in florida also and that draft is too much. Now I have a 21ft trailerable boat with 1.5ft draft. Didn't know anything about trailering when I bought it last year. Now i can trailer it, put the mast up myself, lanuch and retrieve well enough not to be nervous anymore.

You are doing it right. Not biting off more than you can chew. We started off just like this, and now have a c27, and a c22. I think the c22 is the best lake boat because I can beach it. Loved the video.

I'm enjoying the sailing camping trips. I've got one under my belt with my C-22 and now she is in the barn so I can drop the keel just to make sure I'm not going to have any unpleasant surprises when I start taking her further from home. Oh, I've also been eyeballing that wood ladder. Looks like a fun weekend project.

Thanks, we love it out there. The ladder is a pretty simple build once you get the shape for the sides. I should have made a build video...

Nice video - I especially enjoyed watching this during the dreariness of our Northwest winter. I miss my C 22. I made the mistake of moving up to a C 25 which takes away the ability to explore lakes. Thank you for sharing.
@odysseyofjason

I'm glad you enjoyed it! We live about 6 hours away from the coast so the C22 allows us to sail waters closer to home. Having her berth in the front yard is also a big plus.

I am impressed with the ease at which you trailer and launch a 22-foot boat with a fixed keel. I didn't want the expense of monthly dock fees, so I opted for under-20 foot dinghies with daggerboards and centerboards. And I want something that I can rig fairly quickly and launch and recover solo. My idea is to go to the lake when there is a nice stiff breeze and sail all hiked out for four or five hours and then get back home before dark. But what you are doing seems quite pleasant. My problem is I don't have a pleasing companion like you do to enjoy sailing and camping with.

I am really curious the setup you use to step your mast, may be you could show us on one of your video A bungee cord wrapped around the tiller and secured on each side of the cockpit allows you to keep the tiller centered and attend to other things like lowering the sails for a few minutes
@odysseyofjason
@odysseyofjason 3 жыл бұрын
I plan to make a mast stepping video someday. I've got a pretty good system but you need 2 people to make it easy. I use a piece of para-cord to hold the tiller sometimes but I can't leave it for very long.

Lake sailing is way diffrent than what i am use to. I got my first sailboat when i was 15 years old. Ive had the 25, 27, and the 30 foot Catalina. Been on boats my whole adulthood. Me and my family now liveaboard full time on our Tayana 52 and are getting ready to head to the Caribbean for a few years. Be careful. When that sailing bug bites you..... You will be hooked for life. A side effect is always wanting a bigger boat. Enjoy the ride, always like to see new sailors. Oh yeah and knots and miles per hour is different.
@odysseyofjason
@odysseyofjason 2 жыл бұрын
That sounds amazing 🤙 I'm afraid your warning about the bug came too late. When this channel takes off I'm outta here LOL. Let me know if you need crew. PS... I put that kt/mph thing in there as a shameless attempt to get comments 😉

@@gordonipock9385 my Tayana 52 will do 7.5 knots in 10 knots of wind. She is fast boat for her size. We actually have quite a few plaques on board from many races this boat has won.
@gordonipock9385
@gordonipock9385 Жыл бұрын
Longer boats tend to be faster, but that is impressive speed in just a ten knot wind. I sail planing dinghies on Lake James. If I lived on the lake I'd like to have a high performance keel boat, something like a Soling or smaller J boat, something with a weighted keel I could solo. But not living on the lake I must keep it smaller and simpler.
@gordonipock9385
@gordonipock9385 Жыл бұрын
I don't think I would want to live on a boat all the time; however, I wish I was on the coast. The wind is so much better coming off the ocean, stronger and steadier, than it is on mountain lakes. The fickleness of the wind here can be maddening.

What a nice video thanks. I have a catalina 25 with 4' draft can only dream about getting that close to shore. On the flip side i feel safer sleeping off shore a bit. Also, can you steer well with the tiller just bare bones like that? Does it feel like regular steering under sail? I think it was working for you because you were heading down wind. could it work on other points of sail?Just never thought about it before.
@odysseyofjason
@odysseyofjason 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Mine drafts about 2.5 feet with the wing keel but the banks are steep up here in the hills. I hand steer on all points of sail. The tiller can get heavy if the main is overpowered but if the boat is balanced, it's no problem. At 13:30 the wind is on the beam, I have a reef in the main and she's balanced pretty good.

We're new at this and not comfortable in winds that strong. This was at the end of a long day of loading, towing, rigging, and launching. It's also the beggining of a long weekend. Things can escalate quickly on this boat and we were just happy to be out there. 3.5 was good enough and we were having fun.
